Oberlin Community, College Reflect on
Town-Gown Relationships Post Gibson’s Litigation

Last week, Oberlin College announced it would pay Gibson’s Bakery the sum of $36.59 million in damages and attorney’s fees. With litigation now concluded, members of the community are reflecting on the circumstances of the original incident and the culmination of five years of litigation. Karen Schaefer is an Oberlin resident who has worked as a freelance public radio journalist for the last 20 years and has written about the College on a number of occasions.[Snip]“You have to remember that this was the night after the election of 2016 had occurred,” Schaefer continued “I think everybody in this town, which is mostly liberal,

Comments:

Aside from Ms. Schaefer’s 2016 election result observation, a fourth generation Oberlin College student expressed the same feeling about the political atmosphere but went further in stating her dissatisfaction with Oberlin College’s involvement with the protests and litigation. The Gibson family and legal team hope the Oberlin community will continue to patronize the bakery; however, Oberlin College has not made any statement pertaining to future business with the bakery nor has it extended an olive branch to the Gibson family—perhaps that will take time and a change in Oberlin College’s administrator(s).

Gibson's should probably move further away from the college and might want to discourage business from THAT clientele. In keeping with woke precepts, I have no doubt that the wienies will try to trap Gibson's into another legal bind. How many times have the same sex wedding planners attacked the same bakery? How many times has MTG been swatted? From the very get-go the college's position was defective. They, THE COLLEGE, attempted to morph a crime into a racially based free speech hoax, and persisted in that sham for FIVE years. The college is hopeless and should be allowed to braise in their own juices. Gibson's should try for another 130 year stint, but stay away from Oberlin College for simple self preservation.

The anti-white, racist wokesters (that's what they are) are NOT good losers. Gibson's should be very wary of doing business with them. I'm an alum (Conservatory) and I've been beyond angry for years at the College's reprehensible malevolence. Money is insufficient. Oberlin should give the family an abject apology, should fire enabling administrators and staff, including all of its lawyers, and should educate its students on exact what was unconscionable about the college's actions. The College looks determined to be unrepentant, unflinching and unwilling to consider any introspection whatever. So long as that is their position, I hope they drown in the sewer they've made of their institution.

#8, these were not gay students. They were black students who stole a bottle of wine and were arrested after the bakery owners called the police. There had been previous shoplifting problems involving black students and the two in this instance confessed. But the truth didn’t matter to the ultra left wing college which used the arrests as an excuse to stir up racial division and to harm the bakery.

Re #8, it had nothing to do with gays. Black students were caught shoplifting wine, and lunatic demonstations started at the bakery because stopping shoplifting by blacks is "racist". And the college supported the demonstrators who called stopping shoplifting "racism". And the college used their megaphone in the public square to continuously smear and harm the bakery monetarily by damaging their business, and stopping long term business with the bakery.
