Through December 21, 2021, the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) reported a total of 5,779 unruly passenger incidents this year. Of these incidents, the FAA has launched 1,054 investigations, which is approximately a 600% increase from the annual average of the previous twenty-five years.
Historically, factors such as overcrowding, cancellations, and narrow seats cause in-flight incidents. However, this year, the mask mandate, which the FAA instituted on February 1, has been the major factor causing the massive increase in incidents.
Despite a multitude of studies showing the ineffectiveness of masks and the potential negative health effects, some airlines are now increasing their restrictions and forcing passengers to wear masks while eating and drinking.

Ditto, OP. I’m retired and all family members are within a day’s drive. My only regret is that I may never get to make that trip to Israel which has been on my bucket list for decades. (And right now, even if I could tolerate the flight to get there, they wouldn’t let my in.)

Sue these people.
Saw a case on a court show. Don't know if it was true.
A man is traveling to NYC to see his estranged daughter perform in a concert. He is trying to mend relations with his daughter. On the plane he is seated next to a woman. He starts coughing. She takes on some kind of sanitizer, sprays it on him, and in the air. The plane gets diverted to Chicago, and everyone ordered off the plane. Two hours later, the flight is allowed to continue. He misses the concert, and his estranged daughter is madder than ever, and he ends up getting a hotel room. His daughter would not let him stay with her. He took the woman on the plane to court, suing for the concert ticket, the hotel room, and emotional distress. The judge awarded him on all counts.
Don't let people get away with this nonsense.

If my destination is in the lower 48, I drive. I have since TSA. This way I can take guns without hassle, meet nice people along the way, take the Mrs to sleazy roadside motels, smoke when I want, and above all, not deal with airlines and airports. When someone is smiling but treating you like dirt, you are still being treated like dirt.

My state’s giant urban airports were a stressful mess before COVID. My last two Southwest flights in 2019 were crammed full with sweet stewards who were putting up with rude people. I cannot imagine what it is like for the employees now. I decided then its driving for me now unless drastically necessary.
I think your idea is best, #2!

The airline staff are known to refer to the passengers as “self loading freight”.

If you can take in enough oxygen to stay alive while wearing a mask - - doesn't it figure that microscopic virus bugs can get through it too?
Only an utter fool - - a complete boob - - would voluntarily wear one of those things.

Apparently, to the demographic mostly involved, an airplane looks like a Walmart, Rite Aid, or Louis Vuitton.

I'll drive to most places, but there are some places where I'm not really into a weeks' worth of driving just to reach my destination only to have to turn around and have to drive for week to return home.

Hard to understand that we live in a free America when one goes to the airport. All we hear are the Federal regulations for alcohol and masks. It sounds more like Russia. Thanks fauci and biden. The CEOs of the airlines don't think we need masks anymore so that made fauci double down on masks and now vaccine passports. How dare anyone question his authority. Getting pretty scary out there right now.

For decades I have avoided flying. In my book, airlines are among the world's worst corporations. The FAA is truly a Hitlerian outfit and it has the airlines by the throat. In turn the airlines attack the customers. It's the old "kick the dog" routine. It's possible that all the fascism contributes to their excellent safety record, nevertheless I still find the conditions of flying intolerable from start to finish.

Yep. After I retired, I promised myself that I would only fly if there was no other option, including staying home.

Contrarian view: reports and documentation and bureaucratic number-crunching and, yes, video of such incidents may be accurate but they may also skew the public's perception. Most people remain polite, friendly, and helpful.
The 'stylish restaurant/lounge in the sky' image was conjured by airlines and advertisers, not actual travelers. Then and now those flying merely want to get from A to B with as little fuss as possible. They don't endorse the useless TSA or silly mask theatre (especially when it's time to hit the bar and breathe in all that 'dangerous' air without a mask) but needs must.
Obviously, some people can't handle their drink or themselves in the air, let alone on the ground. Some people refuse to mind their own business. And some are prone to be control freaks, tinhorns, bullies as numerous flight attendants have shown before, during and after covid.

I have a car in excellent condition that gets great gas mileage. If I need to go somewhere, unless it is a dire emergency, I will drive and save myself the hassle of flying!
