Here’s a story that by my account, flew relatively under the radar—according to an October Facebook post by an organization of firefighters in Hollywood, Florida:
On Sunday Oct 1st, a Tesla Model S [sic] was attempting to back a jet ski into the water at the Polk Street boat ramp, when it lost traction and slid into the inter-coastal [sic]. The salt water reacted with the the [sic] vehicle’s electronics causing them to short, sparking a fire that burned underwater for an extended period of time.
The fire was allowed to burn underwater until it extinguished itself.

Earlier this week a Tesla burst into flames while on the dealers lot in Ft Lauterdale. Only a few cars involved, but with dozens of the in one place , it could have been a conflagration seen from space.

Does any space head think anyone would buy a used EV? Has the expense of no after purchase value been added to the cost of one of these disasters?

The current US Government has addopted Stupid Ideas as a way of doing business across the board. EVs being manufactured as toys for the rich and frivolous crowd is fine with me but as a forced replacement for the many fine cars we have now, they are overly expensive, unwise and dangerous. The power grid won't support more than about five percent of the driving population owning EVs and won't for many years.

So trying to escape a hurricane and getting into deep water will lock you into a burning car?!
Southerners, people who need to travel more than two hours to see family, people who like to go on vacation.... too smart to buy electric cars.

Let's see. Backing a boat into salt water, with an EV. What could go wrong? Seeing as how the underneath of the car is nothing but battery, you're looking for trouble.

Some ramps down into the water are steeper than expected. Rear wheel drive cars or trucks can get stuck on steep, mossy ramps. Rather embarrassing. Most people who regularly tow boats or jet skis on trailers have gasoline or diesel pickup trucks, preferably with four wheel drive, a bit of ground clearance, and a trailer hitch.
Getting the watercraft into the water is easy if one has the right equipment, but backing an e-car into salt water?? Oh, oh, oh, stupid. Instant fire, so just leave the car underwater while the 1,500 pound Li-ion battery in the $150,000 Tesla burns itself out, maybe. (Even after burning for a hour underwater, it might catch fire again weeks later at the wrecker lot.) As another has said, the batteries are in the bottom of the vehicle, just above the overtaxed wheels. What could possibly go wrong?

Re #11, just FYI, Teslas are four wheel drive. Although certainly not high ground clearance.

I guess it is now about time for every authority to post a sign at each launching ramp for which they are responsible that prohibits putting an EV on the ramp. This should also be broadcast on TV and radio as a public service announcement.

Re #12: I'm quite aware of that. That's one thing that makes them so fast off the line. Under maximum acceleration, the Tesla S Plaid (1.020 bhp, 1,050 lb-ft torque), by the time it has traveled one car length, is going about 28 mph. On a fully rubbered in drag strip with tires at the proper temperature, the Tesla Plaid can reach 60 mph in 1.98 seconds. To me, that would be uncomfortable.

ALL EV's should come with 4 Glass break hammers (pointed end) so anyone in the failing Pile of Death can get the H out in an emergency! The hammers should be in a compartment in the door for easy access!

I bought a new car about a year ago and am generally pretty happy with it. The manufacturer keeps sending me e-mails pushing their electric cars. I like my gasoline car. Why would I want to trade it in for a stupid electric after only a year?

Eight people in one family in Brooklyn perished the other day from fire started by the Lithium battery of an electric scooter. These occurrences are going to get exponentially more frequent as there more EVs and they age.The Einsteins at the DoT either don’t have a clue or seem to care.

Jiminy crickets. How many jokes are around about wives trying to launch watercraft’s successfully? If you’ve ever had the pleasure of launching a craft, any craft, the smaller the craft the further into the water the trailer has to go to achieve buoyancy . Taking an EV was the height of foolishness similar to taking your blow dryer into the bathtub.

FTA: "The car's electronically powered doors are closed, and whatever malfunction is occurring won't permit the doors to open."
Growing up in south Florida (well, pretty much any place in Florida), where driving into water is a valid hazard, it took many, many, many years to get over the thought of being trapped in a vehicle whose doors and windows wouldn't work.
There's learning curve here - the electric car tech is not the same as the petroleum tech. If you're going to drive one of those things, you better learn the new tech -- and read the owner's manual. (It would be better if that warning light that said "get out of the car" also had an instruction about the manual override on the doors - for panicked people.)

Re #15. Yes, extreme performance. My Cayman is reported to do 0-60 in 5.1 seconds....which is way plenty fast for any purpose I have. And he loss in range from such EV shenanigans is massive.

Lithium batteries cannot be extinguished by water, in fact, the lithium reacts vigorously with water, and it will burn just fine completely submerged. Proof that a fire department spraying water on a burning lithium battery is only cooling the surrounding area, it has zero effect on the fire itself.
