For years, Mitt Romney had a reputation as a flip-flopper, an opportunist, a politician who would tailor his beliefs to fit whichever group he was trying to please.
Running for office in deep-blue Massachusetts in 1994 and 2002, he pronounced himself strongly pro-choice. Running for the Republican presidential nomination in pro-life Iowa and South Carolina, he became just as strongly pro-life.
As governor of Massachusetts, he produced a universal healthcare program that prefigured Obamacare. Appealing to GOP voters deeply opposed to Obama, Romney renounced his signature accomplishment.

He's made himself the "go to" person for an anti-Trump sound bite when the media needs one, completing his transformation into McCain 2.0.

Interesting article. Thanks for posting. I have to wonder if even Romney himself understands his real motives for the vote.

I had forgotten all Rummey's vacillating stands. It seems his "conscience" is subject to the winds of politics. Since we have established that Rummey's high moral character may be only knee highs, maybe it is just as simple as a bit of revenge. Rummey figured he could backhand Trump yet play up the conscience routine, figuring he could get away with it. Unfortunately for him, Trump is not a forgive and forget kind of guy, especially in this case. Not only is Rummey a traitor, he is fakely pious; still opportunistic after all these years. Too bad his ego pushed him into this but he deserves what he is getting.

In only one sense Pierre Delecto is like a tiger: He hasn't changed his stripes. (In other senses he is quite different from a tiger. For example, he is not fierce. A newly born domestic cat has more ferocity.) And he's a lot like the animal that got Eve to eat the apple and pass it on to Adam: He's a snake in the grass.

Romney is a slimeball psychopathic monster who dresses nicely. He has literally zero morals when it comes to clawing for power. That he can swap sides on issues so conveniently, and swear that he REALLY means it, when it will help his political power, proves that he is absolutely dishonest to the core.
This "I suffered and reflected, and asked God" is pure garbage. I don't believe it for one second. He is a charlatan of the first order, just as crooked a fraudster as BillyJeff when it comes to politics.
Romney is a thoroughly despicable and untrustworthy person. Never forget that he is by nature a scorpion, and that he will never change his nature, only sometimes camouflage it for a while with this pious BS.

If Pierre was, as he says, directed by god to do this, why all the hand-wringing? Why all the drama? If I were convinced direction came to me from god, I would go do it (and shut up about it). If, however, I weren't really sure where the direction was coming from - and what my motives were - I might spend a lot of time rationalizing, justifying and explaining - and publicizing the challenge my position is for me, me, me.

As this excellent article makes clear, this latest betrayal was as carefully orchestrated as all of Romney's other "acts of conscience." Nonetheless, I have realized something new as a result of this episode: Romney's political behavior is so execrable I have often found myself hoping for the second worst alternative in analyzing him.
For example, when Romney declared his intention to run for the Senate in 2018, I assumed his previously record as a completely unprincipled political opportunist would govern his conduct as a Senator. Knowing Romney to be devoid of principles, I naively assumed he would suck up to President Trump to serve his own narrow political self-interest. It was only months later that I realized Mitt finally had a real political mission: He meant to destroy President Trump and reverse Trump's take over his father's Republican Party.
If that was the goal, Romney has lost, and all is well. So now I find myself hoping that this was just about Romney's petty personal vengeance because then it's over. However, a voice inside my head is telling me to read MDConservative's posts even more carefully and heed his warnings. What if Romney did this to claim political prisoner of conscience status so he can resign from the GOP and run as a political independent to split the 2020 vote and deny President Trump re-election? What if Romney is prepared to destroy himself and his own political party to prevent Trump's re-election? What if he is now the equivalent of a political suicide bomber? What if, in other words, Romney actually is crazy? That would explain all the pre-emptive moral posturing as preparation for his next political move.
Whatever happens next, nothing is ever as it seems where Mitt Romney is concerned.

Here are some more Romney flip flops - begs for Trump's endorsement during the 2012 election; denounces Trump as a fraud, a fake and a liar during the 2016 primaries; begs for the Secretary of State job after Trump is elected in 2016; begs for Trump's endorsement in his 2018 Senate race; denounces Trump in January 2019. At least now he's being consistent as the anti-Trump.

Hmmm that’s interesting. I didn’t know that Romney set up FOUR interviews before he made his announcement to the Senate. That sounds ... calculating.

This is a case of "Fool me once, shame on you. Fool me twice, shame on me. Fool me three thrice, shame on all of us." Like everything else, there's a victim with every scam. He promised and took an oath to represent his constituents by accepting their support and money. He should be prosecuted for breaking that oath.
