I was able to watch the first hour and a half of today’s impeachment hearing until a prior, far more enjoyable commitment took precedence. I saw the opening statements of Adam Schiff and Devin Nunes, plus the opening statements of today’s two witnesses, George Kent and Bill Taylor.
Here are my impressions:
Schiff devoted his opening statement to a summary of what he says the evidence will show. He presented his statement in measured-sounding tones, a welcome departure from his previous attempt to put words in President Trump’s mouth.
Most of the facts Schiff presented are supported by documents and/or testimony.

A stash of cocaine worth $22,000 hidden in an Italian forest by a gang of suspected drug dealers was reportedly destroyed by wild boars.
Police dismantled the smuggling operation in Tuscany after placing a wiretap on members of the gang, which consisted of three Albanians and an Italian, The Local reported. While listening on a call, officials overheard a person complaining about the damage caused by the hogs. Four suspects were arrested on drug charges after the bust, which left two members in jail and two under house arrest, Italian newspaper Il Tirreno reported.
The gang came to the attention of police during an investigation into the killing of a 21-year-old

After a Wednesday morning and lunch break on ABC that boasted Democrats were “serious” and U.S. Ambassador Bill Taylor was like Walter Cronkite, the post-hearing coverage led a few panelists to painstakingly concede that the hearings of Taylor and Assistant Secretary of State George Kent would not change anyone’s minds about impeachment. On the other hand, there was a hilarious back-and-forth with former Clinton official/chief anchor George Stephanopoulos and senior national correspondent Terry Moran to bemoan how more haven’t crossed over to call for Trump’s removal because they’re too blinded by Trump’s “version of American populism.”

For Democrats, the impeachment hearings that began Wednesday are a chance to make their case against President Trump publicly. For Republicans, they're just a continuation of a "witch hunt" that began with Trump's election. For bars and restaurants in the nation's capital, the hearings are something altogether different: An extended merchandising opportunity for impeachment cocktails with names like "Insane in the Ukraine" and "Barr-a-Lago" that play on a country at the heart of the inquiry, Trump's attorney general, William Barr, and his Florida estate, Mar-a-Lago.Some of the establishments have begun opening as early as 9:30 a.m., catering to patrons in a town where national politics are a favored pastime

I was chatting with Terry, my writing partner, this morning. He was in the Intelligence Community for years, as was I; Terry on the analysis side, me in collection and later as a computer security researcher. (Snip) Now, Terry is a Democrat, pretty liberal, not at all impressed with Trump. But we were talking about Eric Ciaramella who was fired from the White House staff because he was leaking confidential information to the media. According to all the sources, he then returned to the CIA where he currently works.
Which is, frankly, odd.
How, exactly, do you lose a job for security violations and return to the CIA?

Chinese police have appeared patrolling the streets in several European cities. They have appeared in cities like Paris, Rome, and Milan to protect and provide assistance to Chinese tourists.
However, while China claims that the presence of the officers is to provide assistance to Chinese tourists traveling abroad, many of the countries in which the officers are stationed are also closely tied to China’s Belt and Road Initiative. Two Chinese officers were sent to Belgrade, Serbia in September to offer a link between local Serbian police and the growing number of Chinese tourists.

A California board voted to enact tougher energy efficiency standards for lightbulbs, pushing back against a rollback from the Trump administration.
A new rule from the Department of Energy (DOE) eliminates energy efficiency standards for half the bulbs on the market, a move critics say will make the U.S. a dumping ground for energy-sucking, cost-ineffective bulbs.
The vote from the California Energy Commission essentially bars sales of incandescent and halogen bulbs by adopting stronger energy efficiency standards. The state banned the sale of such pear-shaped bulbs in 2018, but the rule will now extend to all other shapes of bulbs —

The impeachment inquiry into President Donald Trump backfired on congressional Democrats Wednesday, when a star witness inadvertently made the case that Hunter Biden’s wheeling and dealing in Ukraine should be investigated.
Testifying before the House Intelligence Committee on the opening day of the inquiry, Deputy Assistant Secretary of State George Kent admitted that U.S. officials had been urging the Ukrainian government for some time to explain why an investigation into Burisma Holdings, the eastern European oil and gas company that employed Hunter Biden on its board of directors, was shut down.

Nov. 12 -- The Supreme Court of Florida on Tuesday rejected an appeal for a stay of execution for a death row inmate convicted of killing a 14-year-old girl in 1985.
James Dailey was sentenced to death in 1987 for killing Shelly Boggio, whose body was found over 30 years ago stabbed, strangled, drowned and naked floating in waters off Indian Rocks Beach in Pinellas County. In a 21-page ruling, the justices rejected the appeal for post-conviction relief. Dailey filed the appeal claiming innocence among other objections in September following Gov. In the appeal, Dailey, 73, claimed that new evidence proved Boggio was killed

It’s a sobering reality for an already struggling campaign. Last week, the Democratic former San Antonio mayor’s team slashed staff in two early states. Last month, he threatened to end his White House bid if he didn’t raise $800,000 in the final 10 days of October — a goal he narrowly hit.
His campaign insists he’s not exiting the race now, but staying afloat with months to go before February’s Iowa caucus will be a tall task.

Gov. The company says it can’t take on new commitments because Cuomo (followed by Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy) blocked construction of a new pipeline. That new-hookups moratorium, the gov insists, “is either a falsified device or a lack of competence.” That is, National Grid either doesn’t need the pipeline — or is still at fault because it didn’t find some other way to assure supply. The impeachment hearings against the President of America begin today. You’d think it might make the front page of, say, the New York Times. Its lead story, though, is about how the Supreme Court appears set to vindicate President Trump in his campaign to force Congress to act on the dreamers. The off-lead is about Turkey. The lead editorial is about — wait for it — electrical cigarettes.
We’re not here to lecture the editors of the Times about how to edit their newspaper. Their Page A1 today, though, suggests that in respect of impeachment, the eyes of even the Gray Lady are starting to glaze over.

Never Trump Republicanism isn't quite dead, but it sure is getting close.
Ever since President Trump burst onto the political scene and quickly shot to the top of the polls months from the start of the 2016 primary season, mainstream Republican politicians and pundits have been forced to respond. First there was dismissal and condescension. Then, once the voting began, there was concern mixed with certainty that Trump's support would soon collapse. This was followed by panic when it didn't.
By the summer of 2016, the institutional GOP was deeply divided between those who favored rallying around the unorthodox nominee and others who favored sabotage —

There’s no doubt Kanye West has found religion. Listen to the musically arresting “Jesus is King,” and you’ll hear a powerful, positive case for a personal relationship with G-d. But will secular Americans heed his call?
Considering that we’re living in historically peaceful and prosperous times, it’s notable how misery stalks many Americans like a shadow. Countless government programs have tried to fix what ails us, at least since the Great Society got going, and it never quite works.
That’s why I’m hoping Kanye’s music will inspire more Americans to join his religious journey.

The Department of Justice inspector general’s much anticipated report on alleged FISA abuse ahead of the 2016 election is expected to be released before Thanksgiving and will contain several criminal referrals, including one for former FBI Director James Comey, according to sources who spoke with investigative journalist Sara Carter.
DOJ IG Michael Horowitz’s report will lead to the declassification of documents long requested by senior Republican lawmakers, Carter reported. Included among these documents will be certain email chain between the anti-Trump FBI investigators in the Russia probe and Comey.

A headline I read this weekend proclaimed that Virginia Governor Ralph Northam, the Klan-hood-wearing gent formerly known at VMI as “Coonman,” was “working on” possible gun confiscation in Virginia now that money on the Left has successfully buried his racism and bought the legislature for their party. Aside from the obvious commentary about what happens when Democrats obtain power, the headline suggests a far deeper problem confronting our country. It is only a matter of time before anti-constitutional forces seize control of the Senate, or perhaps the White House, and when they do, what historically American citizens consider to be unalienable rights will suddenly

It is time for journalists to do their job and tell the public, especially the young, the devastation that electing Democrats and imposing their policies on the American people would cause. Everything the Democrats are proposing relating to the economy involves imposing major tax increases and substantial increases in regulations. Every policy involves transferring massive amounts of money, power and freedom from businesses and the people and handing it over to the very wealthy politicians and bureaucrats in DC who produce nothing.
If they get elected and get three of their proposals enacted the economic collapse would be greater than anything we have ever seen.

The title of a feature article Tuesday in The Daily Beast by the author of a new book is bad enough: “9 Reasons to Thank the USSR: How We Got the Cold War Wrong.” As anti-Communist historian and author Diana West tweeted about it, “Can't recall reading anything more appalling on more levels.” The Beast is appalling enough on a daily basis, alright, but this article and the book it summarizes should scare the living daylights out of every patriot out there.
The 800-word article, and the 512-page book it is drawn from, Someone Is Out to Get Us: A Not So Brief History of Cold

Many in the West today are grappling as to how Islam has been able to get a foothold in our society. We know of Islamists’ present-day means to get government officials to capitulate to their whims through lobbying and the mainstream media, presenting themselves as victims of the same Western society that has helped them. But how have they been able to acquire such political leverage? Apparently, there has been a willful lack of circumspection or foresightedness. Back in the 1970s, the late archbishop Marcel Lefebvre had said:
“As long as Muslims are an insignificant minority in a Christian country, they

Twenty years ago, I wrote my first book about why women can’t “have it all,” or at least all at once, despite what the culture tells them. (Hint: It’s because no one, male or female, can perform two full-time jobs simultaneously without the bottom falling out.)At the time, the so-called Mommy Wars were raging. Women everywhere who’d been sold a bill of goods by their feminist mothers and mentors were either lamenting the futility of being able to successfully work full-time outside the home while maintaining a healthy marriage and family life, or they were defending their choice to work full-time by insisting children do fine in round-the-clock substitute care.

Women who live in America’s suburbs are supporting President Donald Trump’s re-election bid, says a new report at OpenSecrets.org, that shows Trump is benefiting from a surge in large-dollar donations from women in suburbs – more than any Democrat candidate.
While mainstream media are reporting some polls that suggest Trump is losing the support of women, the report by Open Secrets, part of the Center for Responsive Politics, shows the president has over 10,500 large-dollar contributions from women in suburbs, and has received $8,293,135 from them – the largest amount than any of the Democrat 2020 candidates.

Every four years, Michael Bloomberg hears something virtually no other American hears: a groundswell of support for a Bloomberg presidential candidacy. Now, as the 2020 Democratic primaries rapidly approach, he’s hearing it again.
Bloomberg, a fairly successful mayor of New York City and a fabulously successful businessman, has an estimated net worth of $52 billion. Without that fortune, nobody would be talking about a Bloomberg candidacy at this late date. But with his money, Bloomberg could self-finance a run from start to finish without ever having to ask a single donor for a penny. That gives him freedom to float a would-be candidacy long after the field has been set.

Lt. Col. Alexander Vindman is living, breathing, testifying proof the Deep State exists. He has shown his true colors and the agenda of the self-appointed elites who think they run this country.
Let me state categorically that I am not implying dual loyalty or questioning Vindman’s patriotism or even his devotion to duty as he sees it. I’m questioning his judgment about where that duty lies and the execution of those duties as a military officer and civil servant.
The term “deep state” is now highly charged politically. The right takes it as a given, the left sometimes denies its existence. Here’s my definition for the purposes of this discussion.

Trump backers say the president has strong opposition from his National Security Council because he chose foreign policy experts instead of his loyalists as top advisers in the beginning and the staff was full of Obama supporters.
Most Obama-era NSC “detailees” — the term for temporary agency transfers — remained as the new White House was rocked by destabilizing anti-Trump leaks to the liberal media.
“Obama clearly left the White House booby-trapped,” Michael Caputo, a campaign adviser, told The Washington Times.
The NSC workforce’s size and loyalties have come into sharp focus now that a former staffer has filed a nine-page whistleblower complaint against President Trump.

This won’t surprise anyone who has been paying attention, but there is a stark difference between the parties: Republicans love America, while Democrats can’t stand her. Rasmussen Reports has the numbers:
Democrats really don’t like America and think it’s time to move on from the culture that got us here.
A new Rasmussen Reports national telephone and online survey finds that just 38% of Likely Democratic Voters believe American society is generally fair and decent. Fifty-one percent (51%) say it’s unfair and discriminatory.
By comparison, 74% of Republicans and unaffiliated voters by a 49% to 36%

On Wednesday, the curtain rises on the House’s impeachment show, featuring State Department career diplomats William Taylor Jr. and George Kent as the first witnesses. Mainstream media claim Taylor and Kent have “damning evidence” that President Trump delayed military aid to the Kiev government in a quid pro quo to pressure the Ukrainian president to dig up dirt on the Bidens.Don’t believe it. Kent and Taylor have no evidence against Trump — only a false rumor spread during a farcical game of telephone on Sept. 7. Taylor heard the claim third-hand, and then called Kent, who got it fourth hand.Making these diplomats lead witnesses

The NFL has put together a private workout for Colin Kaepernick.
According to Adam Schefter, the former 49ers quarterback will go through a training session in Atlanta on Saturday for teams, and interviews can be conducted afterwards.Video of the session will be given to all 32 teams, which are all also invited to attend in person to watch the man who refused to stand for the anthem throw footballs.(Snip)This is comical. This is just straight up comical. Does anybody honestly believe Kaepernick will ever play in the NFL again?

It is slowly becoming clearer whom exactly the Democrats are zeroing in on as their key voting bloc for 2020. It is not the youth vote, contrary to the received opinion. The youth vote is always in danger of oversleeping, and by 4:00 PM most are in danger of being lured to Happy Hour. It would be just like the Trump team to lure the kids, especially the college kids, to the bars rather than allow them to do their civic duty and vote Democratic or in some cases vote communist. The Democrats are not going to waste their time on such unreliable voters.
Nor is the union vote likely

I, for one, have grown weary of Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-SC), appearing on every other talk show bloviating about spygate, Ukrainegate, collusiongate, and all the wrongs committed against the Trump presidency and then doing nothing to fight back other than getting his face in front of the camera. Lindsey, do your job or get off the pot -- call some hearings, as you promised, and go for the Democrat’s jugular.

The dictionary defines a conjurer as someone who “practices magic arts” and “performs feats of sleight of hand and illusion.”
Someone like Adam Schiff.
The California Democrat takes his magic act public Wednesday as the impeachment hearings burst out of a Capitol Hill dungeon and onto television. Donald Trump’s presidency and the 2020 election likely hang on whether Schiff’s sleight of hand can survive the bright lights of public exposure and cross-examination.

Former White House Press Secretary Sean Spicer reacted Tuesday to being voted off ABC's "Dancing with the Stars," saying it was a once-in-a-lifetime experience and thanking his fans for their support.
Spicer told "Tucker Carlson Tonight" that earning a spot in the quarterfinals before leaving the show was farther than he originally thought he would go in the competition.
"I went into this thinking one, two weeks maybe -- I'm not really good at this. But, I'll have fun, I'll learn something," he said.
"I really really enjoyed this -- It exceeded my expectations."

Sen. Lindsey Graham, R-S.C., said the Trump impeachment inquiry, as constructed, is a threat to the presidency and should not be legitimized.
Graham told "Hannity" on Tuesday the allegation President Trump engaged in a quid pro quo with Ukrainian officials is also not true.
"I think it would be a danger to the presidency in the future for us to legitimize what's going on in the House," he said.
"There's no civil proceeding in America -- no criminal proceeding in America -- that denies a person to tell their side of the story by calling witnesses except in the House."

The New York Post released its Wednesday cover late on Tuesday night mocking Democratic House leaders ahead of their public impeachment hearings of President Donald Trump over his July 25 phone call with Ukraine President Volodymyr Zelensky.
The cover shows House Speaker Nancy Pelosi and House Intelligence Committee Chairman Adam Schiff dressed as clowns and features the headline: “GUILTY! NOW FOR THE TRIAL…”
Columnist Michael Goodwin writes that Schiff “takes his magic act public Wednesday as the impeachment hearings burst out of a Capitol Hill dungeon and onto television. Donald Trump’s presidency and the 2020 election likely hang on whether Schiff’s sleight of hand can survive the bright lights

A tiny deer-like creature about the size of a rabbit has been photographed in the wild for the first time in three decades in southern Vietnam, delighting conservationists who feared the species was extinct.
The silver-backed chevrotain, also called the Vietnamese mouse deer, was last recorded more than 25 years ago when a team of Vietnamese and Russian researchers obtained a dead chevrotain from a hunter.
“For so long, this species has seemingly only existed as part of our imagination,” said Vietnamese biologist An Nguyen, (Snip) “Discovering that it is, indeed, still out there, is the first step in ensuring we don’t lose it again,

Washington - Jared Kushner and other senior Trump administration officials are planning to set up web cameras to live-stream construction of President Donald Trump's border wall, going against objections from the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers and senior U.S. Customs and Border Protection officials, according to four people familiar with the White House proposal.
"There will be a wall cam, and it'll launch early next year," said a senior White House official involved in the initiative, which aims to rally public support for hundreds of miles of new border barrier Trump wants in place by next year's election.
