Tony Bennett, one of the most beloved and recognizable voices in the history of American popular music, died Friday at 96, less than two weeks shy of his birthday, his publicist said in a statement.
Bennett died in his hometown of New York, Sylvia Weiner said. A cause was not immediately disclosed. Bennett provided the soundtrack for generations of romantic evenings and proved that his timeless brand of standards could have broad, consistent appeal as the music industry shifted with the rise of rock and rap.
They don't make 'em like they used to. Pop music today is vulgar.

I saw Tony Bennett in concert in 2001, at Fiddler’s Green outside of Denver. Diana Krall opened for him. From the moment he took the stage, he was a master showman. About two-thirds of the way through his act, he brought Diana Krall back out; she played the piano while they sang duets. It was a night I’ll never forget.
RIP, Tony. You were a hell of a guy.

God bless Tony Bennett. He was one of the greatest singing voices of our time. I remember in the 'Seventies when he cut an album with jazz piano legend Bill Evans, he did the artwork on the cover of the album, and signed the art "Anthony Benedetto." Somewhere I read that Tony Bennett was left of center politically. He was, but I don't remember him being strident about it. What was important about him was that he was a great singer and a nice human being. That's a good way to be.

The most thrilling thing I have ever seen in show business was, sitting in the top balcony at Radio City Music Hall, Tony turned the mic off, and just with his guitarist, sang “Fly Me To The Moon..”
Rest easy, Sir, and thank you…

I believe Tony was a bit on the Left politically, but unlike other Lefties, he was actually talented and entertaining. RIP and thank you for your beautiful voice and music.

God rest his soul. Tony Bennett was a giant — with a remarkable talent, smooth voice and great style that was timeless. There's a reason they're called "standards:" appealing and meaningful songs that will always be celebrated and remembered when interpreted and performed by absolute masters of their craft. I will be spending the rest of the day with Tony Bennett, along with Count Basie and Duke Ellington. Requiescat in pace, old friend.

Tony was criticized out here at the time for opposing the Iraq War. Our apologies, sir. You were correct.
I wonder what his thoughts on 2023 San Francisco were.
RIP.

I can’t overlook his politics and have no use for his music. It’s good to see others here are not as petty as I am, but just imagine if Hillary had been elected in 2016.

RIP Tony Bennett.
You may have left your heart in San Francisco, but the SF you sang about no longer exists. Today's version would be I Lost My MInd in San Francisco.

Excellent singers aren't always fans of their country, but it's ill form to speak badly of those who past.

Sad. Rest in Peace, Tony. Your voice is still in the room here. Next to Blue Eyes, Frank Sinatra, and the boss of the room, Elvis.

I thought I had read he retired because he contracted Alzheimer's? Could be wrong, but he admitted in an interview shortly before his retirement he was having some pretty serious memory issues while on stage.
As I also recall, he got a serious resurgence in his career because he appeared on MTV: Unplugged and after that the younger crowd could not get enough of his jazz style. RIP Mr. Bennett your body may be silent but your voice will live as long as there is music.

I heard on the radio today that Bennett had his first #1 chart song in 1951. Yikes, I was barely here then, and had his last #1 on the charts in 2021, 80 years later. That is absolutely amazing.

He was the last of them. The great singers of the Great American Songbook are all gone now.
Hazy's already mentioned the Tony Bennett/Bill Evans Album -- two musical master craftsman bringing songs to life. I owned it on CD in the '80s. I recently bought it again in digital form, hoping to hear it one more time before Mr. Bennett left us.
He left us so much.
