President Donald Trump announced Thursday that he has directed his administration to fund the Special Olympics after public backlash against the Education Department’s 2020 budget proposal completely cut funding for the organization. Speaking to reporters prior to heading to Grand Rapids, Mich., the president was asked why he would cut funding for the Special Olympics. “The Special Olympics will be funded. I just told my people, ‘I want to fund the Special Olympics,’ and I just authorized a funding of the Special Olympics. I´ve been to the Special Olympics. I think it´s incredible, and I just authorized a funding. I

I agree with the President´s decision. Let´s pull the funding from the department that funds crosses in urine and bizarre studies of frogs and sexual habits of cockroaches.
The Special Olympics is a much better use of our funds than Planned Parenthood--and I juxtapose these two on purpose.
MAGA!!! KAG!!! Mr. President, I salute you!

Personally, I think the entrants in the Special Olympics give it their all. No politics, no endorsements, just hard work. President Trump did the right thing. I´ll also bet no one takes a knee during the National Anthem.

Special Olympics have more sponsors than they have competitors. It´s the ultimate ´safe´ charitable donation.
They can get along just fine without taxpayer dollars - not least because taxpayer-funded stadiums, tracks, and other facilities are already part and parcel of the games.

As the father of an autistic child who participates in Special Olympics, I applaud POTUS´ move here. It´s a wonderful program worthy of government support, and while I give DeVos credit for trying to rein in spending, the optics here were horrible and there are some truly awful spending programs that should be cut before going after programs for children with special needs.

The audacious hypocrisy of the left is dumbfounding. If they had their way, there would be no "special needs" children born - they would all be aborted!

I know some people who have competed in the Special Olympics and I too applaud the POTUS. Defund NPR, defund Planned Parenthood.

#4 true - but it´s the optics.
And the other side of the optics is that Trump can now be seen as changing his (cabinet´s) mind when the facts are presented.

Reagan made a moderate effort to get spending under control - - but was thwarted by an overwhelming demonrat congress.
Trump? No such effort - - no such excuse.
He just loves to spend and spend.

Simply because of the optics, the Special Olympics funds are the last thing that should be cut from the Department of Education budget. But I think the Department should be dissolved entirely.

The Kennedys are relieved.

It´s the optics, and this is a program that should be funded by government since it is a benefit to all.
Heck, when they can say $5 billion in the budget is a rounding error, there is plenty of money to be allocated to fund the grant.

President Trump understands the optics here. I wish he could get rid of Betsy DeVos, who was probably the most knuckle-headed appointment he has made.

As far as I´m concerned the entire US Department of Education should be shutdown. I´m not for spending taxpayer money for optics. There is never an end to "optics."

This is irritating. I get it that this looks bad in the news, but we have to stop funding things with the government that the private sector WILL fund, and this is one of them.
Trump knows better than I do how to choose your battles, and I suppose, upon reflection that this is not "a hill to die on" from a PR standpoint.
Ultimately, EVERYBODY needs to take a hit. The best plan I have heard is to reduce EVERYTHING by 5%. That level of truly universal reduction would be very easy to defend, everybody is feeling exactly the same pain.

Everyone, including this pro-life conservative, wants to see children with Down Syndrome have this opportunity.
So how ironic is it that Leftists –who would abort these children before they even see the light of day– are the loudest screamers for gov´t funding for Special Olympics?
Trump did the wisest thing in this case.
But otoh Betsey DeVos likely had cause to suspect that funds are being wasted. Why? Because so many good causes grow into overgrown behemoths that suck up taxpayer dollars. Those $ often go more to the benefit of their board members, than to the good causes those charities were founded to help.

Having volunteered at a Special Olympics and worked with autistic children, I´m not at all clear why this needs public funding or a big bureaucracy behind it.
Children play. It´s what they do. Organizing them to compete requires chalk, lines, and appropriate supervision. The more organization you bring into this, the more money you need and thus the more administration.
Who´s it all for? The kids? Or the adults who want to feel better about kids who got a raw deal?
When I volunteered, it was a quiet afternoon in a local venue. Minimum sponsorship. Lots of volunteers. If money was changing hands somewhere, I didn´t see it. It was easy.
It was child´s play.

The correct word, apparently unstylishly too many syllables for modern tastes, is "appearances" - Optics is the study of light and it´s reflection and refraction.

As the Mother of a Special Needs "Child" I think I just might qualify to speak to this issue.
My Crippled (he needs a walker), Legally Blind, Retarded son, having had a lifetime of pain & some terrible surgeries looks forward to Special Olympics just slightly less than Christmas. He has over a hundred medals of which is is very proud and has worked hard to get them! He´s a devout Christian, loves people, always (most always) very cheerful & good natured person and by the way....he has feelings and enough IQ to feel rejection and hateful remarks.
God Bless President Trump for standing up for the most vulnerable, joked about, forgotten about (REAL) Minority there is.

This is an unforced error, committed by the President.
Government should not spend one cent for anything other than what is needed -- not wanted but needed, and preferably critically needed -- by all of us.
If I want to support Special Olympics, let me do it with my own money, don´t make me do it with my tax dollars.

Let’s remember that this was just Dept. of Ed. funding. Special Olympics would not have gone away. DeVos made the point that there are many other worthy groups doing similar things that don’t get federal grants.
As a number of above posters have pointed out, this case illustrates why government spending, i.e. deficit spending, will never go away. Choices should be made based on whether they are the prudent thing. “Optics”, appearances, call it what you will, are a terrible reason for not doing what should be done. Someone will always complain when the spigot is turned off. Turn it off anyway.

Someone ask Rand Paul about his principles and the financing of Special Olympics.
There are a lot of "liberals" around here willing to spend money on private interests, such as Special Olympics, then decry the deficit, etc.
It´s not a question of being "deserving" or "benefits so many"...it´s NOT anything but a private interest. It should get zero public dollars.

Heard yesterday that the Special Olympics gathers in $100 million yearly from other donations. I don´t see why they need more.
