Tampa—A Dunkin’ employee faces a manslaughter charge after punching a customer who then fell, hit his head and later died, police say. The single punch that led to the arrest of 27-year-old Corey Pujols was thrown May 4 at the Dunkin’ store in the Marathon gas station at 410 S 50th St., just south of the Lee Roy Selmon Expressway, according to an arrest report. Pujols told police the man called him a racial slur. Police and fire rescue crews were called to the store about 1:30 p.m. and found a 77-year-old man unconscious and bleeding from the head.

Prosecutors call this a 'one punch homicide.' In my younger days, I walked away from most confrontations for precisely this reason. And if walking away didn't work, I sat on the person.

I don't believe anyone who claims racial slurs, random nooses, words painted on doors, etc. It is always thrown out as sympathy, a defense, or a "look at me" out and out fraud. I am of the sticks and stones, etc. persuasion. I would probably laugh if some old or young goof said something provocative towards me. "Do you kiss your momma with that mouth?"

My son is deaf, and white. He works loading trucks at Fedex. A black coworker who doesn't like my son harrassed him and called him "retard". He is NOT retarded, and besides that pejorative is every bit as forbidden as the "n-word" my son blurted back at him in anger and frustration. Now my son is suspended, while his black tormentor continues working. The HR people "reviewing the case" at Fedex are black. If he is fired, I WILL see a lawyer.

The MMA wannabe's story about being racially slandered is doubtful. These days further examination reveals that most of such stories are greatly exaggerated or outright fabrications. But not all. In 1973, when I was personally involved in a racial dust up at a golf tournament, it was for real, and I very nearly got taken apart by two white racists trying to rattle a friend of mine with a putt to win. (He's still my friend, and these idiots, if they're still alive, are still morons, probably on meth, toothless, in some nasty place.) Violent people's penchant for fisticuffs causes dozens of probably unintended murders every year. Outside Tampa Stadium a healthy young woman sitting on a pickup truck tailgate, slipped off, hit her head once on the pavement, a d died. Older people, particularly if they are on blood thinners after after a heart attack or stroke, are extremely susceptible to death from a subdural hematoma, which can happen after a punch to the chin or temple. It doesn't even have to be a hard punch as long as it's a solid punch. Very dangerous. Some people, including YrHmblSrvnt, are susceptible. I'd like to be able to do martial arts again, but no. Too risky.

Several years ago I read a book by Randall Kennedy titled "N*gg*r" where he made the case that being called the slur can be used as a defense for killing another. This may be one of those cases that tests that premise.

Ridiculous, #12. I was involved in the jury pool for a case much like this. A thug punched his victim while the victim had his hands in his pants pockets. He was either unconscious or stunned and couldn't get his hands out and fell back cracked his head on concrete, and died. The case was manslaughter, and the thug was convicted, without me on the jury, as it turned out. Maybe smoking a bit less of that Colorado weed may make it clearer.

Am opposed to physical assaults. I wouldn't hit anyone even if they called me a Democrat. But the thing to do if you get rotten service is just to walk away and never come back. Don't get in a yelling argument with anyone. It's not worth it. I have heard of people of the same race, ethnicity getting shot and killed because someone called someone a son of a Hillary.

In Del Rio, a once-quiet part of the border in Texas, law enforcement said arrests of Border Patrol sex offenders are up a staggering 2,500% this year. But this useful product comes from crude oil, which is often criticized by activists and experts as harmful to the environment, citing oil spills and fracking incidents. Recent studies from the last decade have shown that petroleum isn't as efficient as some once thought. Now, companies, engineers and scientists aim to replace it with plant-based oils, specifically soybeans. The Goodyear Tire & Rubber Co. recently announced its goal to replace all petroleum-based products with soybean oil by 2040.
