Is Trump Looking for a Grand Bargain With China?

Original Article

[T]rying to reach a grand bargain with China — what [Trump] was hinting at — would be exactly the wrong approach at this or any other moment. Trump has already tried to reach an accommodation with China: his Phase One Trade pact of January 2020. He calls it "the best trade deal" ever, but it is now widely viewed as a bust. The Chinese, during an election year in America, never honored its terms. [Chinese President Xi Jinping's] actions are the inevitable result of China's communist political system, which idealizes violence, struggle, and domination. This system means there can be no accommodation with the Communist Party.

As someone who deals with China a fair amount, they do not understand the concept of a contract, culturally. They breach when it is advantageous to them. No qualms about it.

I think Trump knows how to handle China better than "journalists" do. They may be acting tough but their entire society is fragile and going broke.

Poster #1, Gordon Chang’s insight to the inner workings of China is one I would trust above most anyone else. I think posters #2 & 3 pretty much nailed it as far as the main difficulty in dealing with China. I thinkTrump’s second time around with China as with everything else he does in his second term will be done from the learnings of his first term.

Here is the key details of the Phase One Trade Pact that China did NOT honor: Consistent with the two sides’ projections, China is committing that over the next two years it will import no less than $200 billion of U.S. goods and services ON TOP OF the amounts that it imported in 2017 in four broad categories:  China’s imports of U.S. manufactured goods, such as industrial machinery, electrical equipment, pharmaceutical products, aircraft, vehicles, optical and medical instruments, iron and steel, solar-grade polysilicon, hardwood lumber, and chemical products, among other goods, will total at least $120.0 billion in 2020 and at least $131.9 billion in 2021.  China’s imports of U.S. agricultural products, such as soybeans, cotton, grains, meats, ethanol, seafood, and the full range of other agricultural products will total at least $80 billion over the next two years. China will also strive to purchase an additional $5 billion of agricultural products annually.  China’s imports of energy products from the United States, such as liquefied natural gas, crude oil, and metallurgical coal, will total at least $30.1 billion in 2020 and at least $45.5 billion in 2021.  China’s imports of U.S. services, such as financial services, insurance services, cloud services, and travel services, will total at least $99.9 billion in 2020 and at least $112.2 billion in 2021. The United States and China expect China’s increased imports of U.S. goods and services to continue on this same trajectory for several years after 2021. Anyone wonder why the tariffs were installed (bargaining chip to keep them at their word and likely to be lowered as they met the milestones in this agreement) and never removed, can look to China not owning up to their end of this agreement. But they have a lot of internal issues and a horrible economy. High unemployment.

The Most Politically Absurd Things Americans

Let’s face it, there was more than enough stupid to go around this year. If 2024 taught us anything, it’s that there is no bottom in matters of the politically absurd. Remember, somebody thought it was a good idea for Joe Biden to debate Donald Trump. Fani Willis thought her deadbeat paramour Nathan Wade was worth every dime. And Kristi Noem believed her Old Yeller moment would be endearing. But then again someone in the Trump transition team thought the dog-killing South Dakota governor and close personal friend of Corey Lewandowski would make a fine Homeland Security secretary, so clearly there’s no accounting for taste.

The vicious murder of a woman via immolation on the F train — allegedly by an illegal migrant — has brought New York’s total subway murders to match 2022’s 25-year high, with 10 for the year so far. That’s terrifying, but seemingly the new normal. So how does our fearless leader in Albany, Gov. Hochul, react?Well, on Sunday — the very day of the horrific arson-murder — she opted to brag about her supposed progress in reducing subway crime. “In March, I took action to make our subways safer for the millions of people who take the trains each day,” she tweeted. Now, “crime is going down, and ridership is going up.”

According to Walter Russell Mead’s recent analysis, “One way to read Trump’s second victory in three elections is that the movement for a post-American America with a successor ideology and post-Judeo Christian cultural and ethical foundation aimed at fundamentally changing American society has reached its sell-by date.” Do not hold your breath. The demise of “Woke” has been greatly exaggerated. The unfortunate truth is that the Woke Era, under which the great mass of Americans has been harassed since the reelection of Barack Obama, is merely the latest spasm of the puritanism that has periodically plagued the body politic since the English Civil War.

Russia scrambled to shoot down claims that exiled dictator Bashar al-Assad’s London-born wife Asma filed for divorce and wants to leave with her children to the UK. Turkish media dropped a bombshell report on Saturday that Asma al-Assad, 49, was fed up with her asylum in Russia and wanted to build a new life in London. The report claimed she filed for divorce just two weeks after her family fled Syria ahead of a rebel advance into Damascus. The report suggested Asma was fed up with Russian restrictions that confine her and her three children to the city of Moscow, and that she wanted access to top-quality treatment as she fights leukemia.

An unexpected development following President-elect Trump’s electoral victory last month is the uncharacteristic calm from the normally fire-breathing Democrats who got trounced by the man they swore was Hitler incarnate. Amazon — founded by Jeff Bezos — and billionaire Mark Zuckerberg’s Meta just donated $1 million each for Trump to have an inauguration party and … nothing. Not a sound from scores of workers at either company who would typically resign, write open letters denouncing their employer, or otherwise whine anonymously to the New York Times or Bezos’ own newspaper, the Washington Post. That’s pretty much been the case nationwide, too.

The United States Postal Service is bleeding red ink. America’s mail carrier lost an astounding $9.5 billion in fiscal 2024 and expects to lose an additional $60 billion to $70 billion by 2030. It certainly hasn’t helped that the agency is spending $9.6 billion on a vehicle procurement plan that includes 66,000 electric vehicles. These vehicles are two to three times more expensive than their conventional counterparts, but that has somehow not deterred the USPS. Agency leadership has even convinced Congress to spend $3 billion of taxpayer money on this nonsensical “deal.”

That startlingly high figure of 15,000 trans-identifying troops has been pushed, without sourcing, by major news outlets including the London Times, Military.com, and Newsweek. Rachel Branaman, a spokeswoman for the pro-LGBTQ Modern Military Association of America, used the number to suggest that any future Trump administration action to remove these troops would imperil the country’s war-fighting ability
