I taught English at Yale University for ten years. I had some vivid, idiosyncratic students—people who went on to write novels, devote themselves to their church, or just wander the world for a few years. But mostly I taught what one of them herself called “excellent sheep.”
These students were excellent, technically speaking. They were smart, focused, and ferociously hard-working.
But they were also sheep: stunted in their sense of purpose, waiting meekly for direction, frequently anxious and lost.
I was so struck by this—that our “best and brightest” students are so often as helpless as children—that I wrote a book about it.

The federal govt. and MSM are raising a generation to be excellent unquestioning camp guards.
Exhibit A - covid mask compliance seems, from my observation, to be almost universal among teenagers.

I find it highly informative that "College is now regarded as the last stage of childhood, not the first of adulthood." and "for the young progressive elite, “raised in comfortable and affluent homes by helicopter parents,” “[t]here was always some authority they could demand justice from.” That is the precise form that campus protests have taken in the age of woke: appeals to authority, not defiance of it."
Young people in "rebellion", supposedly an act of independence, are in fact surrendering their independence to existing authority. Further, in abdicating their responsibility for personally dealing with life issues, they also abdicate actually investigating and learning the truth about those issues. They function by hooking onto superficial slogans. They are programmed by the propaganda messages targeted at them. They are devoid of thoughtful analysis and critical thinking and, in the end, responsibility. They are throwing temper tantrums until the adults (an authority) yields to them and promises to "fix" things. If they find that the messages or authority misleads them, it is not their fault. In essence, they were "only following orders".

People have been mostly sheep since ancient days. Tribes and empires formed around strong leaders and "gods" who brooked no independent thought or action. When things got out of kilter, there were troubles in the land. Look at the Egyptians under Akhenaten, who introduced a new religion to Egypt, and after his demise, he was "canceled" - his monuments dismantled with his image chiseled out, his statues destroyed, and his name excluded from lists of rulers compiled by later pharaohs. The "old" religion was restored, and peace fell across the land.
This is basic human psychology. The masses have no interest in leading anyone anywhere. They seek cues from opinion leaders, from the next barstool to the celebrity most admired, religious leader, spouse, or elsewhere. (The Egyptian religious leaders resisted Akhenaten and riled the people over the loss of their "gods".) The sheeple go with the flow - it's always safe. Doesn't matter the age, sex, or race. In politics, they're called "moderates".

The cow goes “moo”, the cat goes “meow”, the sheep go “it’s Putin’s fault”.

Well, Mr. 'English' professor, you are likely teaching a Freshman-level course to students who have just come out of high school and are just starting their college education.
Many of your students recognize that you are the instructor and they are the students.
They are there to learn, not to argue.
In addition, pretty much all of the students are trying to get through your class with the best grade possible.
Knowing what often happens, grade-wise to students who don't 'Toe the Line', what do you expect? Argument and Defiance?
No, from most students you are going to get complete cooperation and submission.
If you want argument, perhaps try teaching a class in politics or philosophy, and put in the course description that well-supported arguments of differing opinions are encouraged.

he is clueless. a lot of those 60's demonstrations were about getting laid. I imagine woke "chicks" are pretty similar to the 60's peace and love ladies

Enjoyable read. I agree with the thoughts of #5 and agree with #6 about what mostly motivated 60's protesters, but as to motivations for today's male protesters, have you looked at these young, woke women?

I agree with the posters who believe he is giving way too much credit to the 60's protesters. They were in it for fashion and conforming to the Cool of the day just like now. Phyllis Schlafly commented that they were "obedient."

Not so. Children today do not have free speech. Just the word "Racist" shuts down conversation.

This is brilliant, a description of these helpless but destructive young people and how they got that way.
