The Army wants a new combat vehicle and is willing to pay more than $7 billion to the defense contractor that can provide it. The service released a bid this week for the next generation Joint Light Tactical Vehicle (JLTV), designed to allow troops to carry out a range of missions “while providing protected, sustained and networked mobility for personnel and payloads across the full spectrum of military operations.”(Snip)The current provider, Oshkosh Defense, says it plans to compete for the new contract with a hybrid-electric light tactical vehicle. The Army’s recently released climate strategy said transitioning to more eco-friendly combat vehicles is a priority

They can put Rainbow colored Windmills on top to power the military electric vehicles. Maybe Bootyboy can install charging stations in the desert, the jungle and everywhere worldwide to keep them charged. I hear China has a great deal for batteries, but they must be bought from Hunter Biden’s company to get the discount.

For the record, the requisition on this asks for real vehicles. Electric was not in the list so won't be considered. This is pure virtue signal and politics by the company.

Once they go electric they are doomed. If they build a "light" vehicle without enough armor to defeat land mines they are doomed.

"Hybrid electric" vehicles. It just so happens that my college master's thesis in engineering was on the design optimization of hybrid-electric vehicles. And as a project, myself and four other grad students designed and built an hybrid electric transit bus and tested the same. I happen to know a good bit about hybrid electric vehicles.
They are a very, very stupid idea for this application. They make SOME sense in a application where constant stop and go operation at slow speeds, like city buses or taxicabs, is the norm. This is because they recover energy in the braking cycle so they can be better for short runs (a couple of blocks) and then a stop, repeating all day.
They are heavier, have less cargo/passenger space, and are more much expensive than straight internal combustion vehicles and the ONLY PART of the driving cycle where they have any benefit at all is under braking. The rest of the driving cycle they are at a disadvantage with reduced performance in ALL ways, at a greater cost. STUPID, STUPID, STUPID for a military vehicle....except perhaps a bus on a base.
As usual, green crap wasting money that we need for defense on more expensive, LESS CAPABLE crap.

Gonna play decils advocate here. I can think of a myriad of reasons why a HYBRID military vehicle could be a huge battlefield advantage. A hybrid, unlike an all electric requires a much smaller battery and no recharging stations off base. The use of regenerative braking like a Prius could probably be very efficient in an off road vehicle which is probably braking much more than a normal suburban commuter. The added fuel economy of the electric would be a huge advantage in forward operation sitiuations. Remember Rommel lost africa in part due to his inability to fuel his tanks. Even a modest 20% increase in range could be huge. Add to that the undeniable advantages an electric motor has over the Internal Combustion Engine when it comes to torque I could see a hybrid vehicle outperforming a traditional combat vehicle in rough terrain and in hauling into remote areas.
That being said there would be downsides, weight being the one I would think being the foremost. A dual drive system would ad complexity and lithium ion batteries would have to be armored due to their dislike of water. AN entirey new maintainance training program would also be required. And as always, Batteries, Batteries, Batteries,
I wouldn'nt dismiss it out of hand but whether or not the technology is ready is a big question.

8, also, batteries perform very poorly in cold weather. We would never have a combat vehicle fleet that only works in the tropics.
This whole concept is silly and the military never asked for it.

Re #8. The "added fuel economy of a hybrid" is a mirage in most situations. Note that when Honda and Toyota brought out their first hybrids the simultaneously DROPPED the equivalent econ-box models with conventional gasoline engines in the same sized, low aero drag vehicles. This was because it was WAY too obivious if you took the same basic body shell and ran it as a gasoline car, it got the same or slightly better highway mileage and only very slightly (~10-20%) better around town mileage. So those models were stricken from the showrooms, pronto. Your Prius or Honda Civic Hybrid would get 52-55 mph. A diesel Rabbit got the same. A Corolla or Civic gas model of the same era, the "stripper" models with the 1200 cc motors instead of the 1800 cc motors would get 45-48 mph in the same conditions. Other than the "saving the planet" BS hybrids would never have sold if the auto makers had kept their high gas mileage models around and advertised them well. But the hybrids were being pushed by the government, and the automakers have learned to be very, very compliant with government rules. Sadly so.
There is VERY little braking in normal off highway driving, and what small amounts are done are mostly "heat braking" not "electric braking". The "electric braking" which generates electricity and stores it, only works for most of hybrids from about 10 mph and up. And most of the time, off the road vehicles are going not a whole lot over 10 mph. At 10 and down, most braking is with conventional brakes, all energy going to heat.
The speed that the 'generators' spin at with low speed braking is insufficient to generate electricity efficiently.
And the energy available to recover is a square function of speed....the energy to be recovered at 40 mph is 16 times the energy that an be recovered at 10mph....and with the low generator RPMs, capture efficiency is lower, so it's probably closer to 32 times, which is why they stop bothering to try below somewhere around 10 mph and go to normal brakes. the generators are not working much and pretty well stop having any retarding effect at low speeds.
Hybrids are NOT "more efficient" except in stop and go driving, like typical city driving where speeds reach 35-45 mph or so for only a short time, then you go to braking for the next light or stop sign. In those driving cycles, energy recovery is pretty good, perhaps 85%, leading to better fuel efficiency for hybrids. Stop and go at 0-20....WAY less to be gained from regenerative braking and still losing on acceleration side due to higher weight. And on straight highway driving, long constant speeds, like across Nebraska....the excess weight of the hybrid parts is just a loss and the overall fuel economy is lower than a non-hybrid, which will be lighter. Some hybrid vehicles gain a bit because they are smaller in size and more streamlined than regular cars. The car makers are desperate to 'prove' how superior hybrids are, and resort to all sorts of trickery.
And this says nothing about the cost penalty, or internal volume penalty of hybrids.
Like electrics, hybrids only can make some sense in short haul, in the city, around town driving. Their "benefits" don't exist anywhere else.

I guess the ones the military had were left behind in Afghanistan. The new ones will come equipped with white flags and be painted pink with BLM signs and LGBQTWXYZ stickers on them. They'll be fueled by pixie dust and unicorn farts.

First, the new vehicle needs to be atomic powered. Some spacecraft are you know. Very high speed and plenty of power for the mounted RAY GUN. It needs to float too. Enough capacity for 24 Army troops with 6ft CV19 separation (never cured according to DOD WOKE Generals). Automatic navigation such that it will never work in a Islamic Country or near the US Southern border. All carbon fiber construction....no coal produced steel.

MIT chemical engineers created a new material that is stronger than steel and as light as plastic and can be easily manufactured in large quantities. You could coat military vehicles with this material. The yield strength is twice that of steel, even though the material has only 1/6th the density of steel.

I suggest our glorious administration go to Akmed's Used Toyota dealership in Kabul. Their little trucks with a .50 cal in the bed took out our diplomatically hobbled, R.O.E. castrated military. They only come in white, sorry.

If Biden tries to sign a multi billion dollar contact with a Chinese Communist Corporation for new electric combat vehicles for the US military, it will be another occasion for the wimpy Republicans to wake up, object, and follow the money!
