I count myself as one of the lucky ones to have grown up without the distraction of cell phones, social media, and the lure of the internet. That is why I am glad to see the growing movement to ban cell phones from schools. This movement is reinforced by Trump’s new Health and Human Services (HHS) secretary Robert F. Kennedy, Jr.
Kennedy recently announced he is working with various states to remove all cell phones from schools in what many are dubbing the “Bell to Bell” initiative. Secretary Kennedy believes cell phones are not only detrimental to a child’s mental health, but have also been shown to cause physical damage

You might put controls on your child's phone. But the parents of the kid sitting next to him might not. It's a risk we as a society can ill afford.

Should have happened long ago. And some idiot parents will complain that "I need to be able to get in touch with my child, I need an exception"
No.
Your child can't learn while playing on the phone.

A little corner of my mind reminds me of what schools tried to during zoom classes in the COVID pandemic. They tried to force parents to leave the kid's room during zoom class cuz the school didn't want parents to know what was being taught.
So if all cells are excluded no kid can prove what is really going on in the school. How many brawls, bullys, bashings have we realized in schools because there ARE cellphones available? All that will disappear and everything will look just fine...the way the teacher's union wants it.
Just sayn'

What about those kids who rely on their phones to monitor serious health issues, like diabetes? Like it or not, cell phones have become a way of life for us, and to completely cut them out of the kids' lives for a big chunk of the day is stupid--and even dangerous in some cases.
There has to be a better way.

#4, sorry for the kids with those concerns, but people existed for most of history without the need for cell phones. Diabetics can check their blood sugar the old-fashioned way.

From a teacher: Getting phones out of schools would do more to raise tests scores than anything else except get all parents to participate in the students education process.

#5: But it's not just "checking their blood sugar"! It's monitoring it, too. Like I said, some people are dependent on their phones to take care of serious health issues, and simply saying they can do it "the old fashioned way" is no solution at all, but rather a total disregard of people's needs, as well as how hi-tech devices meet those needs today.

I agree with banning phones during school time, but arguing that 'radiation' is causing all these is off track.
Cell phones also produce electromagnetic radiation which has been shown to do neurological damage to kids when it's around them all day and to cause cellular damage and even cancer. So cell phone use and social media use on the cell phone has been directly connected with depression, with poor performance in schools, with suicidal ideation, with substance abuse.

At my kid's school, they are allowed to physical possess their phones but use during class is banned and if they violate that the phone is taken until end of day.
Does a kid need to monitor their blood sugar more than once per 45 minute class? If so I'm sure an exception can be made for the very rare few kids with medical issues. The rest of them can pay full attention.

With all due respect #5 its the height of ignorance to say diabetic children should go back to the barbaric method of pricking their fingers with a needle instead of using technology. I have 4 type I diabetic children and that comment infuriates me. They all use a G7 continuous glucose monitor and a pump that works off that monitor. The phone is used as MEDICAL EQUIPMENT to monitor alerts and blood sugars. They don’t get to check their diabetes at the door of school therefore their LIFE SAVING DEVICES shouldn’t be excluded either. Without the G7 they can’t use their pump so you’re damning diabetic kids to crude shots and finger pricks and health issues. Such compassions/off

Color me highly skeptical #7. If proven, then they get an exception. ((% of more have zero legitimate need for a phone during school hours.

I remember when hand held calculators flooded the schools. Instead of learning arithmetic, the students learned to push buttons. Cell phones are not only a distraction, they are an obstacle to learning.

This should be happening nationwide. It is insane how kids are always on their phones. Very bad for them mentally too with the bullying and all the crap on the internet they are seeing/reading.
