Republicans are celebrating this week and Democrats are going through various stages of despair and disbelief, wondering what to do next. Over at the NY Times, Ezra Klein has a reminder which seems written for an audience of dejected Democrats but which is probably something Republicans should think about as well.
There are really two messages, the first one is that the Obama coalition is dead and won't be coming back. Whatever glue once held that group of progressives and minorities together just blew up. Instead of a black candidate winning as Obama did in 2008, we had a black candidate losing. Instead of uniform rallying together

SPRINGFIELD, Ill. — A federal judge on Friday overturned Illinois’ ban on semiautomatic weapons, leaning on recent U.S. Supreme Court rulings that strictly interpret the Second Amendment right to keep and bear firearms.
U.S. District Judge Stephen P. McGlynn, of the Southern District of Illinois, issued a permanent injunction he said applies universally, not just to the lawsuit’s plaintiffs. He decided, however, that the injunction would not take effect for 30 days.
Illinois Attorney General Kwame Raoul responded speedily, filing a notice of appeal Friday evening.
The Protect Illinois Communities Act, signed into law in January 2023 by Democratic Gov. J.B. Pritzker, took effect Jan. 1. It bans AR-15 rifles and similar guns,

With President Donald Trump's big win on Tuesday, there's a lot of talk now about a mandate from the people.
He so decisively beat Kamala Harris, you don't even hear them talking at this point about any means of contesting the election. It remains to be seen if they try any funny business between now and Jan. 20, 2025. But the American people made the saying "too big to rig" come true with how big the win was.
It defied the ridiculous estimations by things like the Selzer poll that suggested Trump was going to lose Iowa. But not only

Hours after former President Donald Trump was declared the winner of the 2024 election, the Biden administration moved Wednesday to limit oil drilling in Alaska’s Arctic National Wildlife Refuge.
Oil drilling had been banned for decades in the Arctic refuge — a pristine natural region in northeast Alaska home to a wide range of threatened species. But a law passed during the first Trump administration required the federal government to hold two lease sales there for fossil fuel drilling. The first was in 2021 and was ultimately suspended and canceled by the Interior Department because of the lack of interest from the oil industry.

Federal lawfare is indeed winding down, as we discussed earlier this week.
Judge Tanya Chutkan, the Obama appointee who is presiding over the 2020 election interference case against President-elect Trump, issued a brief order on the docket today, vacating all proceedings scheduled in the case, including any briefing on pending issues. She ordered that on or before December 2, 2024, Biden-Harris DOJ special counsel Jack Smith must file “a status report indicating [the government’s] proposed course for this case going forward.”
The course for the case is to dismiss it

Tech tycoon Elon Musk joined a call between US President-elect Donald Trump and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky the day after the presidential election, according to a source with knowledge of the situation.
The source spoke to CNN on the condition of anonymity due to the sensitivity of the conversation.
Zelensky previously said on X that he called Trump on Wednesday and congratulated him on “his historic landslide” win. “We agreed to maintain close dialogue and advance our cooperation. Strong and unwavering US leadership is vital for the world and for a just peace,” Zelensky wrote at the time.

Well ... perhaps a few, but so far they seem to be mainly in the Democrat wilderness. One person who nails the problem -- and even part of the solution -- is Julie Roginsky, a Democrat strategist and CNN contributor. Immediately after Joe Biden's valediction at the White House. CNN anchor Pamela Brown tried to throw it to Roginsky by framing Biden's speech as a way to defend himself from finger-pointing over his decision to run for a second term.
Roginsky rejected the premise, and indeed that any one person in the Democrat Party should get the blame for the electoral disaster. The whole party has gone off the rails,

Another crushing defeat at the hands of Donald Trump has most Democrats reflecting on “why?” instead of contemplating “what now?” The electoral limits of a purely anti-Trump campaign have been exhausted, and Democrats ought to begin laying the groundwork for a new political identity if they wish to remain competitive on the national stage moving forward. Their path only gets harder. Much harder.
According to the American Redistricting Project’s 2030 census projections, Republican-leaning states are set to gain 13 Electoral College votes while Democratic states are slated to lose twelve (setting Pennsylvania, −1, aside as a truly purple one). Places like Texas (+4) and Florida (+3) are experiencing population surges

A federal judge has struck down a Biden administration program for illegal aliens who are married to US citizens. In a three-paragraph decision, Federal District Judge for the Eastern District of Texas J. Campbell Barker (a Trump appointee, and yes, that does make a difference) ruled that the program the administration rolled out in June 2024 "lack statuary authority under 8 U. S. C. § 11821(d)(5)(A) itself (as opposed to under other provisions modifying or supplementing that authority) to grant parole "in place" to aliens" under the benign-sounding "Keeping Families Together" program.
The "Keeping Families Program" was challenged by Texas and a coalition of 15 other states soon after its announcement,

Failed Democratic presidential candidate Kamala Harris lost running mate Tim Walz’s home county in rural Minnesota to Donald Trump, a defeat that will intensify criticism of her decision to run alongside Minnesota’s progressive governor.
Trump won Minnesota’s Blue Earth County 49.6 percent to 48.3 percent, a 5.7 percent shift rightward from four years ago, despite Walz having lived there for two decades and launching his political career in the area.
Overall, Harris won Minnesota 51.1 percent to 46.8 percent, an underwhelming performance in a state that gave President Joe Biden 52.4 percent of the vote four years ago compared to Trump’s 45.3 percent. By the time Minnesota was called

Multiple outlets are reporting that anti-Israel mobs are chasing down Israelis and savagely beating them on the streets of Amsterdam Thursday following a soccer game between Maccabi Tel Aviv FC and Amsterdam's Ajax.
As of this writing, dozens of extremely disturbing videos are being posted to X depicting violent beatings as individuals are surrounded and then pummeled.
It’s ugly:
Danny Danon, the Israeli ambassador to the United Nations, gave an exclusive statement to Fox News Digital on Thursday night.
"We are seeing a pogrom against Jews and Israelis unfold in Amsterdam," Danon said. "In 2024. This must stop. ‘Globalize the intifada’ was not just a slogan

Virginia governor Glenn Youngkin has told President-elect Donald Trump he will serve out the rest of his term as governor and will not take a role in Trump’s administration, the Virginia outlet 12 On Your Side WWBT Richmond reported Thursday afternoon. In the interview, the Republican governor did not rule out serving in the administration after his term ends in January 2026.
“We’ve been working closely over the course of this entire campaign, and I am so excited that his hard work paid off, and he knows that I am committed and will continue to serve as governor through my full term, and that is so important,”
