Not the German government, which continues on a collision course with reality. But Germans have figured out that the green dream is turning into a nightmare. This report is on a survey of Germans done by forsa: An overwhelming majority of the German population is of the opinion that a successful energy transition is not realistic. According to a Forsa survey, 88 percent of respondents share this view. 88 percent! That is stunning.

On Good Friday, I chanced across a photograph of the lower Manhattan skyline at night from Good Friday in April 1956. Three skyscrapers, dominating the space, feature certain windows illuminated to form gigantic crosses to commemorate that most solemn of Christian holidays. The year 1956 was not that long ago. But how much has changed in those 60-odd years! Can you imagine such a public display of Christian affirmation in New York today? Nor can I. That was then. Now things are different. I thought about that disjunction between then and now when reading through Washington’s Farewell Address this weekend.

Melania Trump on Sunday broke her silence for the first time since her husband’s indictment and arrest, while hubby Donald delivered a blistering message to critics. “Happy Easter!” the former first lady tweeted above a photo of a pink rose, the first time she has posted something online since the Manhattan criminal firestorm engulfing her husband took off. Melania was notably even absent from her husband’s post-arraignment speech at their Mar-a-Lago estate in Florida last week. At Mar-a-Lago Tuesday night, Trump made his first public comments hours after becoming the first commander-in-chief in US history to be arraigned on criminal charges. “I have a great family and they’ve done a fantastic job

According to NBC News, cyclist Ethan Boyes died on Tuesday after a car struck him while he was cycling in a San Francisco park. The 44-year-old Boyes, whom NBC credited with “multiple world and national track championships,” was ultimately pronounced dead at a hospital. Boyes was a beloved member of the cycling community, as evidenced by the outpouring of grief at his death:

We previously discussed the disgraceful attack on former swimmer Riley Gaines who was reportedly assaulted when she tried to speak about her views on transgender issues at San Francisco State University (SFSU). Gaines had to be removed to a locked room for hours by police for her own protection. It is now clear why students believed that they had license to engage in such disruptions. SFSU has issued a statement that was conspicuous in its failure to condemn the mob or promise accountability for these actions.

PROLOGUE: THE INFORMATION WAR In 1950, Sen. Joseph McCarthy claimed that he had proof of a communist spy ring operating inside the government. Overnight, the explosive accusations blew up in the national press, but the details kept changing. Initially, McCarthy said he had a list with the names of 205 communists in the State Department; the next day he revised it to 57. Since he kept the list a secret, the inconsistencies were beside the point. The point was the power of the accusation, which made McCarthy’s name synonymous with the politics of the era.

Nobel Laureate Albert Camus once said, “Insurrection is certainly not the sum total of human experience but … it is our historic reality.” Those words came to mind this week when Tennessee’s House of Representatives expelled two members accused of disrupting legislative proceedings in what some called an “insurrection” or a “mutiny.” The scene on the floor of the Tennessee House perfectly captured our “age of rage.” Protesters filled the capitol building to protest the failure to pass gun-control legislation. However, they were in the minority in both the state and its legislature.
