SALT LAKE CITY -- Bruce Pearl´s Auburn rebuilding project took a massive leap. The Tigers are headed to the Sweet 16 for the first time in 16 years. Bryce Brown scored 25 points and hit seven 3-pointers, leading Auburn to an 89-75 takedown of mighty Kanas Saturday night in the Midwest Region. The Tigers (28-9) were a surprise last season, earning a share of their first SEC title since 1999 and winning an NCAA Tournament game.

State Sen. Dan Bishop easily won Tuesday’s 9th District Republican primary, three months after state officials took the unprecedented step of throwing out a 2018 election marred by fraud allegations. Bishop will face Democrat Dan McCready and two third-party candidates on Sept. 10 in what’s expected to be the nation’s most closely watched special election. With 93% of votes in, Bishop defeated Union County Commissioner Stony Rushing 48% to 20%. Among 10 candidates, former Mecklenburg County Commissioer Matthew Ridenhour was the only other one in double figures, with 17%.
City officials say the question is no longer whether to drop the word Dixie from the name of the Dixie Classic Fair, but what the new name will be. The magnitude of Auburn’s trek through the NCAA Tournament hasn’t been lost on some of the school’s biggest sports legends. Bruce Pearl’s Tigers defeated Kentucky 77-71 to capture the Midwest Regional title Sunday. In doing so, Auburn has knocked off back-to-back-to-back college basketball royalty to advance to the school’s first Final Four. Before beating the Wildcats, college basketball’s winningest program, Auburn became the first program to defeat Kansas and North Carolina, teams that rank second and third on the all-time victory list, in successive games.
Fifth-seeded Auburn ran past No. 1 seed North Carolina on Friday night in the Sweet 16. The Tigers beat the Tar Heels, 97-80, featuring a barrage of second-half 3-pointers. And that sent the Tigers on to the Elite Eight for only the second time and first since 1986.

I’m probably second to none in my dislike for Meghan Markle. The millions of Americans who were paying attention throughout the 2020 election campaign all became painfully aware of the fact that Joe Biden’s cognitive abilities were slipping and slipping fast. His wife, as the person closest to him, should have been the one to call the campaign quits in order to reduce stress on the man.
Instead, apparently so anxious to become the First Lady by any means necessary, Mrs. Biden continued to push her failing husband’s campaign forward as if he were mentally qualified.
