One sign of success in a sport: When you have the highest winning percentage of any long-tenured coach — but your coaching career becomes almost an afterthought in your biography. That description applies to John Madden, the former Oakland Raiders coach who transformed himself into one of the best-known, and most-loved, broadcasters in sports — and the namesake of a multi-billion dollar video game franchise. Madden died suddenly on Tuesday at age 85, according to a statement released by the NFL, in which Commissioner Roger Goodell said that “there will never be another John Madden,

Comments:

I haven't watched a minute of the NFL in over four years, and never will again. But John Madden was a delight. Rest in Peace, Coach.

I remember him storming up and down the sidelines in the 70s as he coached the Raiders. He was a force to be reckoned with on Sundays. It was amazing how his demeanor changed when he became an NFL broadcaster. His knowledge of the game helped seasoned fans and occasional watchers alike understand what was happening. Roger Goodell had it right- there will never be another John Madden. We lost a good one yesterday.

Smiling, as I think about the one time Madden got it wrong. Super Bowl 36, the Rams tied the game at 17 and the Patriots received the ensuing kick-off with 1:30 left and no time outs. Madden recommended NE eat the clock and go to overtime but Bill Belichick had other plans. I can hear his voice even now, as a sophmore QB named Tom Brady marched down the field: "This is not a good idea." To his regular-guy credit, though, Madden changed his mind after Brady completed three straight passes. A few plays later, Vinatieri kicked a 48-yard field goal as time ran out. How can anyone not love John Madden?

I feel lucky to have been around back in those Oakland Raiders Glory Days, when Madden was the coach, working with Kenny "The Snake." Fifty years ago, I was POSITIVE that Madden would have a heart attack, right there on the sidelines! Thankfully he survived (albeit with ulcers) and went on to lend his expertise about football (and Turducken!) to us fans for so many years. Al Davis always said, "Just win, baby!" John Madden did that better than anybody. I already miss him.

Of all the great NFL head coaches who coached more than 100 games, none has had a higher career win percentage than Vince Lombardi (.738) -- not Shula, not Landry, not Belichick, not Halas, not Lambeau, not Parcells, not Brown. None, that is, except for John Madden (.759).

Many on the political right oppose so-called “Big Government” due primarily to the tyranny it inevitably inflicts on its citizens, and we’re seeing scary examples of the phenomenon in real-time. Examples of such autocracy include vaccine and mask mandates, jury intimidation (see the Derek Chauvin trial), and unapologetic assaults on our First Amendment right to free speech. But there are other aspects of Big Government that are both infuriating and repulsive, one of which is its inexcusable waste; and we saw a ridiculous example of such waste last week.

The world seemed to get closer to spinning out of its orbit in 2021. If you’d told me five years ago that men would be treated as women, criminals would not be prosecuted, and censorship would be widespread, I wouldn’t have believed you. What were once considered the most basic, scientific truths (such as that you’re born with your sex and can’t change it) have broken down. Governments are no longer serving their primary function of providing security and protecting borders. There are many more. As I reflected on the past year, here are just some of the many things that happened in 2021 that I never would have believed possible.

A holiday party at the home of Connecticut Gov. Ned Lamont earlier this month led to a "small number" of guests contracting "breakthrough" coronavirus infections, according to reports. Neither Lamont nor his wife Annie Lamont were affected, CTInsider.com reported. The infections occurred even though guests were required to provide proof of full vaccination status as well as a negative coronavirus test result, the report said. The Lamonts learned about the infections during the week that followed the Dec. 11 party, according to the report. Max Weiss, the governor’s communications director, did not say whether the Lamonts and their guests were wearing masks during the party, CTInsider.com reported.

Last week, the world glimpsed a future in which vaccine passports are implanted under the skin. A viral video from South China Morning Post profiled a Swedish start-up hub, Epicenter, that injects its employees with microchips. “Right now it is very convenient to have a COVID passport always accessible on your implant,” its chief disruption officer, Hannes Sjöblad, told the interviewer. Oddly enough, he repeatedly spoke of chipping “arms” when we clearly see a woman opening doors with her hand. Two years earlier, Sjöblad told ITV, “I want us humans to open up and improve our sensory universe, our cognitive functions.

Omicron is here, and with it comes death and destruction — unless, that is, you cancel Christmas, hide in your homes, get all the boosters, double mask, and demand to see negative Covid tests and proof of vaccination for anyone who darkens your doorstep. Any precautions, no matter how seemingly outlandish, are seen as justifiable to protect yourself from this new and terrifying variant. So it is, anyway, with a disturbingly large number of reporters and commentators in the corporate press, whose coverage and individual responses to Covid have become increasingly divorced from that of the rest of America.

A few days after the 2020 presidential election, President-elect Joe Biden pledged to be “a president who seeks not to divide but to unify,” a theme he’d campaigned on. “Let this grim era of demonization in America begin to end here and now,” he said in his victory speech. “It’s time to put away the harsh rhetoric, lower the temperature, see each other again, listen to each other again.” So much for all that. As Biden’s first year in office comes to a close, he has proven to be one of the most divisive presidents in generations,

PF: When it comes to news stories for this year, it seems to me there was a lot more bad than good; and I’m generally an optimistic person. It also marks the second year in a row that I’m making such an assessment. We’re in a rut. Yet while there wasn’t much to smile about this year, what happened in Virginia and New Jersey in early-November certainly qualifies.

The song “Baby It’s Cold Outside” has certainly had its fair share of controversy in recent years. In 2018, the infamous Christmas classic made headlines when numerous radio stations moved to scrap the song after its lyrics were deemed controversial. Although many conservatives may see this as another example of cancel culture plaguing our society, I view it as a necessary development for a more progressive civilization. Such grotesque and misogynistic rhetoric should not be tolerated, especially in supposed family-oriented music. While the attempted canceling of “Baby It’s Cold Outside” is a step in the right direction, it didn’t go nearly far enough.

Last week the corrupt media’s penchant for spinning all things conservative caused a near-fatal case of whiplash. The left began by chastising conservatives for supposedly building “its own echo chamber,” but by the next day, when news broke that Devin Nunes was resigning from Congress to serve as the CEO of Donald Trump’s new media company, the complained-of conservative ecosystem merely represented grift. Both narratives are false, however, which is precisely why leftists peddled them so hard. Axios launched the “echo chamber” accusation with its article titled, “Right wing builds its own echo chamber.”

While the contract gives the company three years to complete the facility, it is not immediately clear when it will ramp up to full production, which is expected to pump out 83.3 million tests per month.

The Biden administration paused shipments of the monoclonal antibodies because according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), the treatment isn’t effective against Omicron, which they claim became the dominant strain earlier this month.

It may surprise you to learn that the most common type of case federal prosecutors bring is not for drugs or fraud, as many think. As reported by The Washington Times, that honor goes to cases against illegal aliens who try to reenter the country after having been deported. And almost all those charged are Hispanic, of course. Now, according to The Times, federal courts are facing the ridiculous question of whether the “imbalance” in deportations means U.S. immigration law is… wait for it… racist. Ridiculous? One court in Nevada has ruled it means exactly that. Judge Miranda Du, an Obama appointee [no kidding?],

Lumping Donald Trump with Osama Bin Laden? That's going too easy on the former president! At least, if you ask CNN's "national security analyst" Juliette Kayyem, a former Obama DHS assistant secretary. Appearing on Thursday morning's New Day, Kayyem said that when a year ago in an Atlantic article she depicted Trump as "the leader of a terror movement," she was, as she recently tweeted, actually being "too kind" to him! (Video) Perhaps realizing just how outrageous was Kayyem's accusation, substitute host John Avlon tried to soft-pedal it. He framed it as his Kayyem calling Trump head of an "extremist" movement, not a "terror" one.
