Nordstrom will close both of its downtown San Francisco stores in the coming months, citing the "dynamics" of the downtown market as the region continues to see a rash of retail thefts by brazen thieves. In a memo to employees, Chief Stores Officer Jamie Nordstrom said the company will not renew its lease for its San Francisco Centre Nordstrom store and the Market Street Rack store across the street. "We’ve spent more than 35 years serving customers in downtown San Francisco, building relationships with them and investing in the local community," the message said. "But as many of you know

CHICAGO — U.S. cities already struggling to shelter thousands of migrants are calling for federal help and an end to Republican political gamesmanship over immigration, concerned that an expected increase in the number of people entering the country when pandemic-era asylum restrictions end on the U.S.-Mexico border May 11 will further strain their budgets and resources. Chicago has long pledged to welcome migrants. But a tenfold increase in recent days has taxed resources. Migrants awaiting beds in city-run shelters are sleeping on floors in police stations and in airports surrounded by suitcases. They’re depending on donors for food, medicine and

3M is laying off 1,100 employees from its corporate headquarters in Maplewood, Minnesota. In a WARN notice to the Minnesota Department of Employment and Economic Development, 3M said the permanent job cuts will begin on June 30. The headline figure of 1,100 employees is more than the 600 the company told Bring Me The News it would be laying off at its HQ in a statement on April 25. A spokesperson told us Tuesday the 1,100 employees include the 600 previously mentioned, with the additional 500 identified as remote workers who work for the Minnesota headquarters but are not physically

Think Biden administration regulators have it in for gas stoves? Just wait until you learn what they have in store for air conditioners. In fact, many homeowners are already finding out first hand. It’s all part of team Biden’s prioritization of climate change policy over the interests of consumers. Now that air conditioning season is commencing across most of America, nearly 100 million homeowners are turning on their systems for the first time since last summer, hoping they get cold air. Those that don’t will need repairs, which may require replacing refrigerant that has leaked out of the system. Unfortunately

For the past year or so, Hunter Biden’s lawyers have spent the bulk of their billable hours responding to the Department of Justice’s investigation into their client’s questionable business dealings. But on Monday, the president’s son headed to Arkansas after he was ordered to appear in court for a contempt hearing in his paternity case. According to court filings, Lunden Roberts, the mother of Biden’s 4-year-old estranged daughter, wants Biden to be held in contempt and placed in jail for allegedly withholding evidence in the paternity suit. In 2019, a DNA test confirmed that Biden was the father of the

SEATTLE -- Washington Gov. Jay Inlsee, a Democrat who sought to make the state a leader on progressive policies from climate change to gun violence prevention, said Monday he will not seek a fourth term in office. The 72-year-old's announcement clears the way for younger members of the party to run, most notably Attorney General Bob Ferguson, who gained a national profile by challenging the travel ban and other policies of former President Donald Trump. “As governor, I have seen my role as inspiring our state ever forward and ever higher," Inslee said. “I’m gratified to be able to say

Chicago Mayor Lori Lightfoot is urging Texas Gov. Greg Abbott to not follow through with his "inhuman and dangerous" plan to send more migrants and asylum seekers from his southern state to her city. The outgoing Chicago mayor made her appeal to the Republican governor in a letter Sunday, stating that they are aware Texas is planning as soon as Monday to start sending migrants to Democrat-led cities including Chicago. (Snip) "We simply have no more shelters, spaces or resources to accommodate an increase of individuals at this level, with little coordination or care, that does not pose a risk

Before his death in 1964, Ian Fleming wrote 14 books about James Bond, and the literary franchise, just like 007 himself, has proved unkillable. Writers from Kingsley Amis to Anthony Horowitz have taken up the mantle and produced Bond novels. But we’ve had to wait until now, with Kim Sherwood’s new novel “Double or Nothing,” for the Fleming estate to pass the baton to a woman. Although it would be misleading to say that this latest Bond novel is actually about Bond. More than an addition to the canon, “Double or Nothing” is an expansion of the universe, and an

DENVER – Your lawn may be the next climate change battleground. And parks. And playgrounds. Regulators and clean-air advocates are increasingly eyeing the pollution emitted by small gasoline engines used to power lawn mowers and leaf blowers as they seek to blunt climate change. Advocates say using a commercial gas leaf blower for an hour produces emissions equal to driving from Denver to Los Angeles. Among cities and states with bans or limits: California; Burlington, Vermont; Vancouver, Canada; and Washington, D.C. While many critics first attacked the small engines for the noise they make, experts say these small, two-stroke engines release

Egypt has accused Netflix of misrepresenting history by casting a Black woman to play Cleopatra, its most famous historical figure, in a new series. “Queen Cleopatra,” which is released May 10, features Adele James in the lead role, a casting decision that the streaming giant says is “a nod to the centuries-long conversation about the ruler’s race” but which officials in Cairo have dismissed as “blatant historical fallacy.” The government statement issued Thursday marked an escalation in a feud that has sparked demands for the show's cancellation, amid a broader debate over representation in popular culture. The eight-episode docu-drama is

Protesters smeared black and red paint on the case and pedestal of Edgar Degas’s “Little Dancer Aged Fourteen” sculpture at the National Gallery of Art in D.C. on Thursday to bring attention to the climate crisis and demand that President Biden declare a climate emergency. The protesters — a man and a woman, dressed in black suits — slathered their hands, then crouched down to paint the pedestal on which the ballerina sculpture is displayed. They then stood up and smeared their hands across the clear case protecting the artwork. Police removed the two people in handcuffs and ushered out

PORTLAND, Ore. – Portland is about to be one of the first cities in the U.S. with blocks dedicated as a zero-emission delivery zone, thanks to a $2 million grant the city received. The Portland Bureau of Transportation announced Tuesday that the money will support creating a 16-block area in downtown where all deliveries must be made using zero-emission vehicles. These vehicles can include electric vans and trucks, cargo bikes or hydrogen-fueled vehicles. The goal is to reduce traffic from heavy trucks in the downtown area. According to PBOT, the pilot program of the zero-emission delivery zone will be located near
