Fresh suspicion that Covid may have been tinkered with in a lab emerged today after scientists found genetic material owned by Moderna in the virus's spike protein. They identified a tiny snippet of code that is identical to part of a gene patented by the vaccine maker three years before the pandemic. It was discovered in SARS-CoV-2's unique furin cleavage site, the part that makes it so good at infecting people and separates it from other coronaviruses.(Snip)They claim there is a one-in-three-trillion chance Moderna's sequence randomly appeared through natural evolution. But there is some debate about whether the match is as rare

Two prosecutors heading the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office’s probe into the Trump Organization called it quits on Wednesday–throwing the case into question. The resignations of Mark Pomerantz and Carey Dunne were first reported by The New York Times. A source confirmed to The Post that the prosecutors jointly stepped down. The source stressed that the coordinated nature of the departures was a sign of intense frustration with the direction of the case. According to the Times, the move came after District Attorney Alvin Bragg suggested to the attorneys that he had doubts about the case.

When COVID vaccines first became available in January of last year to more than 4 million people, there was a stampede for appointments. Frustrated residents spent hours scouring dozens of vaccine provider websites, trying to secure a coveted slot. Some would wake up in the middle of the night to forage for new listings.(Snip)In an effort to end the disarray, the state’s Department of Health contracted with a subsidiary of Navient Corp. to create a vaccine call center to answer resident questions and to help make vaccine appointments. It launched on Jan. 25, 2021. The state spent more than $90 million on the contract for all of 2021,

Boston—America’s first newspaper dedicated to advocating for the end of slavery is being resurrected and reimagined more than two centuries later as the nation continues to grapple with its legacy of racism. The revived version of The Emancipator is a joint effort by Boston University’s Center for Antiracist Research and The Boston Globe’s Opinion team that’s expected to launch in the coming months.
Deborah Douglas and Amber Payne, co-editors-in-chief of the new online publication, say it will feature written and video opinion pieces, multimedia series, virtual talks and other content by respected scholars and seasoned journalists. The goal, they say, is to “reframe” the national conversation

Gavin, how are you, man?' he said upon entering. Newsom told BIden he had an 'over/under that you were going to do this today.' 'I'm impressed,' the Democratic governor added.

Federal officials warned Tuesday that as much as $80 billion in unemployment benefits could have fraudulently gone to cybercriminals and international crime rings. Officials from the Government Accountability Office (GAO) and the U.S. Secret Service say improper accountability measures at the federal and state levels aided the fraud throughout the coronavirus pandemic.(Snip)International syndicates and cyberhackers quickly set up fake profiles, using pilfered personal information, to steal billions from the federal government. Much of the tactics were already well known to law enforcement agencies since cybercriminals had previously used them to bilk money from disaster relief programs. US home prices saw their biggest increase in at least 34 years in 2021, according to data released Tuesday, as buyers spent the year snapping up homes and builders struggled to keep up. Home prices surged 18.8 percent last year, according to the S&P CoreLogic Case-Shiller US National Home Price index, the biggest jump since its creation and much more than the 10.4 percent jump seen in 2020.
Fueled by remote work and booming regional economies, mass migration to the South, Southwest and Mountain West drove some of the sharpest increases in home prices, as demand outstripped supply. The biggest increase in home prices took place in Phoenix,

Wauwatosa, Wis.—Twin sisters in Wisconsin are facing attempted homicide charges while the restaurant worker they are accused of shooting and beating is recovering in a neck brace. Anthony Rodriguez, 26, says he was the only server working around midnight Jan. 30 at a George Webb location in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin.
