A Russian fighter jet escorted a US reconnaissance aircraft over the Pacific Ocean, the Russian Defense Ministry said Friday — as tensions between Moscow and Washington mount.Tass, a Russian news agency, reported that ministry officials detected a US RC-135 reconnaissance aircraft over the Pacific along the southeastern coast of the 777-mile Kamchatka Peninsula in Russia’s far eastern border.“A MiG-31 fighter jet was scrambled from an airfield in the Kamchatka region to identify and escort the plane,” the statement by the Russian Defense Ministry read. “The crew identified it as a US RC-135

I bet they reopen my old remote base in Alaska. Except for no families allowed, it was a little slice of heaven. Lots of wildlife right up to the door, gorgeous tundra scenery, but so cold it would suck the air right out of you when it went below -20. Probably my best assignment. Sigh.

If done professionally, this is absolutely SOP, means nothing at all. We send electronic intel aircraft along the Russian coast, and they send electronic intel aircraft along our coasts, and have since the very early 60s. Family members have intercepted and escorted Russian Bear aircraft along the east coast for the USN since the early 60s, and Russian fighters have been escorting ours for decades, too.
The only problem comes with an incursion into Russian airspace....they used to be pretty trigger happy, including shooting down a Korean airliner that was off course. And occasionally an idiot Russian pilot, or more commonly an idiot ChiCom pilot makes a too close pass that is stupidly showing off how "bada**" the pilot thinks he is.

#2, yes it did, I am certain. It isn't much reported because it is common and meaningless.

The world could be on the verge of nuclear war and all the press talks about is the flu.

Even Jimmy Carter, in his total and complete incompetency, never got us into a war with Russia. Not-my-president Lyin' Joe biden is sure trying!!!
However, Jimmy Carter has managed to move from being the worst president in history to the third worse (behind biden and Ovomit) before he dies. I sure never thought that was physically possible!!!

Why do we even have reconnaissance aircraft when satelites are able to detect when any one of us passes gas, indoor or out. Even if we don’t invite Siri to listen in, which I don't. (so I hear from internet, I’m not an expert).

The MiG 31 is not a "fighter jet." It's a jet fighter! I don't understand how the media started using the term "fighter jet."

#8, satellites do not have the flexibility or ability to quickly change altitude or orbital declination to look at targets of opportunity. Altitude is relatively easy to change, but the angle of the orbit is very difficult to adjust. For example, just to change the declination of the space shuttle’s orbit by 2.5 degrees would use up all of the shuttle’s fuel. For satellites and other spacecraft, the angle is pretty well set at launch and that’s it. Anyway, to change any of these parameters requires permission from god so to speak.

Look, I served on an aircraft carrier, two cruises to Gulf of Tonkin. Both times upon returning to San Diego, Russian "Bears" flew over the carrier in the Pacific on the way home. All hands got out on deck and flipped them off. Ignorant reporters with no knowledge of history write as if this is the first time Russians have ever done this.

Thanks #3 for some historical perspective.
For the record, that MiG wasn't 'escorting' our RC-135 ANYWHERE. He was just performing a routine intercept. I'm guessing it was termed "Safe" and "Professional". As opposed to those idiot Chinese who pulled some maneuver in front of that EP-3 near Hainan Island back in April 2001.

#8, you are misinformed. Sats take pix. These aircraft sample radar signals and other electronic signatures so that our aircraft can recognize when they are probed by Russian systems, and can develop jamming and otgger countermeasures.
Very necessary, and must be done regularly to keep up with constant changes and advances.

#10, I think it is like "tarmac" for the parking ramp at an airport. Brits call what we call blacktop or asphalt, tarmacadam, and the Brit slang is 'tarmac'. But it just means a kind of paving material. So, some Brit reporters spoke about leaders 'walking across the tarmac' when they got off an airplane, like 'walking across the asphalt'.
Since American reporters are 1) stupid and 2) pathetically fawning over "Britishisms", imagining that by using British terms they will sound smart like they think that British reporters do, so American reporters (ignorantly) thought that "tarmac" was the high tone term for the parking ramp or apron at an airport. So now, virtually all US reporters call the parking ramp or parking apron at an airport "the tarmac". Eye roll.
And Brits say "fighter jets" and over the last 10-20 years, stupid American reporters have glommed onto this British term, too. And you are right....they are jet fighters, as opposed to "prop fighters". And since there hasn't been a prop powered fighter in about 50-60 years, the whole "jet" thing is stupid anyway. They are ALL jets. Fighter aircraft would be good, as opposed to bomber aircraft. Never forget that reporters are ignorant AND stupid, winners in two separate categories. Those seem to be prerequisites for the job.
