New York City is converting the world’s tallest Holiday Inn hotel into the Big Apple’s sixth mega-shelter for its surging migrant population, Mayor Eric Adams announced Tuesday. The deal will supply 492 rooms for adult families and single women, Adams said in a statement. “With more than 44,000 asylum seekers arriving in the last 10 months alone, we have helped provide shelter and support to nearly as many asylum seekers as the number of New Yorkers we already had in our shelter system when we first came into office,” he said. Terms of the contract weren’t announced, but The Post

NEW YORK — The Internal Revenue Service is recommending that taxpayers hold off on filing their tax returns for 2022 if they received a special tax refund or payment from their state last year. Last year, 19 states offered diverse programs that offered inflation relief payments or refunds for taxpayers. The IRS issued the guidance Friday due to the agency’s uncertainty about the taxability of the payments. (Snip) For residents from states such as California and Illinois, the agency is recommending that they hold off on filing their tax returns until they receive further instruction from the IRS. If you

The Aldi store in north Minneapolis is closing next week, leaving the wider Northside community with just one large grocery store. The store, located at 3120 Penn Ave. N., will have its final day on Feb. 12. An Aldi spokesperson blamed the closure on "the inability to renovate the store to accommodate our larger product range and our current lease term expiring." It will leave north Minneapolis with just one large grocery chain, Cub Foods at 701 W. Broadway Ave., and independent options such as So Low Grocery Outlet at 3111 Emerson Ave. N., and North Market at 4414 Humboldt

By now, almost everyone knows it: Vice President Kamala Harris is a horrible politician, would be an embarrassing presidential nominee, and would not be a good president. The New York Times has a long piece on how this realization is spreading through Democratic circles. At times, the reporters try to soften the blow, but the judgment of Democratic insiders is unavoidable. (Tweet) Quin Hillyer lays out concisely why Harris is so unpopular. She cackles menacingly or awkwardly at totally inappropriate times. And when she speaks, she gives off the impression of a child who forgot to prepare for his school

AMC Theatres has introduced a new pricing program, offering cheaper seats for movie fans who don't mind sitting in the front row, in the latest attempt to increase attendance and profits after the COVID-19 pandemic. The U.S.' biggest cinema circuit on Monday said its new pricing initiative, called "Sightline," will be expanded to all its domestic locations by year end, including dine-in cinemas, after having already rolled out at some AMC theaters. (Snip) Those who want the best seats will have to pay a premium. "Preferred" seats — typically in the middle of the auditorium — will cost more than the standard

NBC anchor Chuck Todd seemingly can’t wrap his head around the fact that President Biden's accomplishments in office aren't resonating with the American public. In an interview on NBC’s "Meet the Press" on Sunday, Todd asked Transportation Secretary Pete Buttigieg why American voters have failed to embrace Biden’s accomplishments in office, telling Buttigieg that despite his unpopularity with the public, Biden has "got a lot of things to tout." "Why do you think it has not penetrated the American public?" he asked. Buttigieg, who regularly appears on left-leaning weekend shows to defend the administration, responded, "Well, these things don’t sell

When Charlene Luo was looking for a condo to buy in 2021, she had two nonnegotiable requirements: one, enough space to host friends for dinner; and two, a gas stove with the capacity to install a powerful range hood. Luo, a data scientist, cooks every day and hosts a supper club from time to time in her Brooklyn apartment. She prefers a gas stove because she cooks with a wok, the deep, sloping pan that is the best vessel for preparing Sichuan dishes. (Snip) California has already passed a law banning the installation of gas stoves in new construction, and

PORT-AU-PRINCE - Haitians desperate for passports to apply for a U.S. migration program crowded local migration centers, according to videos shared on social media on Friday, crushing through small doorways and scaling the outside of stairways. Videos from Haiti's Lalue migration office and an improvised center at a sports facility in the capital Port-au-Prince show people climbing on railings of stairs and being crushed as they fight their way through crowds, clutching document envelopes. The United States said in early January it would allow up to 30,000 people from Haiti, Cuba, Nicaragua and Venezuela to enter by air each month on

A Princeton University student argued in a Sunday night opinion article that the school’s Honor Code unfairly impacts racial minorities, citing parallels to the U.S. criminal justice system. The Ivy League school’s Undergraduate Honor Code lays out standards for student conduct that all undergraduate students must abide by and prohibits students from plagiarizing or cheating, according to its website. Emilly Santos, author of the op-ed and Princeton University student, likened the code to the United States criminal justice system to propose that it “disadvantages” minority students. Gas prices are continuing to rise to start 2023, and experts say prices are "unlikely to turn around any time soon." The current average for a regular gallon of gas $3.50, according to AAA. While it's nowhere near the record $5.01 reached in June, its far more than what the average was heading into New Year's Day and what prices were one year ago. Experts say it's possible the average price reaches $4 later this year. Here's what to know about gas prices heading into February: How much have gas prices risen? Gas prices had a steady decline following a
