A new release of internal Twitter correspondence details the relationship between the social media company and government agencies, which one agent compared to a belly button. The latest drop of the Twitter Files, a series of releases provided by Elon Musk to allies detailing communications of the social media platform's leadership, offers insights into the company's relationship with the FBI. The company established regular communications and received requests from an assortment of agencies, according to emails released by journalist Matt Taibbi. These connections were better formed after the company clashed with the Global Engagement Center, a State Department-funded agency

Walter Cunningham, the last surviving astronaut from the first successful crewed space mission in NASA's Apollo program, died Tuesday in Houston. He was 90. NASA confirmed Cunningham's death on Twitter. "Today we mourn the passing of Walt Cunningham: U.S. Marine, patriot, and Apollo astronaut. Cunningham spent 11 days in low-Earth orbit during Apollo 7, the first crewed Apollo flight, and was instrumental to our Moon landing's program success," the space agency wrote. Cunningham was one of three astronauts aboard the 1968 Apollo 7 mission, an 11-day spaceflight that beamed live television broadcasts as they orbited Earth, paving the way for the moon landing less than a year later.

The House voted Wednesday night to adjourn and reconvene on Thursday after GOP leader Kevin McCarthy failed in a sixth attempt for the speakership earlier in the day. Republican representative Tom Cole made a motion to adjourn, which succeeded on a razor-thin margin with 216 Republicans favoring and 214 Democrats opposing. There was much hubbub as the votes rolled in, with some members grumbling, some cheering, and others dashing across the room as the process was about to end. Republican representatives Matt Gaetz, Lauren Boebert, Andy Biggs, and Brent Crane voted not to adjourn. “I think it’s probably best to let people work through it some more.

Metal detectors first installed outside the House chamber after the January 6 Capitol protests were removed Tuesday as Republicans took control of the lower chamber. Then–Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D., Calif.) ordered the installment of the machines after the riot and later threatened lawmakers who did not comply with the security measure to pay a $5,000 fine for a first offense and $10,000 for a second. “It is tragic that this step is necessary, but the chamber of the People’s House must and will be safe,” she said at the time. Pelosi’s rules led to outcry from several Republican members,

Amazon’s ongoing layoffs will affect more than 17,000 workers, according to a report from The Wall Street Journal. That’s significantly more than previously rumored — in November, The New York Times reported that the company was aiming to cut its workforce by around 10,000. In September 2022, the company said it had around 1.5 million employees in total. Since then, Amazon admitted it was consolidating “some teams and programs” in its hardware and services division, as SVP Dave Limp put it in a November email. However, the company never officially confirmed the original number. CEO Andy Jassy did tell workers that there would be “more role reductions

President Biden confirmed Wednesday that he plans to visit the southern border as part of a trip to Mexico City next week. “That’s my intention, we’re working out the details now,” he told Fox News, and other reporters, as he disembarked from Air Force one. Between January 9-10, the president will join Mexican President Andrés Manuel López Obrador and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau for the North American Leaders’ Summit, where they will collaborate on growing their countries’ economies and addressing current challenges to the region. Biden has received intense criticism for not stopping by the border once since he assumed office.

Canada doesn’t have reeducation camps…yet. But Justin Trudeau’s Canada is making progress towards becoming China’s North American twin. Compliance with the ideological diktats of the intelligentsia is apparently a requirement in order to keep your job these days. Yesterday Jordan Peterson revealed and the College of Ontario Psychologists acknowledged that he has been “sentenced” to mandatory retraining in order to retain his license to practice clinical psychology in Canada. Just in case you didn’t know, Pierre Poilievre is the leader of the opposition Conservative Party in Canada, meaning that Jordan Peterson is literally being punished for criticizing the current Prime Minister and retweeting the statement of his political opponent

Remember when new algorithms and/or Elon Musk’s pique over the tracking of his private jet resulted in the temporary suspension of journalists? The mainstream media (and others) shrieked over the Danger to Journalism, Democracy Dying in Darkness, and the corporate silencing of dissent and scrutiny on Twitter over seven-day suspensions. Musk eventually reversed them within a day, but media platforms warned that the new management at Twitter was a threat to the Republic, or something. Oddly, though, all of the same outlets seem veeeerrrrry quiet about one key revelation in last night’s Twitter Files tranche.
