Warren calls for ‘full-blown conversation about reparations’

Sen. Elizabeth Warren (D-Mass.) gave her most detailed answer to date on the question of reparations for black Americans as a means of addressing centuries of slavery and legal discrimination. In a CNN town hall on Monday night in Jackson, Miss., Warren became the first 2020 presidential candidate serving in the Senate to endorse a House bill that would create a commission to study reparation proposals. “I love the idea of this congressional commission,” she said at Jackson State, a historically black university. “I believe it’s time to start the national, full-blown conversation about reparations.” The bill

These conversations should begin with full-blown negotiations with the British, Spanish and a few African governments. They can pay for establishing and profiting from the North American slavery business. Then we can have the "full-blown" conversation about how much my family is due from these funds for their service in the Union army to emancipate.

Since Democrats have a monopoly on collective guilt, it should be simple enough for EACH of them to open their checkbook and write a large check for reparations.
Rest assured that 1 or 2 checks will NOT be enough.
Many, many Americans are immigrants and had ZERO connection to any slavery and as such need no "´conversation." Also, any present-day slaveholders in America should consider reparations. And put a few bucks aside and send them to the Fund-Me website for the Mass Senator´s psychiatric expenses.

They are asserting one more time their belief that blacks can´t compete on a level playing field.

I didn´t have anyone fighting for the North, but if I had, I would be furious over this. (Just color my family Confederate. And yes, we did have some slave holders---just read my 6th great grandfather´s will tonight that passed slaves, specific by name, to his heirs. And of course it *named* his heirs, which was what I was after anyway.) Slavery was unfortunate to all those it touched, both slaves and masters. The Irish were being starved by the English; in the 18th century they might have jumped at the opportunity to work as free laborers in America. But I digress.

Before the civil war only dems owned slaves. Who should pay for reparations? I guess the dems and those blacks who owned them.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=blJKdNr5VSU

3000 blacks owned 12,000 slaves "So what do the actual numbers of black slave owners and their slaves tell us? In 1830, the year most carefully studied by Carter G. Woodson, about 13.7 percent (319,599) of the black population was free. Of these, 3,776 free Negroes owned 12,907 slaves, out of a total of 2,009,043 slaves owned in the entire United States, so the numbers of slaves owned by black people"

Also, if a generation of Blacks is going to receive a check but have never seen a slave, how far into the future are we expected to pay, Stardate 3050 or some such, or is this a perpetual democrat program like affirmative action? Here´s my thinking about reparations:

(1) The Civil War, 14th Amendment, Reconstruction, the massive "Great Society" social welfare program, etc. have already paid for slavery. There is not a single person alive today from that era that would legitimately be eligible for reparations.

(2) However, we have the Jim Crow era, which was perpetuated by DEMOCRATS, with their military arm, the Ku Klux Klan. And, there are many people still alive who were negatively impacted by this racist set of policies by DEMOCRATS.

(3) Therefore, I think that the DEMOCRATIC Party should pay reparations to any person affected -- and still alive -- by the Jim Crow laws of the South. This to me seems a reasonable case for reparations.

(4) Ball´s in your court, Dims.

No, is the only answer.

There are NO people alive who have any first hand knowledge of this, and any claims otherwise are lies.

All of us have had some problems in our past generations, and we are what we are by our own efforts and often with help of our parent´s efforts.

The last slave would have had to been born in 1863 or so (and would never have any memory of being a slave) and would have died at least half a century ago. Almost all actual adult slaves would have died at least a century ago. Likely the closest relations out there are great-grand parents, most will be more distant. Few people ever meet any great grandparents.

For comparison, the last Civil War veteran, a 106 year old who served as a drummer boy, died 63 years ago. This is the most extreme case.

Give this BS a rest.

But then, I am using facts and logic....which are inapplicable to a lot of folks, they cannot grasp either.

Gimmme, gimme, gimme. Any excuse.

I am sick and tired of the "George Orwell´s 1984" misuse of language. From the etymology (history of a word) dictionary, reparations means:

An "act of repairing or mending" is attested from c. 1400. Reparations "compensation for war damaged owed by the aggressor".

No "American" nor even colonist ever sailed to Africa and captured a single slave. A few...some indicate that less than 10% of southerners owned even one slave...made the legal purchase of "merchandise" offered at auction. There was a global market, and the terms of trade with Great Briton (which at the time "ruled" over the colonies) practically required the use of slave labor to meet production contracts.

This country began the abolitionist movement, and as posted above many Americans died to free the slaves during the Civil War. More people have immigrated into the country after the Civil War than were living here before then.

Another thing you don´t see mentioned is that from 1865 to 1960, every town of any size had a segregated thriving black middle/upper class, with merchants, doctors and lawyers. In that time:

Fewer black than white couples had their first child within a year of marriage.
More black than white families attended church together throughout their lives.
Fewer black than white students dropped out of school before graduating.
Fewer black than white marriages ended in divorce.

A significant provision making any student loan forgiveness tax-free has been included in the $1.9 trillion federal coronavirus stimulus package that’s working its way through Congress and will likely soon be signed into law. Currently, any student loan debt canceled by the government can be considered taxable and levied at the borrower’s normal income tax rate. For example, if someone earns $50,000 a year, and was at a 22% tax rate, and received $30,000 in student loan forgiveness, they might be slapped with a $6,600 bill from the IRS. Soon, borrowers may be off the hook from these payments. What

His wife, as the person closest to him, should have been the one to call the campaign quits in order to reduce stress on the man. Instead, apparently so anxious to become the First Lady by any means necessary, Mrs. Biden continued to push her failing husband’s campaign forward as if he were mentally qualified.
