SAN FRANCISCO — Another major retailer in San Francisco’s Union Square is closing next month. Saks Fifth Avenue is closing its downtown store at 384 Post St., a Saks Global spokesperson said in a statement. The retailer cited the decision to close as one to “focus on long-term growth.” The store’s last day will be on Saturday, May 10. Saks says customers can visit its sister company store, Neiman Marcus, about two blocks away on Stockton Street. The two companies are both subsidiaries of Saks Global. While we saw meaningful engagement and success through the appointment-only format, we have made

A popular street food vendor who serves free meals to the homeless on L.A.’s Skid Row was brutally beaten by a suspect who remains at large. Chris Bailey, known on TikTok as @kloverkinglosangeles, can typically be seen on the busy streets of downtown Los Angeles cooking on his food cart and offering meals to those who stop by. On April 22, around noontime, Bailey had set up his station near 1st Street and Grand Avenue when he was approached by a stranger and violently beaten in broad daylight. “I was packing up, putting my stuff back in my car and

Political parties need votes from people, and voters do not like being murdered or seeing their countrymen killed. So you would expect all politicians to take their side on least on this. But when it comes to Democrats, you’d be wrong about that. (Snip) Democrats have long been wandering down this path, but now they seem to be running down it. And when you watch the latest chapter of this saga — the love affair between Democratic politicians and MS-13 gangsters — you almost can’t avoid asking what the political left has against our country, and why it is so

WASHINGTON – Since the pandemic, federal student loan borrowers have been mostly protected from the harshest consequences of not paying back their loans. That's about to change, and quickly. Linda McMahon, the secretary of the U.S. Department of Education, said the federal government will resume involuntary collections for borrowers in default on May 5. In two weeks, loan holders will start the process of taking money from the paychecks of borrowers who've missed their payments for 270 days or more. They'll also start moving to collect from other federal payments, including tax refunds and Social Security benefits. The change, which McMahon

Democrats’ panic over what they stand for and whether they can credibly compete beyond the bluest states is already erupting in the rush to recruit Senate candidates across the country for next year — a desperate effort to dig out from years of losses that have them far from power at a moment they need it most. Will Democrats, indeed, compete everywhere in 2026? Will leaders allocate money even in tough races, or will they consolidate conservatively around their best bets? How will they handle what could be candidates who range from being aligned with Bernie Sanders to occasionally voting

SAN FRANCISCO -- Progressive icon and former U.S. Rep. Barbara Lee declared victory Saturday as the new mayor of troubled Oakland, a San Francisco Bay Area city reeling from economic stagnation, crime and homelessness. Lee issued a statement Saturday as mayor-elect, saying that her chief opponent, Loren Taylor, had called to concede the April 15 race. (Snip) Oakland has about 400,000 residents and is deeply liberal and multicultural, the birthplace of the Black Panther Party and claimed by former Vice President Kamala Harris as her hometown. But Oakland also is reeling from homeless tents, public drug use, illegal sideshows, gun violence

The Los Angeles Fire Department has shared a report outlining the impact that an increasing homeless population has had on its resources in recent years. (Snip) The report pointed out that the homeless population has “significantly increased,” placing an increased demand for emergency services on the LAFD. From 2018 to 2024, the unhoused population in Los Angeles has grown by 44.6% from 31,285 to 45,252 individuals, according to the Los Angeles Homeless Services Authority. Meanwhile, fire calls involving homeless persons during that same period accounted for 32.91%, or nearly one-third, of all LAFD fire activity, the report states. More specifically

David Hogg is exactly what we expect from a citizen touched by unthinkable tragedy. Having survived the 2018 massacre at Douglas High School in Parkland, Florida, he immediately dove into constructive political action, first on serious gun reform, and then within Democratic party politics, rising to his present position as DNC vice-chairman. Which makes it difficult to point out that his latest project couldn't be more ill-advised and, worse, incredibly ill-timed. It is a perfect example of something that is in the right place. but at the wrong time. From Politico: Leaders We Deserve, which Hogg co-founded in 2023, announced

Gayle King on Tuesday suggested it was sexist to characterize her brief trip into space with Blue Origin as a “space ride.” King and several other celebrities — including pop star Katy Perry — took part in an all-woman space flight Monday morning. The fiancee of Blue Origin founder Jeff Bezos was also part of the group. In the aftermath of the 11-minute trip, critics wondered what the purpose of the trip was. Some even flatly dismissed it as a publicity stunt. The next morning, King and fellow Blue Origin crewmate Aisha Bowe talked about scientific impact similar trips on

Sen. Cory Booker (D-N.J.) shot up in a poll that asked about the 2028 Democratic presidential primary after his recent record-breaking Senate speech. Booker placed second in a hypothetical primary behind former Vice President Kamala Harris in an Echelon Insights poll released this week, drawing support from 11 percent of respondents. In the same poll last month, Booker drew 2 percent support among party respondents — putting him in line with roughly a dozen other Democratic figures with low single-digit support. Booker, who is serving in his second term, set a record for the longest Senate speech in history in early

VAN NUYS, LOS ANGELES -- New details were revealed in the tragic death of a 7-year-old girl in Van Nuys on Friday. Eyewitness News spoke with the suspect's fiancé, who is still in shock and grieving. Police identified the child's mother, 37-year-old Graciela Castellanos, as the primary suspect in the girl's death. She's accused of drowning her own daughter. A neighbor told ABC7 she heard the young child screaming, "Mommy, please no. Mommy, please no." (Snip) "First, I want to say that my wife was an almost perfect mom. Los Angeles has long been the “Entertainment Capital of the World” as the film and television stars congregate to the area to film the next big thing — but a new study shows that the region’s claim to that title could be in jeopardy. According to nonprofit FilmLA, which helps production companies book filming spaces and obtain permits, the occupancy rate of soundstages across the L.A. area was at 63% in 2024 — a dramatic drop off from 90% in 2022 and the mid 90s from pre-pandemic times. The 63% rate also represents a 6% drop from 2023, marking a
