This is pretty amazing. A couple of Portland readers have sent me this story about what happened when the Catholic archbishop of Portland sent a priest in to reform a wackadoodle progressive parish that had gone native. The Oregonian’s report on it is hysterically biased, making the priest look like a monster; the reporter never once appears to have considered that Catholicism is a religion that has clear norms, and this parish’s previous leadership had seriously violated them, for a long time. Anyway, from the story

In the end, the building belongs to the Catholic Church and the congregation incorporated as a parish MUST be governed by canon law. The Catholic Church can shutter the doors whenever they want. The congregation would have to go elsewhere and they certainly wouldn't be allowed to call themselves a Catholic church. That is the hard reality. It all depends on how hard a line the diocese wants to take with them.

So many weird errors....."the holy sacrifice of the Mass..".
Not a Catholic, but I did go to Catholic school taught by nuns for a year. It was a very interesting
year, and I came away with respect for the Church.
Left coast nutballs are often pretty seriously unhinged folks, but the article seems a mass of errors,
typos or just ignorance. Does anyone REALLY thing it is "the holy sacrifice of the Mass"?
I suppose, since I am not a Catholic, maybe I am wrong, but I believe it would be SACRAMENT,
not sacrifice.
The article is a mess, confusing and badly written.

These people are basically harmless, and the parish will soon die out. The diocese can do what they want with the building after that. I'm much more dismayed about the gay mafia that is so thoroughly embedded in the Church hierarchy.

The author tangentially notes the source of the problem - the previous diocese Archbishop 'let' the church run amok. Privileges once granted eventually become sacred 'rights'. Obama phones, welfare, free healthcare. Remember when Romney whined it was hard to run against Santa Claus. Smart priests incorporate the laity in administrative decisions. Lazy priests let them take over.

Yes, #3, it is the holy sacrifice of the Mass. It is the sacrifice of Jesus on the Cross in an unbloody manner.

#3 The writer was a very conservative Catholic for many years prior to converting to Orthodoxy. The Catholics do at times refer to the Eucharist as the Sacrifice of the Mass. https://www.catholic.com/tract/the-sacrifice-of-the-mass
Oh and this is a blog, not an article hence his many updates at the end. I don't really keep up with Rod much now as his politics and mine don't mesh many times but I do read him ocassionally.
My take, these old hippies should pack their bags and move to the Episcopal Church. They could have their smells and bells without ever being convicted of their sins or needing to actually be Christians.

All I see is middle aged women protesting a Black African Priest.

Oh my! I am appalled! I get they want to do things their way, but they belong to a church that has hundreds of years of tradition in worship. Why are they so surprised? They don’t get to change how their church does things. That’s one of the reasons Catholics leave their church - to find a house of worship they agree with more, that suits them better. I think the parishioners were rude!

Sounds as if much of the congregation would be more suited to the Universalist Church.

Smells and bells.
Good one, #7. I may borrow that one with your permission.
I hope this doesn't sound worse than intended, but I've noticed over the years that no matter the locale, goofball cause or invented outrage, lady boomer protesters have an uncanny way of resembling themselves; sort of a Rodney Dangerfield physique topped with Gary Condit hair.
Only an observation but expressly accurate out here on the Left Coast. I live in LGBT ground zero and they're as common as hummingbirds out here.
Same with the beta males; they have a uniform as well. Skin on top with a wispy little tail in back.
I think it's almost cute, really. Woodstock wheezers flying their flags. They're still screwballs but good for them anyway.

Thank you, Catholics. I stand corrected, and I learned something. I had always heard "sacrament", but now know better.

Further info for #3. A prayer is said, just before communion in the Catholic Liturgy...
May the Lord accept this sacrifice at your hands for the praise and glory of his name, for our good and the good of all his holy church.

There is no such thing as a "Progressive Catholic". Ask one these self-identified progressive catholics if they believe in abortion. If so, then they are not Catholic.
