Sometimes you want to hear from the strategists rather than the candidate. With all due respect to Governor-elect Glenn Youngkin — who, for a first-timer from the world of high finance, proved to be remarkably disciplined on the stump (few verbal missteps) and surprisingly motivational to Republicans (record turnout) — he's not all that interesting. What is interesting is how he won. How did his campaign win a state by two points one year after his party lost it by 10 points? How did his strategists view Fox News and Twitter, where a funhouse mirror version of the race often played out?

Liberal Politico and Ryan Lizza are not my go-tos for analysis. What do you suppose are Lizza’s criteria for “interesting”?
Drivel.

This is "must read" material, especially for the red meat purveyors who demand loud and proud allegiance to all things Trump.
FTA: 44 percent of [Virginia voters] care about who [Trump] supports or opposes, [and] will act based on his endorsement — pro or con." It's no different nationally.
The point the strategists make again and again is for candidates to be themselves, to create their own brand, and to connect with all voters on that basis. That may upset some, but the question is whether they want to win elections, particularly in other than deep red jurisdictions.

I was disgusted by hearing Kevin McCarthy and the other morons of the Pubbie Party pony up to the microphone to claim that NOW THEY CAN WIN. They want to hijack Youngkin’s win, destroy it, and continue losing even with the majority of the nation looking for a way out of this hellish nightmare that they permitted to begin with.
The whole lousy lot of them has to go to have any real change. McConnell, Sasse, McCarthy.. every Let’sing one of them need to be sent packing.

There are few strategists I want to hear from. Their opinions to me are approximately equal to pollsters and celebrities.
Report what is, not what your tea leaves tell you. I will decide on my own.

PS. It is possible to admire and support President Trump and also admire a Glenn Youngkin. The two POVs are not mutually exclusive. Now, if Youngkin continues to be a Romney supporter, and turns out to be just another Uniparty hack, that could change. Has nothing to do with personality. Unlike the lockstep #NeverTrumpers, there are many individual thinkers in our country who admire and support a person because of what he does, not what he says. Or whether he is plain vanilla, white bread, or chili powder. The politics of personality does nothing for our country and its citizens.

The strategists didn't say Youngkin should get rid of Trump. The strategists said Yougkin and other would-be winners of races should be themselves. Youngkin didn't rule Trump in or out. He tried to be his own person. He did for his race what Mr. Trump did for Mr. Trump's races: Youngkin was himself (according to the strategists).
Actually, that is exactly the sort of thing I think Mr. Trump would advise. There is only one Donald John Trump. Anyone else trying to be him would be inauthentic -- a cheap imitation. But be yourself -- and have good ideas -- communicate them well -- be positive. These are all good things.

“He’s not all that interesting”? No, Lizza, maybe not to you. I don’t even recognize the world libs live in.

I am a solid pro-Trumper, but I found this article very interesting.
Yes it's from leftist Politico and the interviewer is a CNN analyst, but he asked good questions. But the interviewees were both very smart people, and this really came out in the article.
We need more strategists like this!

Here we are again..."Campaign Professionals" talking about how the Sausage gets made...and claiming credit for a candidates victory.
NO!
They need to save these kinds of talks to only other campaign professionals, particularly NOT with lefty/Dem outlets like Politico.
These clowns didn't even wait a Day, didn't let the Candidate do interviews first, jumped at the 1st chance they got to pat themselves on the back with the very first Media outlet that asked.(Then in their hubris BRAGGED about their upcoming tactics in a senate race where they are going next)
I have worked in politics for a long time, "The Rule" used to be when victorious to simply say:
"With a great candidate such as this, who really GETS what the People want, winning is pretty easy, and he will be a great(Mayor/legislator/Governor/congressman/senator/President) because the people finally have a voice and a door that is always open to them"
Then wait for the phone calls to come in from other would be candidates just BEGGING for you to come help them do the same.
Putting it out in the public like this? Tacky, short sighted, and ugly....Ego Driven.

Surprising? Sometimes the person is better than the party. Just like Donald Trump, Youngkin is a true leader.

No no no! READ this. And Ron Brownstain’s (/s) article in Atlantic. This is good political science. Ignore the leftist sneering (Youngkin isn’t interesting because he’s religious, was successful in the private sector and doesn’t attend the DC party circuit Lizza lives and dies by). Youngkin could afford to keep Trump close but quiet because he had his own money to spend and now can govern for all the right reasons, just like Trump. We’ll know soon enough if he’s a Romney-ite, but I doubt it. I’m in Virginia Beach and this city has a lot to do with his win. The Edison exit poll, which I participated in, concluded that many of us smart, but not credentialed, non-college graduates were the difference.

Very interesting interview. I feel a bit uneasy about showing the 'playbook' although it was pretty clear to me that the most effective strategy is to adapt the plays to each race.
My question is this. Was it hubris, ignorance, or total indifference to the will of the people by the Dems that created this result?

Interesting overview. The strategists also slap down the interviewer and his pre-conceived notions about the relationship between Trump and Youngkin.
