CAMPTON, N.H.-The U.S. Forest Service shut down several White Mountain National Forest trailheads and recreational sites until further notice Friday in an effort to slow the spread of the novel coronavirus disease, COVID-19. Forest officials said there recently has been “unseasonably high” numbers of visitors, which could result in the increased chance for exposure to COVID-19. The trailheads, day-use areas and recreational facilities were closed to ensure visitors and staff members can properly follow guidelines from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention for social distancing.

What wasn't mentioned was the impact on the search and rescue folks. It seems like inexperienced hikers were getting themselves in trouble lately. Forgive me if I'm wrong, but a rescue in the mountains can involve 20 volunteers - all in close proximity to each other and the rescued. Give it a month. Black fly season will be half way done and the AMC will start reopening at the beginning of June. Hopefully.

I hear the Nepali government is thinking of shutting down Everest for similar reasons this year!

Right ... because those most at risk from this virus, the elderly and the obese, would flock to the trails (and parks, beaches, jogging paths, etc.).

This is garbage. Let people 'social distance' as they need to.

I have never once, in all my life of hiking, ever come back from a hike and thought I caught something from another hiker. I have never once heard of any other hiker come back from a hike and suspected they caught something from another hiker. I have never heard of any rescue team catch anything from any hiker —ever—. I’m not saying it can’t happen, but we’re going to shut something down because something that has never happened might happen? Wonder what else we’ll justify.

Sunlight kills China virus, fresh air dilutes it. It is sheer dogmatic idiocy to close forests, mountains, and beaches where most hikers are literally miles apart and reasonable people can easily stay 10 feet from each other at all times, unlike on city sidewalks. If you are worried about rescuers, just post signs saying enter at your own risk.

If we closed everything down based on false information from overzealous models, meaning there basically should never have been a shutdown ... then why act as though we have to reopen based on those same models? Open the dang country!

Weird. When I go hiking i see maybe one hiker a day, if that, and he's way over yonder and walking faster than I am.
Of course, he could be farting, what with hiker food, and possibly Australian.

Ditto #4. Those geezers are too slow and it's hard to get around the fat people.
Virus ??? You stand a better chance of dying from a mountain lion attack. Or falling off a cliff trying to get around a fat person.

So we don't need the Forestry Service any longer. Please send them notices of termination.

The forest officials, like many other senior government officials, work within the current administration but they serve the democrats.

New Hampshire has had 57 deaths from Kungflu. This is government employees looking to sit on their fat butts and collect a paycheck for doing nothing. The National Park Service has all the boat ramps along the Chattahoochee River here in Atlanta shut down while right across from their ramps and parks the county parks are open. Federal employees are despicable and Trump needs to fire a bunch of their lazy butts.

And I thought that N.H was the state of “Live free or Die”. As a former resident, I’m a bit ashamed. Although I can’t deny that flatlanders are generally obnoxious.

It's fact in NH. Trees, bushes, leaves, feral animals, dirt, are all highly infected with the coronavirus and should you venture in, you're looking at death and we state officials only want to protect you.

Dumbassery is alive and well in many areas. Have the hikers sign wavers that if they get lost they either fall back on their boyscouting skills or stay lost.
