California has officially become the first in the world to enforce a ban on the sale of new gasoline cars by 2035, following a public hearing on Thursday that ended with California Air Resources Board voting to approve the policy. Automakers are now required to reduce the number of gas guzzlers they sell in order to reach the first quota of the plan that mandates 35 percent of new cars, SUVs and small pickups sold in California by 2026 be zero-emission vehicles. The quota increases every two years, with 51 percent by 2028, 68 percent by 2030 and then 100 percent of all new vehicles sold should be

The economy shrank by 0.6% in the second quarter compared to the same period last year — the second consecutive quarter that the nation’s gross domestic product contracted, thus signaling the onset of a recession, according to the latest data. The US Commerce Department issued a revised reading of second-quarter figures on Thursday — nearly a month after its initial report measured a 0.9% contraction compared to the year prior, Fox Business reported. In the first quarter of this year, GDP fell by 1.6% — the worst-performing quarter since the spring of 2020. At the time, much of the country was in lockdown due to the spread of the coronavirus.

Education Sec. Miguel Cardona on Thursday refused to say how much the White House had projected President Biden's student debt cancellation would cost - despite repeated asks. 'The projections are still coming out depending on how many people take advantage of it,' Cardona said when asked by CNN's John Berman for a number. 'Mr. Secretary what's the range?' Berman pressed. 'Well, like I said, those projections are still coming out,' Cardona said again.

Exuberant over a string of recent legislative victories, and launching his midterm campaigning in earnest, President Joe Biden swaggered into Maryland on Thursday and excoriated his predecessor’s philosophy as “semi-fascism,” in what constituted an unusually pointed and highly charged denunciation of Republicans. “What we’re seeing now is either the beginning or the death knell of extreme MAGA philosophy,” Biden told Democratic donors in the Washington suburb of Rockville. Calling out those he labeled as “extreme” Republicans, Biden said: “It’s not just Trump, it’s the entire philosophy that underpins the — I’m going to say something, it’s like semi-fascism.”

Pause for just a moment on all the times you have heard it said how terrible it is that we are a divided nation, and how frequently these laments also carry the call for more openness and tolerance between people, and that the way to unify this nation is through acceptance of others. Okay, now toss all of those sentiments into a dumpster. Currently, in Dallas they are staging a massive national podcasting conference, dubbed Podcast Movement 2022. Said to be the largest community of podcasters, all the expected events are there from panels and dinners to an extensive media row, with thousands in attendance. However, one guy has sent

The U.S. Western District Court of Michigan denied a plea by Michigan Secretary of State Jocelyn Benson (D) that sought to halt a lawsuit alleging she kept nearly 26,000 dead registrants on the state’s voter rolls. In November 2021, as Breitbart News reported, the Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) filed suit against Benson accusing her of keeping nearly 26,000 dead registrants on Michigan voter rolls and thus violating the National Voter Registration Act (NVRA). Benson, in response, sought to have the lawsuit thrown out. On Thursday, the district court denied Benson’s effort to dismiss the case.

The ongoing surge of migrants to the Big Apple has forced the city to strike emergency deals with 14 hotels because the shelter system is overloaded amid President Biden’s border crisis. Immigrant Affairs Commissioner Manuel Castro revealed the eye-popping total during a news conference at the Port Authority Bus Terminal in Manhattan, where five buses arrived Thursday carrying migrants relocated by Texas Gov. Gov. Kathy Hochul, who hasn’t proven shy about issuing orders, had one for the state’s Republicans this week — all 5.4 million of them: “Just jump on a bus and head down to Florida where you belong, OK?” she said. “You are not New Yorkers.” If you can move beyond the frankly disgusting political partisanship and intolerance, her message is fiscally irresponsible, even dangerous. The governor probably already knows this, but the state’s extensive public sector is heavily reliant on personal income taxes paid by residents, and with nearly $14 billion in projected budget gaps over the next five years, it can’t afford to lose any taxpayers,

Those laid off include a lot of VPs: Overall, 14% of staff — about 70 people — are being laid off Monday, the vast majority of them on the Max side.

Silver was commenting on Twitter on a Politico article about the Trump Administration pushing for fast-track approval of the COVID vaccine in 2020. It makes perfect sense that you would want to fast-track it, to help people as soon as it was possible. Silver said, “‘Trump pushed for vaccine approvals too fast’ is the worst possible critique of the Trump administration’s COVID policy. That probably saved a lot of lives. If anything approval should have been faster.” His next comment, though

There is little question that the House will change majority control to the Republicans in the November midterm elections. The question at this point is how big of a red wave it will be. Will it be a tsunami or a ripple? Polling is leaning toward shrinking the red wave but this is August and we don’t know what we don’t know yet. Things happen in the last couple of months leading up to an election, especially October surprises. Democrats are really hopeful right now that they may not be doomed to also lose control of the Senate. As AP writes about today, the NRSC is not raising

Make no mistake about it — Joe Biden’s student-loan forgiveness plan is a bailout of Academia, and it’s as bad or worse as the Washington Post’s editorial board declares. Allahpundit mentioned it in his earlier round-up of Democratic pushback, but the editorial is worth highlighting for its perhaps-unintended exposure of just how badly federal education policy performs in the real world. The White House has launched a full-court press to defend against criticisms of the student-loan forgiveness plan. The normally friendly WaPo editors reject every element of that defense, especially the notion that there’s an emergency that requires such action:
