HELENA Mont. — A grizzly bear attacked and killed a bicyclist who was camping in a small western Montana town early Tuesday, triggering an intensive search for the bruin by wildlife officials and law enforcement officers who planned to kill the animal, authorities said. The pre-dawn attack happened in Ovando, a town of fewer than 100 people about 60 miles (97 kilometers) northwest of Helena, said Greg Lemon, a spokesperson with Montana Fish Wildlife and Parks. The bear had previously wandered into the area where the victim was camping and left but later returned, Powell County Sheriff Gavin Roselles said.

This reminds me of the exceedingly scary movie “Backcountry” about a couple camping in a remote part of Canada.

I am so glad to know that I am not the only one annoyed by these bicycle riders. How come I can't shoot them, but bears can eat them? UNFAIR! Now I know why we see so few bicycle riders in Alaska. I didn't know this law of nature existed.

When you go into those areas you had better be armed & carrying the right firepower.

Grizzlies (7'or so) are more aggressive and much bigger than black bears. But Kodiaks and Polar bears are the most ferocious of all, enormous and fast; they grow up to 8' and 9' tall, The Kodiak's paws can measure in at 9" with 3" to 5" CLAWS and the Polar bear has paws around 12"! Many years ago a sporting goods store in Massachusetts had a stuffed Kodiak and he was frightening in THAT condition. I can't imagine what terrors are experienced tangling with a real bear, whatever the size.
There's another very suspenseful movie about a bear gone bloodthirsty for humans, "The Edge" (1997), with Anthony Hopkins and Alec Baldwin (when he could act, in my opinion) and a Kodiak bear.
It does seem that the grizzly surveilled the camp site. Mauled to death by a bear is horrific. Sympathies to the family of the man in this news story

This was a group of bikers riding together? The biker interviewed sounded like an idiot - a person who was camping near him has been killed - and that afternoon he says “I think we’ll be OK going north" (into more bear country) Jim Drake of Las Cruces, New Mexico.... “We carry bear spray and keep our food in a bear-proof bag. Bears are always a threat, but as long as we take precautions, we’re not too worried. I think we’re more likely to be hit by a car than attacked by a bear."

Black bears ... get as big as possible and scream as loud as you can.
Grizzly bears ... climb a tree or play dead ... and pray.
Polar bears ... have your affairs in order and get ready for a very nasty death.

Yes #6 "We carry bear spray and keep our food in a bear-proof bag. Bears are always a threat, but as long as we take precautions, we’re not too worried. I think we’re more likely to be hit by a car than attacked by a bear,”
Lets see the record on being hit by cars v attacked by bears on this trip, in light of your super cool precautions. Bear 1 Cars 0
No where does he say anyone is carrying a minimum .44 Magnum.

The funny thing about the movie Back Country is that while its based on a true story, its not accurate. In the movie, the man is mauled and the woman basically saves them from the bear. In reality, the roles were reversed. The man is the hero, saving the couple

They do that sometimes... They're wild. Grizzly bears, like Honey Badgers... don't care.

Well #2, anything that "annoys" you should immediately be banned.
That this person was a cyclist is irrelevant. It's camping near grizzly bears that should be questioned.

A few years back, a grizzly bear in Alaska killed a man who got too close (the authorities found pictures on his cell phone). When they finally found and killed the bear sometime later, they found that it had been shot several times, but still able to kill. In order to kill a bear that is charging you, you have to wait until they're close and shoot them in the face. In Alaska, they tell you to save your final bullet to kill yourself.

A wild animal. a predator, acts naturally and kills someone. It's grab the guns and hunt him down. If only law enforcement was this concerned when a human kills another human.

In 2003 the Bear Whisperer Timothy Treadwell managed to get himself and his girlfriend eaten by Kodiak bears, the largest brown--grizzly--bears on earth, growing to perhaps 1,500 pounds. Yuge ba'ar. Needless to say, all bears are potentially dangerous.
As others have said above, polar bears, the largest of all, regard people as food, a meat source to be killed and consumed immediately. End of story. If you're in the polar north, you'd better be prepared with a big bore rifle. The minimum caliber for rogue elephants, .375 H&H, would probably suffice. I wouldn't want less than that if I lived in the remote Alaskan town Kaktovik on the Arctic Ocean.
Brown bears probably don't consider us as a food source, but they're extremely well equipped in case one decides to take advantage of an easy hot meal. Alaskan Ballistics has an interesting 22 minute video on the Ten Best Bear Guns. Incidentally, .357 Magnum doesn't even make the cut, and .44 Magnum barely makes it at #10. Faced with a large brown bear, you want a lot of gun. In a handgun .454 Casull is best, the round has taken Cape buffalo in Africa. The 10mm is gaining popularity because it's far more shootable. Sixteen rounds of hard cast ammo in a Glock 20 is more effective than a huge revolver, which has too much recoil to get more than one round on target.
Black bears are abundant about a hour north of Tampa. One was recently trapped in Safety Harbor, just east of Clearwater forty miles out of its range. They're coming here, too. One leading researcher on bears and bear attacks said that although black bear attacks are less common than attacks by brown bears, black bears are more likely than brown bears to finish off an attack and kill the person. Brown bears cause horrific injuries when one, say, bites a camper's scalp off and leaves. Just don't get too close to these apex predators.

After the terrorist attacks of September 11, 2001 entire fleets of airplanes were grounded, and a group of hunters in Alaska suddenly didn't have a flight back from the bush. They were marooned for several chilly days, not knowing when they would be rescued, or if. A couple of days into their ordeal a brown bear took note of them and charged the group of hunters from 100 yards away. (Bears can run 35 mph for miles at a time. You won't outrun one.) Six hunters oped up with their .30-06s, their .308 Winchesters, .300 Win Mags, etc. The bear made it all the way to where the hunters were standing and shooting. The bear expired at their feet with seven bullets in him. And yet the bear almost got them anyway.
They'd have done better with, instead of regular hunting rifles, a few AR-10s in .338 Federal with twenty rounds in the magazine. A charging bear can close distance rapidly.

I read somewhere else that the camper was a female.
In that case she may have been on her period, which could attract the bear from a pretty long distance.
Learned this in outdoor survival: don't share a tent with a woman on her period. Not chivalrous, I know.
