LONDON — DarkSide, the hacker group behind the recent Colonial Pipeline ransomware attack, received a total of $90 million in bitcoin ransom payments before shutting down last week, according to new research. Colonial Pipeline was hit with a devastating cyberattack earlier this month that forced the company to shut down approximately 5,500 miles of pipeline in the United States, crippling gas delivery systems in Southeastern states. The FBI blamed the attack on DarkSide, a cybercriminal gang believed to be based in Eastern Europe, and Colonial reportedly paid a $5 million ransom to the group. DarkSide operates what’s known as a

Representative Cori Bush's Nigerian faith healer claims he cured her of COVID-19 - simply by the power of prayer over the phone. Charles Ndifon, a Rhode Island-based pastor whose Kingdom Embassy International church claims to be able to cure AIDS and resurrect people from the dead, has long acted as Bush's spiritual guide. Bush, a 44-year-old representative for Missouri, is a local chapter founder member and pastor at the controversial church. On Monday, Ndifon made the bizarre, unfounded claim that he could magically cure worshippers of COVID-19 in just 30 minutes. The 'healer', who believes that illnesses are caused by demons

DENVER – In a unanimous vote on Monday night, Denver City Council passed a bill aimed at reducing the use of plastic utensils, napkins, straws and other single-use accessories. The new ordinance changes Denver’s Revised Municipal Code to require restaurants and third-party delivery platforms to only provide the single-use items upon request. (Snip) The bill aims to reduce waste in order to protect the climate and to promote energy efficiency and environmental sustainability. The International Solid Waste Association estimates that consumption of single-use plastics grew between 250-300% during the pandemic. Whenever Joe Glickman heads out for groceries, he places an N95 mask over his face and tugs a cloth mask on top of it. He then pulls on a pair of goggles. He has used this safety protocol for the past 14 months. It did not change after he contracted the coronavirus last November. It didn’t budge when, earlier this month, he became fully vaccinated. And even though President Biden said on Thursday that fully vaccinated people do not have to wear a mask, Mr. Glickman said he planned to stay the course. In fact, he said, he plans to

Amazon has a goal to get rid of a certain percentage of employees every year - and three managers told Insider they felt so much pressure to meet the goal that they hired people just to fire them: "We might hire people that we know we're going to fire, just to protect the rest of the team," one manager said. The practice is informally called "hire to fire," in which managers hire people, internally or externally, they intend to fire within a year, just to help meet their annual turnover target, called unregretted attrition (URA). A manager's URA target is the

Leading children's authors have hit out at publishers for giving celebrities like Meghan Markle 'whopping advances' on books based on their fame and regardless of the quality of writing. The Duchess of Sussex, 39, announced earlier this month that she has penned her first book The Bench, and said it was inspired by Prince Harry and her son Archie which would explore the 'special bond between father and son' as 'seen through a mother's eyes'. It is not known if Meghan has received an advance for the book and whether any of the proceeds will be donated to charity, a

High unemployment. Rising prices. Gas lines. They're a bad memory for Americans old enough to remember the 1970s - but they're also likely causing a few sleepless nights in the White House, as the United States' economic recovery from the unprecedented coronavirus recession hits some bumps. The jolts are dampening consumer confidence, ramping up inflation fears, and helping Republicans build their case against President Joe Biden and his ambitious plans to revamp the U.S. economy with trillions in new spending. As the 1970s show, high joblessness and rising prices the United States saw in April can be a potent political force.

Ever since Joe Biden floated his $1.9 trillion COVID-relief bill, worrywarts like yours truly have been warning about the possibility of inflation. In case you weren’t alive in the 1970s, inflation erodes the value of money. Simply put, your paycheck is worth less today than it was last week or last month. This demoralizing and frustrating decline in purchasing power can have the psychological effect of causing consumers to spend money quickly, for fear that prices will rise. There is also increased pressure on welfare and wages to keep pace with the rising cost of living. Once this cycle gets

Häagen-Daz ice cream, Special K cereal, and a plethora of fruit and vegetables were always on hand when President Joe Biden lived in the vice president's residence, according to The New York Times. But the one food item you wouldn't see at an official event? Leafy greens. In a new report detailing the Democratic president's first few months settling into the White House, The Times reported Biden put the kibosh on leafy greens at public events for a precautionary and relatable reason: He didn't want to be photographed with leaves in his teeth. The White House Press Office did not

Wharton professor Jeremy Siegel said inflation could spike to 20% in the next two or three years due to "unprecedented" fiscal and monetary stimulus and an explosion of the US money supply. "I'm predicting here that over the next two, three years, we could easily have 20% inflation with this increase in the money supply," Siegel said in a recent interview with CNBC. (Snip) Siegel noted that the total money supply in the US has gone up almost 30% since the start of the year alone. "That money is not going to disappear. That money is going to find its

The Internal Revenue Service is reviewing the tax returns of 10 million people and will begin issuing additional refunds this week to those who paid too much in taxes for their 2020 unemployment benefits. "The IRS identified over 10 million taxpayers who filed their tax returns prior to the American Rescue Plan of 2021 becoming law in March and is reviewing those tax returns to determine the correct taxable amount of unemployment compensation and tax," the agency said in a statement on Friday. "This could result in a refund, a reduced balance due or no change to tax (no refund
