Seattle—An investigation by Seattle's Office of Police Accountability (OPA) shows officers exchanged fake radio transmissions about a nonexistent group of right-wing extremists at a crucial moment during 2020 racial justice protests. Fake radio chatter on June 8, 2020 about members of the Proud Boys marching around downtown Seattle, some possibly carrying guns, and then heading to confront protesters on Capitol Hill was an improper “ruse,” or dishonest ploy, that exacerbated a volatile situation, according to OPA's report.(Snip)June 8, 2020, was the day the Seattle Police Department abandoned the East Precinct in the Capitol Hill neighborhood following protests sparked by the death of George Floyd in Minneapolis.

The old model of illegal immigration along the southern border was shattered in 2021, according to data released by the Department of Homeland Security this week that shows the demographics of the typical border jumper have been completely rewritten. Mexicans, who for decades represented the overwhelming number of illegal immigrants, dropped to 28% of the flow, their lowest share “in recorded history,” according to Customs and Border Protection. Meanwhile, the number of women and girls jumping the border soared to nearly 400,000, more than doubling the average in recent years.(Snip)Migrants from the Central American countries of Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador—known as the Northern Triangle—accounted for 44%

Three people ran a scheme to steal thousands of undelivered Amazon packages but were busted by cops after they dumped hundreds of boxes in Oklahoma, authorities said. One man accused in what the Oklahoma County Sheriff’s Office called a “massive Amazon theft ring” was apparently a third-party delivery driver for the company who may have loaded extra pallets on a truck, cops said.(Snip)Deputies identified the perpetrators as Cesar Yasnier Cerqueira Rojas, an undocumented Cuban immigrant, who drove a delivery truck owned by Dinneris Matos Delgado. Police also arrested Maikel Perez Laurencio, 38, who they said was also a third-party driver and undocumented immigrant from Cuba.

Minneapolis Mayor Jacob Frey and incoming interim Police Chief Amelia Huffman on Wednesday touted a new crime-fighting plan that calls for hiring dozens of new police officers, expanding partnerships with other law enforcement agencies and beefing up units focused on investigating violent robberies and carjackings.
Speaking to reporters at City Hall, Frey said that the department plans to hire five recruit classes to help close a staffing gap created by the departures of hundreds of officers since the murder of George Floyd in the spring of 2020.(Snip)Since the start of 2020, the department has lost roughly 300 officers, creating significant staffing shortages.

White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Wednesday that President Biden thinks he needs more downtime—despite the fact that he’s spent more than a quarter of his days in office at one of his Delaware homes. “I know the president doesn’t have public events today,” Psaki told reporters during her regular briefing. “He does have a number of meetings with policy teams and that’s often what he’s doing behind the scenes.” “If he were standing here today—which I know he’s always invited, is what you guys will say, but he would say we never give him any free time or any time to think,” the press secretary added.

Attorney General Merrick B. Garland on Wednesday defended the Justice Department’s efforts to prosecute those responsible for the Jan. 6 Capitol riot. In a prepared speech on the eve of the one-year anniversary of the attack, Mr. Garland said “there is no higher priority” for the department. “The Justice Department remains committed to holding all Jan. 6 perpetrators, at any level, accountable under law—whether they were present that day or were otherwise criminally responsible for the assault on our democracy,” he said. “We will follow the facts wherever they lead.”
The attorney general’s comments come amid criticism that he and his investigators are focusing

The American government must have successful relationships with academia and the business sector in order to win the ongoing data competition with China, according to David Spirk, the Department of Defense‘s chief data officer. Both the U.S.government and the Chinese government scoop up all kinds of data, from publicly accessible information to knowledge gathered from satellites and electronic signals. But China has access to data generated by its commercial sector because of policies that remove barriers between businesses and the country’s communist rulers. America’s government and business sectors are independent, though the Biden administration has sought new partnerships between companies and government to bolster U.S. cyber defenses.

South Africa’s government recently erected four separate checkpoints along its border with Zimbabwe in an effort to detect and arrest “hundreds of undocumented Zimbabweans” who have crossed into South Africa illegally in recent days, the online newspaper New Zimbabwe reported on Tuesday. South Africa’s Department of Homes Affairs funded the construction of the roadblocks, manned by national police and defense forces along with South African customs officials. Two of the checkpoints are located “at Baobab, one at Musina and another at Mantsole,” according to New Zimbabwe.(Snip)Most of the border crossers are reportedly Zimbabweans who have previously crossed into and worked in South Africa illegally.

A top White House official on Wednesday said supply chain disruptions could continue into 2022 because the omicron variant could impact the supply networks both overseas and in the U.S.
“It’s hard to tell that the supply chain pressures have peaked,” White House Port Envoy Jon Porcari told reporters. “I think what is clear is that the pandemic laid bare what was the underlying reality, which was that the supply chain was stressed even before the pandemic.” Mr. Porcari‘s statement contradicts President Biden’s declaration that last month that supply chain failures and widespread consumer goods shortages forecast for the 2021 holiday buying season had not materialized.

Washington—Democratic and Republican lawmakers have held early discussions about another round of coronavirus stimulus spending as they seek to blunt the fast-spreading omicron variant and its urgent threats to public health and economic recovery. The early efforts have focused primarily on authorizing billions of dollars to help an array of businesses—including restaurants, performance venues, gyms and even minor league sports teams—that face another potential blow to their already-battered balance sheets as a result of the evolving pandemic. In recent weeks, the talks have been led by Sens. Ben Cardin, D-Md., and Roger Wicker, R-Miss., according to four people familiar with the matter,
