In those days Caesar Augustus issued a decree that a census should be taken of the entire Roman world. (This was the first census that took place while Quirinius was governor of Syria.) And everyone went to their own town to register. So Joseph also went up from the town of Nazareth in Galilee to Judea, to Bethlehem the town of David, because he belonged to the house and line of David. He went there to register with Mary, who was pledged to be married to him and was expecting a child. While they were there, the time came for the baby to be born, and she gave birth to her firstborn, a son.

Today we celebrate the birth of Jesus Christ. The greatest gift of all. So why do people dishonor him so much by their behavior? It is a slap in the face for them to turn their backs on him and refuse to follow his teachings. Then once a year they celebrate his birth by giving each other gifts. Where is his gift? Where are the gifts for our Lord Jesus Christ? Where are the sincere words in praise of him?

For years I wondered why people from the North went UP to Jerusalem or Bethlehem, which was in the South.
But then I went there and found Jerusalem at a higher elevation along with Bethlehem.
Oh..I said.

I always liked hearing these passages in the King James version. Some of the words and phrases may sound outdated but they are beautiful language. And the angel said unto them, Fear not: for, behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy, which shall be to all people. For unto you is born this day in the city of David a Saviour, which is Christ the Lord.

Yes, #3, the King James Version has a majesty in rhythms that surpasses the more recent translations. I go back to it for many passages.
One of the most pitiful translations I've ever heard was read in a church presentation about The Annunciation. In that version, the angel Gabriel said, "Mary, I've got a surprise for you." Not kidding.
Yes, again, the KJV has a sound that no other translation can match.

The story of the birth of Christ has been so manipulated by rulers and clergy hundreds of years after his death, it's difficult to know what is correct. Even the time of the year in December has been proven to be wrong. Some scholars believe the birth really took place in March or April, and that the real birth place was in Nazareth. Hence him being called Jesus of Nazareth, and not Jesus of Bethlehem. The only thing that's not disputed, is the impact this one person has had on the world.

Facts of Jesus' birth most don't know:
1) He was not visited by "wise men" in the manger. Jesus was between 2 and 3 years old when they arrived and Herod destroyed all male children in that age range.
2) The "celestial event" that guided the "wise men" did not necessarily involve any star or planets. God manifest Himself to Israel over hundreds of years as the "Shekinah Glory."
3) God promised King David an heir who would rule over Israel forever. This was the Davidic Promise, and even though the male line of David died out under the Zephaniah curse, God in His grace was able to grant David's promise through Mary, who was in David's line AND under the Jewish law of racial identification through the mother, and Joseph, also in the line of David, through the Jewish custom of "adoption" which conferred upon a male all of the rights of primogeniture. So Jesus WAS Joseph's heir even though the Apostle James was His half-brother.
4) The Shepherds were keeping their flocks in perhaps the very same fields as did the young Shepherd, and eventual slayer of Goliath, David.
5) The Angel of the Lord brought the "good news" in Luke 2 to the Shepherds in the field. At the time of Christ's birth the Pharisees and religious rulers had established that Shepherds were "ceremonially unclean" and could NOT enter the Temple, as other Jews could do, to conduct their mandated Temple sacrifices. Ironic when one considers that young Shepherd David saved his nation by slaying Goliath, but would have been unable to enter the Temple.
6) We don't know how many "wise men" came to give gifts to the toddler, Jesus, but the plural means more than two. As possible emissaries of a great King, in Persia or Babylonia, they would have brought much in the way of valuables. They would have travelled in a large caravan with attendant soldiers to protect them along the way. This is why they attracted so much attention and caused Herod to be extremely jealous. The 3 gifts mentioned each have rich symbolism in those times, as Gold for a King, Frankincense was very costly and used as a sweet fragrance to honor God, and associated with a High Priest. Myrrh was a very expensive salve for embalming the dead. Whichever King sent these gifts was more aware of the significance and prophecy of the Messiah and Savior than were most of the Jewish religious leaders. Our Great King, High Priest, and Sacrifice for Sin.
7) Jesus would later (around age 30) perform miracles that had not been seen in Israel for over 400 years. That alone should have been a wake up call to Jewish religious leaders, but they rejected Him at every turn.
