Stocks slumped on Thursday on a report that President Biden will propose almost doubling the capital gains tax on wealthier people. The Dow Jones Industrial Average fell more than 200 points after Bloomberg reported that Mr. Biden wants to raise the rate to 39.6%, from the highest current rate of 20%. The Nasdaq and S&P 500 indexes also fell. Coupled with an existing surtax on investment income, the proposal means that federal tax rates for investors could be as high as 43.4%, Bloomberg said. The tax hike would be on top of Mr. Biden‘s proposed increases in the corporate tax and the hike for taxpayers earning more than $400,000

A researcher has found that cities that had Black Lives Matter protests saw a significant decrease in police homicides, but also a large overall increase in murders. Travis Campbell, an economics PhD candidate at the University of Massachusetts, published his findings in a recent pre-print study examining the impact of BLM protests on police use-of-force incidents.
His analysis, which is still undergoing peer-review, found that cities with BLM protests had 15 to 20 percent fewer police homicides than expected if the protests had not taken place, equating to 300 fewer police killings nationwide over five years. But, in a revised

Human remains found during a search Wednesday are that of the missing Amish teenager who disappeared in Pennsylvania last summer, officials believe.
Linda Stoltzfoos, 18, was last seen walking home from a church service in the Bird-in-Hand area of Lancaster on on June 21 last year. She never returned home. In December last year Justo Smoker, 34, was charged with criminal homicide. Officials said then that the suspect's DNA was discovered on the victim's stocking, which had been found buried in the woods alongside her bra. Lancaster County DA Heather Adams said Thursday they now believe Stoltzfoos was killed within hours of her kidnap

The government is paying travel costs for sponsors trying to pick up migrant children from shelters, amid the surge of unaccompanied children seeking asylum at the border. The policy underscores the White House’s urgency to get the children out of beleaguered and overcrowded shelters, according to Axios. About 275 minor migrants have been arriving at the southern border from Central America everyday, and about 20,000 are reportedly in federal custody. The US is not turning them away for humanitarian reasons.(Snip) Paying for sponsors to get to the border is a “normal part of the unaccompanied children program’s operations,” Administration for Children and Families officials

The square where George Floyd was murdered by ex-Minnesota cop Derek Chauvin now has a sign with special rules for white people. The placard at the entrance of George Floyd Square in Minnesota calls it “a sacred space for community, public grief, and protest,” telling visitors to “honor the space as a place to connect and grieve as caring humans.” But most of the instructions are listed under five orders “for white people in particular.” “Decenter yourself and come to listen, learn, mourn, and witness,” the first bullet points reads, adding, “Remember you are here to support, not to be supported.” “Be mindful

The US will likely reach a “tipping point” over the next few weeks when supply of the COVID-19 vaccine will outpace those willing to receive it, according to a report released this week. “While timing may differ by state, we estimate that across the U.S. as a whole we will likely reach a tipping point on vaccine enthusiasm in the next 2 to 4 weeks,” the nonprofit Kaiser Family Foundation said in the report published Tuesday. “Once this happens, efforts to encourage vaccination will become much harder, presenting a challenge to reaching the levels of herd immunity that are expected to be needed,” the report said.

Olympia, Wash.–The Washington State Department of Agriculture has reported its first cases of COVID-19 antibodies in dogs. In total, 23 dogs who were part of a University of Washington study, tested positive for COVID-19 antibodies. While other cases of coronavirus in pets have been reported in the U.S., state officials say these are the first reported cases in Washington. The Washington State Department of Health recommends that you avoid contact with your pets if you test positive for COVID-19. If no one else can take care of your pets, wear and mask and wash your hands before interacting with them.

More than two dozen angry protesters swarmed the Oklahoma House of Representatives chamber during a session on Wednesday to demonstrate against several bills that target demonstrators and trans girls. The House and Senate were forced to lock their chambers as the protesters entered the Capitol's House gallery on the fifth floor while lawmakers were in session. Video shows the group chanting 'no justice no peace' and 'Black Lives Matter'. But others heckled legislators, with one screaming 'you are a [expletive] disgrace to the whole country!' One of the bills the group showed up to demonstrate against was a Republican-backed anti-protest bill

NBA star LeBron James called for the Ohio cop who shot dead 16-year-old Ma'Khia Bryant to be held accountable for his actions in a now-deleted tweet on Wednesday. Bryant, a black teenager, was killed by a white Columbus police officer on Tuesday while charging at two people with a knife, sparking more outrage over the continued use of lethal force by cops just moments after former Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin was found guilty on murder and manslaughter charges over the death of George Floyd.
In response to Bryant's death, James, who is consistently outspoken about social justice issues, tweeted: 'You're next. #ACCOUNTABILITY.'

A 52-year-old woman was shot in the head in a broad daylight attack Wednesday in Brooklyn, cops said. The gunfire erupted just before 1 p.m. at St. Marks Place and 4th Avenue in Park Slope, police said. “I heard one shot and knew it was from a gun,” said local bodega cashier, Mohammed Ali.
The 57-year-old man said he ran outside and saw, “a lady lying face-up on the sidewalk and above her eyes was a hole with blood coming out.”(Snip)
“It’s scary. If the bullet hadn’t hit her, I might have been the one hit.”
