How many conservatives have experienced something like this: A friend who knows you are a conservative, a Trump supporter and/or that you are not a global warming hysteric, sends you an email, out of the blue, profanely attacking the President or Rush Limbaugh and you as a conservative or as a climate change denier. This person does this wholly without provocation. You have long avoided ever discussing politics with this person. Maybe you've sent that person a friendly "how are you" and you get back a tirade peppered with ad hominem attacks.

Agreed, OP.
I only have one old friend who I hear is a NeverTrumper. He was an old shooting buddy for over 30 years, used to see him every Friday night and many once-a-month Saturday matches, plus some social events. I haven't heard from him since the election, but other friends have told me he has a new leftist girlfriend and has "gone around the bend" about Trump, apparently under her guidance. Two old friends have warned me to stay away from him, that he attacked them, and asked "How could anyone support someone who is just like Hitler?" This guy used to be pretty sane, was an Air Force pilot in Vietnam, always seemed a sensible guy.
FTA:"Perhaps they fear discovering that they may have been wrong all along -- about conservatism and about Trump. So they lash out. They insult and deride anyone they know and who just may have been right all along; about the attempted coup, about Trump's successes, about impeachment, about Bernie and Biden and Warren.
Yeah, this might be a lot of it. Horribly frightened that their entire world view is being shown to be inarguably wrong, and it scares the hell out of them, so then hang on, angry at anyone who might further shatter their viewpoint. Fingers in their ears, loudly droning on "Naaaah.....Naaah...Naaah", when not screaming about Trump.
Steve Hayes was on Brett's show the other night....he's still a nutball NeverTrumper, can't say anything even slightly positive about what Trump does.

I have neighbors down the road that I’ve always been very fond of. They’re an older couple, he’s a farm she’s a farmers wife. We’re talkin salt of the earth types. Out of the blue they started sending me anti Trump memes on messenger. I ignored the memes and always replied very nicely asking how they were. One day I just got tired of them and started sending pro Trump memes back. I must’ve won the meme war cause I haven’t received any lately from them. They poked the Bear so I still send the occasional meme to them.

I can relate. I used to have two friends who went gaga over Barack Obama and any word of criticism was met with extreme anger and the usual defensive rhetoric. I saw it for what it was, disappointment and embarrassment for supporting a loser. They were then easy prey for TDS. They were smart people otherwise but we have long since parted ways.

Leftism is a relatively nascent secular religion that brooks no dissent. Because the goal of leftists is ultimate power over civilization, the movement requires a militant, adversarial relationship towards others of even more moderate inclinations. Conservatives are heretics, sinners, apostates and an existential threat to their faith. Leftists are at war. In war, the rules of civility have broken down. Historically, when they win they immediately marginalize, threaten, punish, banish and often execute the opposition. When the conservative population is gone, they turn on each other, because the pursuit of power is endless and the desire to wage war endlessly is a sickness of the mind and soul. Those infected by the lure of the Left become fevered and intolerant. They become zealots. They no long see relationships in the same way as before. On a personal level, it is sad. On a societal level it is horrifying.

People make and maintain relationships for many different reasons. They also have tightly held beliefs that are woven into their self image. Relationships that support their self image are held closely. Relationships that challenge their self image are discarded. Dems are being told by their leaders that Trump is a threat and that he is attacking their deeply held values. A lot of it is lies but dems are good followers. The nature of the attacks are structured to create a PERSONAL animosity toward Trump, not just policy differences. Trump isn't just wrong, he is evil. How can you accept an evil person?

Sadly I have a friend of over 43 years whom I avoid. She gushed over Obama, and I never said a thing. She gushed over Paulette Jordan (Google that moron), and I never said a thing. But I can guarantee you that if I ever mentioned DJT, she would shun me. I would never expect her to have the same political belief as mine, but I don't care to talk about it with her either.

I had to travel a lot during the ‘16 election, all over the western states. Wherever I went I could start up a conversation with a fellow conservative and we would both be up to date on whatever was going on with the campaigns. In contrast, there’s my family. All well educated, well-read, successful in life - and extremely liberal. Also, I found out to my surprise - amazingIy uninformed. They only knew what the evening news told them. Consequently, they knew nothing about the “tarmac” talk, Hillary’s bad health (remember the toss into the car?) or even what Trump planned to do once in office, among many other things. The intervening 3 years have not changed my observation: conservatives are far better informed than liberals are.

I used to have an annual teaching gig with a shop in Modesto, CA. (I design and teach hand embroidery) The shop owner knew that I was a conservative just as I knew that she was a lib and we go along fine until 2 months after the 2016 election. Then one day an email from her appeared in my inbox saying that she was cancelling my classes. I replied and asked for an explanation but she never responded. The only reason I have been able to come up with is TDS.

Until the country becomes 'normal' again we want PDT in charge. However long it takes!

"Liberalism is a mental disorder." Truer words were never spoken. However, instead of TDS, I prefer Trump Unacceptance Resistance Disorder or T.U.R.D. And there were certainly plenty of T.U.R.D.s on display during the State of the Union speech, weren't there??
