There's been a lot of talk among Republicans about the effect a big primary field might have on the 2024 presidential nomination race. The short version is that a big field is thought to benefit former President Donald Trump, who, as in 2016, would not have to win a majority of votes to win — a plurality, and not even a big one, would be enough. On the other hand, a small field, especially a one-on-one matchup with another candidate, say Gov. Ron DeSantis (R-FL), might allow the challenger to defeat Trump. Given that, there are Republican activists in the early voting states who are trying to keep the field small.

Tuesday's State of the Union address sure has gotten attention for the ways in which some Republican members reacted to President Joe Biden's lies, but among the chatter, it's worth wondering if people actually tuned in for the address? Not really, it turns out, given that just 27.3 million people watched, according to data from Nielsen across 16 networks. That's a decline of 29 percent, as is mentioned in Deadline's headline. The Hill mentioned in their headline that the ratings took "a nosedive."
Those ratings look even worse when compared to previous years, and the lack of viewers in the demographics that Biden needs support from. As Deadline mentioned:

Joe Biden is running for president again and his second State of the Union address was his campaign manifesto headlined by the notion of "finish the job" as his rallying cry.
Most Americans today, however, want Biden to finish up his job and move over for someone else. Clearly, this president has no intention of backing down from an all-out effort to stay in office even as polls show a majority of Democrats want him to stick to one term.

Sen. Steve Daines (R-MT) posted a photo on Twitter of a Montana antelope killed on a hunting trip with his wife, Cindy. The two pose with the elk in the picture, dressed in hunting clothes. His account was suspended on Monday night and the reason given was that the image violated the Twitter Terms of Service. How did Daines react to the news? He said, “My wife is a great shot. What can I say?”The hashtag #FreeSteveDaines was created. Some other elected officials weighed in on behalf of their friend and colleague, including Senator Ted Cruz.
On Friday, Pierre Rutledge, chair of the Black Affairs Advisory Board, issued an apology to Governor DeSantis. Days before, a member of the volunteer board called DeSantis “racist” because the governor rejected an African-American history Advanced Placement course. The College Board removed parts of the course last Wednesday that was opposed by DeSantis. The course will be reevaluated by the Florida Department of Education.DeSantis supported the Department of Education’s decision to remove the history course, because he said it pushed a political agenda.
“This course on Black history, what’s one of the lessons about? Queer theory,” DeSantis said.

The environmental disaster taking place in Ohio from a Norfolk Southern derailed train should outrage both sides of the political aisle. Chris Cuomo, the former host of Cuomo Prime Time on CNN, claims he was so devastated after his firing that he was “going to kill everybody and myself.”
Cuomo was fired back in 2021 when CNN had to pretend that it cared about journalistic standards in the wake of revelations that Cuomo was giving advice to his brother Andrew Cuomo, the disgraced former governor of New York, who’d been accused of sexual harassment by a number of staffers.

A Georgia State Senator referred to Justice Clarence Thomas, the second black man to serve on the United States Supreme Court, by the racial slur “Uncle Tom” this week, presumably over his conservative leanings.
The racist comment occurred on Tuesday as the Georgia State Senate voted 32-20 along party lines to create a statue on Capitol grounds dedicated to Justice Clarence Thomas, a native of the Peach State.
