Parents who send their children to private schools or who teach them at home could receive $4,100 “scholarships” under legislation that took center stage Tuesday in the session’s biggest battle over education reform. The freedom savings account legislation (HB 20) would be named in honor of the late House Speaker Dick Hinch, R-Merrimack, its original sponsor, who died last December after contracting COVID-19.(Snip) Rep. Glenn Cordelli, R-Tuftonboro, said that under the bill, “a parent can take their dollars with them if the child is not getting a good enough education.”

It really is all in our heads after all. Promising new gene research by a leading expert in Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder has revealed changes in the brains of those afflicted with the illness. The ongoing study gives hope for better understanding of, and treatment for, a disorder that affects an estimated 8 million Americans a year, according to Dr. Matthew Friedman, who is a professor and vice chair for research in the Department of Psychiatry at the Geisel School of Medicine at Dartmouth.

The Office of the Comptroller of the Currency said Thursday that it has paused publication of a final rule that would require banks to do business with companies such as oil drillers and gun manufacturers that they might otherwise choose to avoid because of perceived reputational risk. The question isn’t whether the groundhog will cast a shadow and bring on six more weeks of winter. What I want to know is: Were kids way back in the day really walking 5 miles uphill through knee-deep snow to get to school, where they huddled by a small wood stove to thaw frozen fingers and toes? Pull up a chair and share some time-worn tales in “A Sense of Place: Winter Now and Then,” a virtual romp through the snowdrifts at 8 p.m. on Groundhog Day, Tuesday, Feb. 2, via Zoom.

U.S. Rep. Adriano Espaillat said Thursday he had tested positive for COVID-19, becoming the fourth member of Congress to announce they had contracted the coronavirus following a mob attack on the U.S. Capitol last week. "I am following guidance from my physician and quarantining at home after having tested positive for COVID-19," he wrote on Twitter. Espaillat is the latest lawmaker to test positive for the coronavirus in what has become a partisan issue, with Democrats blaming Republicans for not wearing masks while sheltering in secure areas on Jan. 6, as violent supporters of Republican President Donald Trump stormed the building.

CONCORD -- A chief architect of Donald Trump’s 2016 campaign predicted Monday that despite the misgivings of some of its members, Congress will uphold the Electoral College 2020 victory for President Elect Joe Biden later this week. “I don’t think you are going to see an overturning of the Electoral College. I don’t think that is going to happen,” said Corey Lewandowski of Windham. (SNIP) Trump will go on to play a major role as kingmaker for friendly Republicans in key midterm elections in 2022, he predicted. “You are going to see a lot of Donald Trump in the 2022 cycle,”

CONCORD — For the second year in a row, New Hampshire has been ranked the most economically free state in North America in an annual survey by a free-market enterprise think tank. Three times in the past four years, New Hampshire has topped all U.S. states, Canadian provinces and states in Mexico in the report by the fiscally conservative Fraser Institute. (Snip) “New Hampshire has led the nation in streamlining government regulation to allow job-creators the opportunity to grow and expand,” Sununu said in a statement.

A Pennsylvania judge has ruled in favor of the Trump campaign by concluding segregated ballots should not be counted. Further, the judge found that Pennsylvania Secretary of State Kathy Boockvar lacked the "statutory authority" to change election law just days before Election Day.
"[The] Court concludes that Repsondent Kathy Boockvar, in her official capacity as Secretary of the Commonwealth, lacked statutory authority to issue the November 1, 2020, guidance to Respondents County Board of Elections insofar as that guidance purported to change the deadline in Section 1308(h) of the Pennsylvania Election Code...for certain electors to verify proof of identification,

Tomorrow, voters will choose a president, bestowing upon either Joe Biden or Donald Trump the power to wage war, set the country’s agenda and tweet out whatever he desires. (Snip) Down very close to the bottom of the ballot is the race for Hillsborough County register of probate. The job description is much simpler than that of president. Do nothing. The register of probate has no office. No secretary to handle the lack of any calls coming in. No county mailbox, email address or link on the county website.

After his “Trump Country” billboard was abruptly removed from a prominent location in downtown Nashua, Dave Streit has since contracted with another agency that now has his ad featured on five billboards throughout southern New Hampshire. “I was able to get a great deal on several electronic billboards that were up and running within four hours,” Streit said on Friday, four days after Outfront Media prematurely removed his large Trump Country sign from the top of 169 Main St. in downtown Nashua.

I RECENTLY READ a post by a friend written after the first presidential debate. While she opposed aspects of the Biden/Harris platform, she felt alienated by the arrogance and unkindness she felt was displayed by Donald Trump and she couldn’t vote for a candidate who didn’t represent her. (Snip) Despite the dire predictions before taking office, our president’s administration has taken action to protect our country and the liberties we enjoy. That includes not only the appointment of three U.S. Supreme Court justices, but 53 federal appellate judges and 146 district court judges, all committed to adhering to our Constitution and laws as written
