Florida's 1st District Court on Friday reinstated a stay on mask mandates in schools, blocking local school requirements for now, court documents show.
Lawyers for Gov. Ron DeSantis filed the emergency appeal after a judge ruled on Wednesday that the state must stop its enforcement of a mask ban.
The latest court ruling comes amid a showdown between the state and some local school districts that have insisted on requiring students to wear masks as Covid-19 infections surge.
On August 27, Second Circuit Judge John Cooper ruled against DeSantis, allowing Florida schools to institute mask mandates while the case was appealed at a higher level.

Months after a contentious court battle between the world's most valuable company and one of the world's most popular video games, a judge directed Apple to allow developers to use outside payment options, but stopped short of calling Apple a monopoly.
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers of the US District Court in the Northern District of California ruled on Friday that Apple (AAPL) had violated California's Unfair Competition Law by forcing Fortnite and its maker Epic Games to use Apple's payment systems on the App Store, with the iPhone maker extracting a 30% commission on every in-app purchase in the process. She issued an injunction prohibiting Apple from requiring that developers use

An estimated 27,000 mail-in ballots in Georgia were returned as undeliverable by the post office during the 2020 election, according to a research brief by a good-government group. The number is more than double the margin of victory—12,000 votes—by which President Joe Biden won the state.
The new report from the Indianapolis-based Public Interest Legal Foundation (PILF) raises questions about the efficacy of voting-by-mail policies that were hurriedly adopted across the nation in the early days of the pandemic last year, purportedly to arrest the spread of the CCP virus that causes the disease COVID-19.
PILF describes itself as “the nation’s only public interest law firm dedicated wholly to election integrity,”

A U.S. Court of Appeals issued a ruling allowing Indiana to continue enforcing laws that restrict abortions, including telemedicine consultations between doctors and women seeking the procedure.
Reversing an order handed down by District Court Judge Sarah Evans Barker last month, the 7th Circuit Court of Appeals panel, in a 2–1 ruling Wednesday, granted Indiana the right to enforce its laws while the court considers a full appeal of the case.
“Plaintiffs contend, and the district court found, that developments in videoconferencing make it possible to dispense with in-person meetings, that improvements in medicine make the use of hospitals or surgical centers unnecessary, and that nurses are competent to approve and monitor

Powerful people are going to a lot of effort to protect Dr. Anthony Fauci’s reputation, despite mounting evidence of his role in funding dangerous research on bat coronaviruses in the Chinese laboratory believed to be the most likely source of the pandemic.
It is clear that Fauci(snip) misled Congress when he denied that US money had paid for “gain-of-function” research in the Wuhan lab.(snip)
Tinkering with a virus in the lab to make it more infectious to humans is the very definition of “gain-of-function” research, as stated by the US Department of Health and Human Services: “Research that improves the ability of a pathogen to cause disease.”

The latest media reports highlight as part of the White House ‘Build Back Better‘ campaign, the installed occupant of the White House will announce a mandatory vaccine policy for all federal workers and contractors today at 5:00pm.
WASHINGTON, DC – President Biden on Thursday will announce a requirement that all federal workers be vaccinated against COVID-19, according to a source familiar with the plans.
The action goes a step further than what Biden announced earlier this summer, when federal workers had the option of being tested regularly instead of getting vaccinated.
The tightening vaccine requirement for federal workers comes as the Biden administration is stepping up its encouragement of vaccine mandates in the

United Airlines employees who are granted a medical or religious exemption have been informed that they’ll be automatically placed on unpaid leave, a policy that one expert described as the harshest in America.
In memorandums to workers who have applied for an exemption to United’s COVID-19 vaccination mandate, workers were told that they must become fully vaccinated against the virus that causes COVID-19 within five weeks if their submission is denied or they will “be separated from the company.”
Employees whose accommodation requests are granted will be placed on leave for an undetermined amount of time, the memos, obtained by The Epoch Times, added.

The Russian evolutionary anthropologist Peter Turchin coined the term “elite overproduction” to describe the condition of a society that is producing too many potential elite members.(snipHis choice of terms is a bit misleading, as his description of elite overproduction in America is better understood as an overproduction of people who see themselves as potential elites, despite being mediocrities.(snip)Turchin’s argument is aided by present reality. British Prime Minister Boris Johnson announced on Tuesday he is raising taxes to pay for the cost of care for the elderly and disabled people, breaking a key election pledge.
In a statement to the House of Commons, Johnson announced a new UK-wide 1.25 percent health and social care levy, which is based on National Insurance contributions.
The move has been controversial even in his own party, as it goes against a pledge Johnson personally made in the Conservative Party’s election manifesto in 2019, in which he promised not to raise income tax, VAT, or National Insurance.

The Taliban is blocking Americans from leaving Afghanistan because the U.S. citizens don’t have proper credentials, U.S. Secretary of State Antony Blinken claimed on Tuesday.
A top Republican in Congress said Sunday that the Taliban was blocking Americans from leaving an airport in Mazar-i-Sharif in northern Afghanistan.(snip)“One of the challenges has been that, as we understand it, there are groups of people who are grouped together, some of whom have the appropriate travel documents—an American passport, a green card, a visa—and others do not. And it’s my understanding that the Taliban has not denied exit to anyone holding a valid document. But they have said that those without valid documents
