Christopher Lasch vs. the Elites of Our Time

With the untimely death of Christopher Lasch in 1994 at the age of 61, America was deprived of one of her most articulate and earnestly plangent social critics. By training, Lasch was an historian of 19th- and 20th-century American culture. For some 30- years, he specialized in anatomizing—exaggerating, some would say—certain “odious facts” about American culture.  Already in 1965, in his widely admired book The New Radicalism in America, 1889-1963, Lasch deplored the “decline of the sense of community” in American society.

Roger Kimball reflects on the brilliant life and times of the indispensable Christopher Lasch.

I hit "antinomian" early on and knew I was in for a rough ride. I think I need to read this, it's gonna take more commitment than I have right now.

#1 - I got half-way. Too much from a dead Lefty that loved communism, but hated the break up of the family and hedonism. Big deal, he found the raunchiness spawned by progressive ideology repugnant and we're supposed to remember him fondly? He still advocated for the end of capitalism resulting in the loss of true social and political freedoms. I find little to admire in that, certainly not enough for such a retrospective.

ONE MORE TIME: "Do your own thing" and "If it feels good, do it" did more harm to American society than most things I can think of. Think about it, the consequences have been devastating. "Do your own thing" is just one more of the left's dividers. UNITED we stand, divided we fall.

Joe Biden’s Gun Control Plan is Really Class Warfare 12 replies

While touring a Michigan assembly plant and meeting with members of the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers last March, then-candidate Joe Biden did not react kindly when pressed on whether he would take guns away from Americans. “You’re full of s***,” he snapped at a construction worker who accused Biden of “actively trying to end our Second Amendment right.” Biden threatened to bash his questioner for insisting that, as a public servant, he ought to be transparent and answerable to the people. “I’m not working for you,” he said angrily. “Don’t be such a horse’s ass.”

After months of speculation, today The Washington Post confirmed that the Biden regime is developing a “vaccine passport” that Americans may need to present to prove they have received their COVID-19 vaccine before they will be allowed to engage in commerce in a “return to normalcy” that looks nothing like the past.(Snip)The left wing newspaper also believes that the vaccines can be used to bully skeptical Americans into taking the controversial vaccines.(Snip)However, the Biden regime apparently wants this pressure to come entirely in the form of corporate interests requiring vaccines, and does not want to use the weight of the federal government to require the vaccine passports.

CDC director Dr. Rochelle Walensky became emotional at a White House coronavirus press briefing on Monday—her voice breaking as she warned that the US is facing “impending doom” as COVID-19 cases rise again. “I’m gonna lose the script and I’m going to reflect on the recurring feeling I have of impending doom,” Walensky told reporters at the briefing. “We have so much to look forward to, so much promise and potential of where we are, and so much reason for hope. But right now I’m scared.” “I know what it’s like as a physician to stand in that patient room, gowned, gloved,

President Biden announced a plan on Monday to spur development of large offshore wind farms to generate electricity for up to 10 million homes and reduce greenhouse gas emissions. White House press secretary Jen Psaki said the plan envisions large windmills along every coast of the continental U.S. She said it will eventually produce “tens of thousands of good-paying union jobs.” “The president recognizes that a thriving offshore wind industry will drive new jobs and economic opportunity up and down the Atlantic Coast, in the Gulf of Mexico and in Pacific waters,” she said. Ms. Psaki also said the initiative will eliminate 78 million

The Biden administration and private firms are reportedly developing a ‘vaccine passport’ that will allow Americans to return to pre-pandemic activities like travel and shopping by showing proof they’ve been inoculated against COVID-19. The ‘vaccine passport’ is considered key to meeting the administration’s goal of emerging from the lockdown and returning to a semblance of normalcy this summer. It will in all likelihood be available for free through smartphones. Vaccinated Americans will be able to flash a scannable code while those who do not have phones could print out a code on a piece of paper, according to The Washington Post.

President Biden called on governors and local leaders to reinstate coronavirus-related mask mandates during a White House briefing Monday, before announcing several other vaccine-related directives. "I’m reiterating my call for every governor, mayor and local leader to maintain and reinstate the mask mandate," Biden said. "Please, this is not politics, reinstate the mandate if you let it down." The call follows actions taken by several states to lift mask requirements earlier this month and ease business restrictions, such as Texas and Mississippi, which drew sharp criticism amid early-stage vaccine rollouts and the spread of highly transmissible coronavirus variants.

The Supreme Court on Monday denied a bid by conservative watchdog group Judicial Watch to uphold a court ruling requiring Hillary Clinton to testify under oath about her private email system. The Supreme Court’s denial was unsigned and issued without comment. In January Judicial Watch filed a petition for writ of certiorari (“cert petition”) with the U.S. Supreme Court asking it to uphold a court ruling requiring Hillary Clinton to testify under oath about her private email system. Hillary Clinton used a private email system to conduct official government business when she was the head of the Department of State.

For years we have been hearing about a coming storm. It was to be biblical and would bring pain to members of the deep state ruling class who, after exposure, would not be able to walk down the streets. The storm was to begin with spygate (snip) Then there were crimes against humanity: child abuse, trafficking, and the like, all to be exposed via the Anthony Weiner laptop or the Jeffrey Epstein cabal (snip) In July of 2020, John Solomon reported, “DOJ activity indicates John Durham preparing indictments.” (snip) The longer this goes on, damaging and socializing the country, the harder it will be to stop or reverse.

George Floyd popped “what are thought to be two Percocet pills” before his fatal encounter with police, the lawyer for ex-Minneapolis cop Derek Chauvin said at his murder trial Monday. Defense lawyer Eric Nelson said during opening arguments that Floyd’s pals told police that they had trouble waking him up after he took the drugs on May 25, 2020, the day he died while in police custody. “Mr. Floyd’s friends will explain that Mr. Floyd fell asleep in the car and that they couldn’t wake him up to get going,” Nelson told the jury. “They thought police might be coming.”

I recently wrote a column wherein I accused the American Left and its wholly owned subsidiary, the Democrat party, of using Fascist or Nazi tactics in their determination to permanently transform the nation into a one-party hybrid socialist state by exploiting nonexistent “systemic racism” and baseless fears of “white supremacy.” This characterization did not set well with the gullible and self-righteous Democrat voters I know (snip) any thoughtful and unemotional examination of the tactics the Nazi Party used to gain and maintain power in the 1920’s and 30’s will reveal numerous stark similarities to those being used by the left and the Democrat Party today.
