To adapt a lyric from one of his band’s biggest hits: You gotta keep ’em vaccinated. Pete Parada, drummer for the veteran rock band the Offspring, has been booted from the group after refusing to get the COVID-19 vaccine due to a pre-existing medical condition.(Snip)He went on to explain that throughout his childhood, he suffered from several rounds of Guillain-Barre syndrome and doesn’t want to risk triggering another bout with the vaccine. GBS is a rare disorder in which the “body’s immune system attacks your nerves [causing] weakness and tingling in your extremities,” according to the Mayo Clinic.

Oh, deer—Bambi never had these problems. There’s new evidence that wildlife are a potential breeding ground for COVID-19, where it could continue to evolve despite control efforts in humans. Between January and March 2021, the U.S. Department of Agriculture tested 385 white-tailed deer found throughout the states of Michigan, Illinois, New York and Pennsylvania, where they detected antibodies for SARS-CoV-2 in 40% of the population, both National Geographic and Nature reported on Monday. An additional three samples from January 2020 also showed antibodies.(Snip)Their new report, available to read on bioRxiv while awaiting peer-review, also said the infected deer appeared to be asymptomatic.

Brooklyn-based “rockstar butcher” Fleisher’s has been forced to close its stores because dozens of workers reportedly walked off the job after the CEO removed Black Lives Matter and LGBTQ pride signs that employees had put in the storefront windows. The company’s website says all of its locations, its two stores in New York City and two others in Connecticut, are “temporarily closed.” A notice at Fleisher’s Upper East Side shop said the store won’t reopen until at least the end of August. The beef between workers and management began last month, when Rob Rosania, a leading investor in the butcher, received a text from a pal

All Prince Harry’s missing is a red clown nose. The redheaded royal can be seen attempting to juggle in the background of Meghan Markle’s 40th birthday video with Melissa McCarthy, during which they promote the Duchess of Sussex’s new philanthropic venture with her and Harry’s foundation, Archewell. At first, Harry, 36, stumbles with the balls and appears to fall over in the backyard of the couple’s California home. But then, he succeeds in his attempt at clownery and runs off the screen in excitement. Neither Markle nor McCarthy, 50, can contain their laughter over Harry’s silliness.

The mayor of Boston said the city won’t be following New York’s lead requiring proof of vaccination at many indoor businesses, claiming the move is reminiscent of “slavery” and birtherism. Acting Mayor Kim Janey—the first woman and black Bostonian to hold the office—said “there’s a long history” in the United States of people “needing to show their papers” when asked Tuesday about the mandate unveiled earlier in the day by Mayor Bill de Blasio that requires proof of vaccination to enter indoor restaurants, entertainment venues and gyms starting on Sept. 13. “During slavery, post-slavery, as recent as, you know, what the immigrant population has

U.S. Civil Rights Commissioner Peter Kirsanow on Tuesday urged Portland to reconsider its decision to funnel millions in stimulus funding to “artists of color,” warning that distributing federal dollars based on race violates civil-rights laws. In a letter to Portland Mayor Ted Wheeler, Mr. Kirsanow asked why a city determined to eradicate “systemic racism” would designate $2 million of $63.8 million received under American Rescue Plan Act to “Relief and Recovery for Artists of Color.”(Snip)The city council agreed last week on a plan for spending the federal dollars, the largest slice of which goes toward creating six homeless villages at a cost of $35.6 million

The Yankees’ rotation has taken a double-barreled hit from COVID-19.
A day after Gerrit Cole tested positive for the virus, Jordan Montgomery also tested positive, manager Aaron Boone revealed Tuesday before the Yankees hosted the Orioles in The Bronx. Boone said no other players would be unavailable because of contact tracing, as of Tuesday afternoon, and “the hope” was that the spread would be contained to Cole and Montgomery, unlike the two other outbreaks the Yankees have experienced this season. Both pitchers, who are vaccinated, are expected to be out at least 10 days—unless they test negative twice before then

A federal judge issued a temporary restraining order on Texas Tuesday, blocking Gov. Greg Abbott’s latest get-tough border policy aimed at preventing illegal immigrants from dispersing throughout his state.
Judge Kathleen Cardone, a Bush appointee to the bench, said Texas was interfering with the way the federal government wanted to carry out its immigration policy. The two-page ruling is a victory for President Biden and Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas, giving them a continued free hand in catching and releasing tens of thousands of illegal immigrants each month. Mr. Abbott had said he feared the migrants were spurring a COVID surge, and he flexed state powers

Joy Behar wants to know whether Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis can be accused of “negligent homicide” for his rejection of COVID-19 mask mandates. The co-host of ABC’s “The View” exploded on the Republican’s continued opposition to government mandates regarding the contagion while blaming him for hospitalized children. “This sociopath, this dangerous criminal, he tells schools that they will rescind funding if they insist upon a mask mandate,” Ms. Behar said Tuesday. “So now the Broward County school board says you don’t have to wear a mask.(Snip)Ms. Behar then framed Florida’s resistance to COVID-19 mask mandates as a result of “white supremacist” thought.
