A sudden new twist in the investigation into Hunter Biden means his legal tribulations will likely stretch on for months, creating an unwelcome new drag on his father’s White House and reelection bid.
Just weeks ago, the shadow of criminal suspicion over Hunter Biden seemed about to lift. But the elevation of David Weiss, the prosecutor investigating President Joe Biden’s son, to special counsel status on Friday was as important for symbolic and political reasons as it was for legal ones. The new status grants him extra powers to broaden his inquiries – potentially into other states beyond his current patch as US attorney in Delaware.

Progressives in Ohio wasted no time moving to change the state’s constitution and take away qualified immunity from police after a failed push by Republicans to make it harder to alter the state's guiding document.
Shortly after Ohio voters rejected a ballot measure that would have raised the threshold to amend the state constitution from 50% plus one vote to 60% of the vote, the Ohio Coalition to End Qualified Immunity submitted a petition to end qualified immunity for state workers, including the police, the Toledo Blade reported.

Ronna McDaniel saw the writing on the wall — Donald Trump, the most popular Republican candidate in history (by far), refuses to quit in spite of the endless legal and political witch hunts — and something had to be done.
So Mitt Romney's niece threw a hail Mary, and back in February, McDaniel mulled the idea of a "loyalty pledge" before promptly instituting it. Here's what she had to say at the time about the tactic, during a chummy conversation with CNN's Dana Bash, via Politico:

‘You know, if you let me write $200 billion worth of hot checks every year, I could give you an illusion of prosperity, too.”
That was then-Democratic Sen. Lloyd Bentsen back in 1988 arguing that the Reagan boom was a myth because it was bought and paid for with deficit spending, then running about $200 billion a year.
What would Bentsen say today about an economy that – instead of blasting ahead at more than 4% a year at it was in 1988 – is barely eking out gains and appears headed to a downturn …

It’s the economy, stupid.
For decades, that’s been seen as a sound political strategy behind every effective presidential campaign.
Focus on the economy and people’s pocketbooks — and get some good luck in terms of how the economy is actually running when you run for office — and voila: You get elected to the White House, and you win reelection.
The question a growing number of Democrats are asking, however, is whether that’s still the case, as President Biden deals with stronger economic numbers but low approval ratings.

Fox News shut Tucker Carlson down right before his show was to have aired an interview with former Capitol Police Chief Steven Sund. Yesterday, Tucker released a new interview he did with Sund, and it confirms everything you’ve suspected: The Capitol Police were kept in the dark about possible problems on January 6 and, when problems finally occurred, they were consistently denied timely aid. In other words, it was a set-up. (And I have an even darker take on events than Sund does.)The interview is almost an hour long but, if you have the time, I recommend watching it. As of now, House Republicans have removed funds from the FY 2024 budget for the controversial $3.5 billion proposed relocation of the FBI’s Washington, D.C. headquarters to a new complex at one of three locations in the D.C. suburbs of Virginia or Maryland.
Some House Republicans want to keep the FBI headquarters at its current location and view the relocation proposal as unwise and wasteful. Others want to downsize, defund or eliminate the Bureau – and not to reward it with a sprawling new headquarters complex – because they believe it has been weaponized against conservatives.

Top House Republicans are accusing the Biden administration of attempting to stymie their investigation into Hunter Biden following the Department of Justice’s appointment of a special counsel.
Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-Calif.) raised doubts about whether special counsel David Weiss could be trusted and pledged in a statement that House Republicans would continue their investigations into the president’s family.
“This action by Biden’s DOJ cannot be used to obstruct congressional investigations or whitewash the Biden family corruption,” McCarthy said on X, the platform formerly known as Twitter.

Republican officials blasted the Biden administration for “bowing to the Ayatollah” and “endangering” Americans, after it struck a deal with the Iranian regime to transfer five Iranian-Americans from prison to house arrest in exchange for billions in unfrozen assets.
On Thursday, the Biden administration’s deal with Tehran to unfreeze $6 billion in Iranian financial assets and release a “handful” of Iranian nationals jailed for violating U.S. sanctions in exchange for five Americans taken prisoner by Iran on highly dubious charges of espionage, came to light.

Attorney General Merrick Garland’s appointment of U.S. Attorney David Weiss of Delaware as Special Counsel to investigate Hunter Biden contradicts federal regulations requiring that a special counsel be chosen from outside the government.
However, it would not be the first time that an Attorney General had ignored those regulations. In 2003, U.S. Attorney Patrick Fitzgerald was appointed as Special Counsel in the Valerie Plame affair. He was appointed by Deputy Attorney General James Comey, who would later depart from procedure and regulations in announcing that Hillary Clinton would not be prosecuted.

Hawaii had the world's fanciest natural disaster warning system on the planet. It also had an ongoing firebug problem, and recent academic study warning that the place was very vulnerable to fire catastrophes.
Somehow, none of that figured in the government's fire plan. The firebug is still out there. The conditions created for big fires, such as the proliferation of non-native grasses, remain on Maui. And the fancy emergency warning system somehow didn't work.

The summer of 2020 was a watershed in American life. After George Floyd’s death in police custody and the ensuing season of rioting, major institutions—from federal agencies to Fortune 100 companies—hastily pledged themselves to the narrative of critical race theory, which holds that America is a fundamentally racist nation and that public and private entities should practice “antiracist discrimination” to equalize group outcomes—a state of affairs that its advocates call “racial equity.”
This ideology stands in direct opposition to the principles of the Constitution, which provides for color-blind equality under law.

Robert Gover wrote the cult classic One Hundred Dollar Misunderstanding. It might have been cutting-edge in 1962, when it was published, but not for long. Insofar as my subject here is related to President Biden, I can note that Hunter Biden’s misadventures have taken reality far beyond Gover’s satire.
However, I have found Gover’s title an irresistible source of headlines for comments on the news. Today comes word via the New York Times that the Biden administration has entered into a $6 billion arrangement with Iran for the return of five imprisoned Americans. Fox News has posted an accessible story on the arrangement here.
That’s quite an increase over the $400 million

Brett Baier is not qualified to moderate the Republican debate on August 23 in Milwaukee. Mr. Baier had a much-publicised interview with President Trump a month ago. This interview amply demonstrated Baier’s antipathy towards the President. Most of the time he appeared to be cordial towards the President, however, when Trump brought up the topic of the stolen election, Baier became abusively hostile and interrupted his guest incessantly and would not let the President talk.
Right after the election the charges of fraud surfaced, and at every opportunity, the Republicans were asked by the media and Democrats if the election was stolen

I am ashamed to acknowledge that, as a teenager, I read “Letter to a Christian Nation” — an anti-religion treatise on the virtues of atheism — and found myself impressed with Sam Harris’ intellectual prowess. How naïve I was, as we all were at that age.
Appearing on the podcast “Impact Theory,” this is what the esteemed Sam Harris had to say about vaccine mandates:
"Dial up the deadliness of the pathogen, you know, give us something like, you know, airborne ebola that incubates for a month, you know, you don’t know you have it, and you walk around spreading it, and it’s got, you know, a 75% fatality rate,

Lawyers representing Maryland’s largest school district recently argued in court that opt-out policies that ‘allow’ parents to exempt their kids from gender and sexuality lessons undermine “specific goals the district is trying to advance.”
Incredibly, coming as it did from lawyers representing the government, that statement is unquestionably accurate, although not in the way that the schools would like us to believe.
The Montgomery County Public School District recently reversed its original opt-out policy that ‘gave’ parents (and their kids) the right to refuse lessons they considered inappropriate or at odds with their religious views.

We see that congressional Republicans’ constipation has flared up again. It’s a chronic, though voluntary, distress. Joe Biden, Merrick Garland, and Alejandro Mayorkas are begging to be impeached, yet Speaker Kevin McCarthy and other bunged-up House Republicans refuse to extrude. It’s time to -- well, you know what -- or get off the flippin’ pot. True justice -- unfashionable among most “progressives” -- demands action. And politics -- a dirty word to dainty Republicans -- also demands action.
Let’s set aside the sinister Merrick Garland and the plodding, lying apparatchik Alejandro Mayorkas. They can be impeached another day.

Progressives have succeeded in draining all semblance of common sense and morality from the Democrat Party. They have also been hammering away at free speech for decades, using college campuses as havens for restrictive speech codes to turn three generations of faculty into critical race pedagogues and their students into ideological neurotics. What emerged as an annoying political correctness in the late twentieth century has blossomed into a full-blown assault on all five rights of the First Amendment.
Higher education now seems adrift of its moorings and without a moral compass to bring it back.

We’ve recently written quite a bit about electric vehicles’ many flaws – the reasons to hate them, their evil nature, the entire EV con. But they’re not the only green plaything that’s being exposed for the debacle they are. Windmills are just as troubled.
“All over the world, rural people are reacting with fury at the encroachment of large wind and solar projects on their homes and neighborhoods,” writes energy author Robert Bryce.
Last month, “thousands of Druze residents in the Golan Heights,” says Bryce, “rioted to stop the installation of a large wind project on their traditional lands.” Before that,
