Is our democracy at risk? On our present track, will the U.S. be able to sustain a functioning democracy?
A recent article evaluating why the much-anticipated "Red Wave" in the mid-term elections never materialized suggested that Republicans need to offer a program that will appeal to voters — especially young voters — who want the government to do more for them. The author claimed that the old Reaganite slogan that "government is the problem" won't work anymore.(Snip) But rather than a "conservative" program of more government services, what Republicans need to offer — and it's a lot more work — is a re-education in the great American virtues

Does this author Ho early believe honest elections are still a thing. Can he produce any evidence for this?

When any author starts our with "The state of our democracy" and asks if we can continue to be a "functioning democracy".....I just cringe at their massive, embarrassing ignorance of the extreme basics of even the DEFINTIONS of the words that they are using and I just stop reading.

Never did anybody suspect that the MATRIX would be connected by their thumbs. Young indeed.
The Republic of Texas approaches.
Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Nebraska, S Dakota, N Dakota, Montana, Alberta (Canada), Saskatchewan (Canada), Manitoba (Canada), and a few states along the sides. Let's go EAST. Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida.
We have every shipping port in The Gulf of Mexico and half the Atlantic and more oil than the Saudis ever dreamed of.
California and New York can print their own money. If they want to trade they can use Panama. We WILL protect our borders ,north, south, east, and west.
If you're coming to visit Texas bring your US passport with the pre-approved visitor's visa.

I don't think the 2022 election results were because of a lack of a message. What more of a message does one need than what Biteme and the demosluts had done to the country prior to the election. I think it was people are just fed up with the current politics and basically don't believe their vote would matter one way or the other. It's not messaging that's the problem. It's uniparty collaboration that's the problem.

The author’s mistake - judging from comments here - appears to have been beginning with the very questionable premise of another article, which he went on to refute.
It is a very good article. I sincerely suggest reading all of it. I think most of us would agree with him.
Article ending:
“Virtue and liberty are closely connected; only a virtuous citizenry can maintain its freedom. If citizens do not value self-reliance, hard work, and fair play, a democracy descends into a bidding war for the citizens' comfort, as history demonstrates in the fall of the Roman republic. Free bread! More circuses!
The problem with a "conservative" program of federal spending is that it doesn't call the American people to anything higher. It simply promises to satisfy their needs in a more efficient manner than the Democrats. It's an expanding welfare state on the cheap.”

Re-education camps...there's an idea we can all get behind. There is one national dogma and everyone will comply. On board for that?
FTA: "Republicans need to offer a program that will appeal to voters — especially young voters — who want the government to do more for them. The author claimed that the old Reaganite slogan that 'government is the problem' won't work anymore."
Well, the author does not name the writer of the excerpted article. Whoever it was is absolutely right in his analysis, except substitute "Conservative" for "Republican". Those who think and offer possible solutions are derided as RINOs, and have been at least since the days of Jack Kemp. Thought and advocating change in inimical to conservatism. Rollback and tradition is their preferred program, and it doesn't sell to the young electorate steeped in the ideas of progressivism, however defined.
BTW: We are indeed a democracy by any common-use definition. We vote for our representatives and operatives in government. It is clear from the comments posted that the honesty of our vote is a raging subject here. Indeed, we are not a direct democracy, electing representatives, but a democracy nonetheless. So, pick up a dictionary and let's pass on the amateur political science hair-splitting.
