The first official Thanksgiving Proclamation by Plymouth Colony Governor William Bradford 398 years ago provides a key insight into the true meaning of the holiday.
"Inasmuch as the great Father has given us this year an abundant harvest of Indian corn, wheat, peas, beans, squashes, and garden vegetables, and has made the forests to abound with game and the sea with fish and clams, and inasmuch as He has protected us from the ravages of the savages, has spared us from pestilence and disease, has granted us freedom to worship God according to the dictates of our own conscience.

Very interesting article. Thanks for posting.
FTA: ~~"Most people don’t realize that in the first year the Pilgrims suffered greatly and by the first harvest only 53 out of the original 102 survived, only four of those being adult women. One-hundred and twenty-seven more Pilgrims arrived from England that year stabilizing the population, but to show the difficulty of life at Plymouth, the Colony only grew to 200 total people by 1630."~~

Happy Thanksgiving to my LDotter friends! Have a blessed day with your families and friends.
Is it just me or does this Thanksgiving feel just a little different from the others? Does it have a little more significance? Are you thinking about the reason we are so privileged to live in this great country? I know I am. We are definitely having some pretty trying times but today I feel so thankful for this country and my fellow Patriots. There is something about hardship that makes you feel thankful. Although there seems to be a cloud of dread hanging over this country, and each day brings another outrage, I find myself looking for answers vertically more often than horizontally. I find myself more grateful to God for what I have and why I am so blessed. Thanks to this site, I know I am not alone. There are families just like mine who will come together and laugh, tease each other, and try and control the chaos that is always a part of this day. We will prepare a meal together, gather around a bountiful table and say Grace. Then we will go around the table and tell everyone what we are thankful for which will bring a few tears and lots and lots of laughter. We will miss the ones no longer with us and share precious memories of them. It is truly a precious time all because a few courageous people defied all the odds and landed in this beautiful land to begin the great American experiment. They didn’t have an easy time of it but ultimately they survived and started a tradition of thanking God for his provision and blessing despite the trials they experienced. Today we continue that tradition with a more thoughtful heart than usual because we realize that the values these brave adventurers brought with them must be defended or they will be lost. As we look back, we will find the very traits we need for our future, perseverance, a strong faith in God, and the worth of like minded friends and neighbors. I am so grateful for each and everyone of you and the insight you bring to my life. Thank you! And a special thank you to Miss Lucianne who makes this island of sanity in this mad world possible.

This Thanksgiving I am particularly thankful that I was fortunate enough to have immigrated to America, become a proud citizen here, and enjoyed the blessings and unparalleled freedoms of this greatest country on Earth. All those like me love and appreciate this country for its goodness and generosity and not just its economic rewards and benefits.
We are also acutely aware of the lies and distortions being promoted now by those who despise this country and are attempting to "transform" it into the kind of hell we immigrated from. Though they feel they are in the ascendancy now, in the end, they will fail. They will fail because unlike many who were born here and don't fully understand what the intended "transformation" is really like. We do.
This is the last, best place on Earth. We give thanks to almighty God for truly delivering us from evil to this blessed place, and if nobody else will defend it, we will.

Thanks for the thoughtful post and Inspiring messages from fellow LDotters! As I sit in my warm home gazing out the window at a frosted field of grazing cattle rimmed with tall trees the words of the great hymn "How Great Thou Art" play over and over in my mind. Truly thankful this day for God's grace and provision.

Having traveled extensively during my working career and having seen the misery that a large segment of the world's population must endure each and every day where their freedom is meager at best, yes, I am thankful to be an American. Manning's piece puts the pilgrimage in proper perspective. How far we have come since that first winter of 1623.
Here at L.com, we are most fortunate to be able to share information and insights about world and domestic affairs with each other. And we respectfully share differences in opinion, I might add. As I have done in the past, I will send around at the end of the year a thank you to as many of you as I can remember for your wisdom, reason, and common sense. Great Americans, you are.
Happy Thanksgiving, all, and in particular, to Lucianne and her staff who continue to work tirelessly to keep our salon running and available for all of us.

Wasn't Thanksgiving Day mainly just an American holiday? It was always special in our home when I was growing up. Mom's family and Dad's family all at one meal. We had a ''kid's table'' close to the main dining table. And card tables in 2 other rooms. Late afternoon was for getting the Christmas tree into the house.

Believe it or not about 12% of Americans can trace their roots to the Pilgrims.

Thank you to #s 4 and 5 for your comments. As I'm getting older I find that my gratitude to God has really increased and I also realized that I feel closer to Him now than I did when I was younger. I've become more aware of how well He watches over me and provides for me.
I thank Him every day for that. He has also given me a huge burden to pray for our country and that is why I think He has a good plan in store for us. Even though there is so much chaos and violence in the country right now, I
know He sees everything and is in control of everything. I am confident that at some point He will step in and render some much needed justice to those whose goal is to destroy us.
