Joe Biden’s nominee for Comptroller of the Currency in the U.S. Treasury Department is Saule Omarova, a native of Kazakh Soviet Socialist Republic and graduate of Moscow State University, which she attended on a “Lenin Personal Academic Scholarship.” In a May 9, 2020 interview with Chris Hayes of NBC, Omarova revealed she was in an exchange program with the University of Wisconsin in 1991 when the USSR collapsed. (snip) “Say what you will about old USSR, there was no gender pay gap there,” Omarova wrote, “Market doesn’t always ‘know best.’”

Of course there was no gender pay gap in the Soviet Union. Remember the old joke? The people pretended to work and the government pretended to pay them.

From 1985-1994 I was general counsel for three banks and their bank holding company, which owned all three. All were supervised by the Comptroller off the Currency, not the Federal Reserve. I can't tell you the vast array of regulations the Office of Comptroller of the Currency issues and how rigid and punitively their auditors interpret those volumes of regulations. No liberal--and certainly no socialist or communist--should serve in that position. The Comptroller has the broad authority to run banks into the ground if desired. As we enter an era of inflation, bank regulations may very well annihilate the profits of banks large and small.

When Abraham Lincoln spoke the prophetic words "a house divided against itself cannot stand" — in a speech before the Illinois Republican state convention in 1858 — he was a relatively unknown politician. He saw the obvious: North and South were hopelessly divided over the issue of slavery — or more fundamentally, states' rights — and a breakup was all but all but unavoidable. This came to pass in just a few years' time in the form of the Civil War. Is America nearing a similar point in 2021?
