I’m not a great believer in polls, especially right now. I’m sure there is some truth to them, some attempts at accuracy. Pollsters need a modicum of precision or they lose credibility. And if they lose credibility, they lose money. But, at best, I’m suspicious about polls, especially several months before an election, especially since 2016 and 2022. The only poll that will really matter is the one taken on November 5. But currently, just about all the polls indicate that Donald Trump is ahead, and some say by a significant margin, even in most of the so-called “swing states.”

Eloy Alberto Zayas-Berrier was part of the infamous Mariel boatlift that brought 125,000 Cubans, including criminals and mental hospital patients, to the U.S. in 1980. He’s been in the U.S. ever since in a bizarre legal limbo. He can’t qualify for citizenship and Cuba has refused to take him back, so he’s been stuck on “parole.” He remains here with only the barest of legal protections and cannot get a green card. He is decidedly not a citizen. That did not, however, stop him from showing up at an early-voting location in North Carolina on Nov. 5, 2016, where he not only registered and claimed to be a citizen, but also

President Joe Biden’s seemingly unassailable “blue wall” appears to be crumbling in the wake of former President Donald Trump’s greatest political comeback in history. The “blue wall” represents three battleground states: Michigan, Pennsylvania, and Wisconsin. Biden must win these states to prevent Trump from winning reelection. The states are imperative for Biden due to Trump’s surge in the sunbelt states of Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina. In those four states, Trump leads Biden between three and six points in Arizona, Georgia, Nevada, and North Carolina, FiveThirtyEight’s polling averages show.

Anti-capitalism is back in fashion. Even Marxism, which many had declared dead after the collapse of socialism, is experiencing a renaissance. Books such as those by the left-wing French economist Thomas Piketty are popular. In my home country, Germany, a book called Das Ende des Kapitalismus (The End of Capitalism), whose author advocates the introduction of a planned economy, has climbed the bestseller lists. She cites the British war economy of the Second World War as a potential model. In her opinion, we should introduce this kind of economic system as quickly as possible, as it is the only way we can save our planet.

This week is the 150th running of the Kentucky Derby -- thought to be the longest continuous sporting event held at one venue in the whole world. As I wrote a while back, it’s also the most anti-woke celebration on the planet, floated on an ocean of that most American liquid -- bourbon whiskey. But then, there is just a lot of great history and lessons to learn in the racing game, especially as it all tends to reinforce the conservative worldview. For example, we have the sad story of human greed and the late, great Arlington Park racetrack outside Chicago, in Arlington Heights.
