Saoirse Roisin Kennedy-Hill has been identified as the young woman who died of a possible drug overdose at the Kennedy Compound on Cape Cod. She was 22 years old. 'Our hearts are shattered by the loss of our beloved Saoirse,' the Kennedy family said in a statement. 'Her life was filled with hope, promise and love.' The statement quoted Saoirse's grandmother, Ethel Kennedy, as saying: 'The world is a little less beautiful today.' Paramedics responding to a call of a suspected overdose just after 2.30pm Thursday arrived at the scene and found the patient in cardiac arrest. The woman was transported to Cape Cod Hospital,

Sad, but it seems that the Kennedys have been drug and alcohol addicted across at least 3 or 4 generations, creating their own misery, regardless of their money and positions.
Sad.

Drug overdoses, drownings, airplane crashes, and assassinations. Such is life within this family of privilege.

I'm mystified why someone born so privileged would turn to drugs at such a young age.

Please read the whole article, particularly her essay down toward the end. She was suffering with what the article calls "depression and mental illness" since high school, a very typical time of onset. Winston Churchill called his depression "the black dog." He was diagnosed by his personal doctor as manic depressive (bipolar). Lincoln called it "my melancholy." So very sad. And really, there isn't much help for the black hole of lifelong clinical depression. Drugs are trial and error, and a good psychiatric hospital with competent staff is hard to find. Ditto a good psychiatrist and psychologist.

The Kennedy Curse is simple alcoholism and drug addiction. They are no different than most families in the country. None of them will seek recovery. No matter how many die from the disease, it is not enough for the rest to surrender.

A strong streak of mental illness and addiction--to alcohol, sex, and drugs--runs in this family. From JFK's and his son's risk taking recklessness to Ted's and Joan's alcoholism to Joe III's abuse of women, so much of this is genetic and the privilege doesn't help. This girl didn't have much of a chance. You have to admire Patrick Kennedy for so far a successful battle with his demons and his mental health advocacy.

So why is this news?
They are no better or worse than many other Americans who have these problems.
When will the Kennedys, and Clintons, just go away?

That's an unwarranted comment, #11. There are some LDotters out here who have lost family members to drugs. And they weren't low-life scum.

As a mother of a child who suffers fibromyalgia/depression/anxiety/ADD my heart hurts for the mother and father of this child. Drugs not prescribed to treat these ailments are often a way for the patient to self-medicate and fight back, but like all of that, become a sickness itself. Saoirse is correct: mental illness isnt something to be mocked or blown off as something that is passing. We should be building each other up. As Saiorse pointed out in her article, just because you can't see it doesn't mean it isn't a problem. Hope should be passed around freely and lavishly, not sequestered or just used in crisis situations. Im sure the parents of this beautiful young woman are in a place of devastation only a few of us can understand. I don't care if they were part of the Kennedy family. They deserve our prayers and our empathy. As do all who suffer depression, even if they are kids.
Every time someone succumbs to this, it is a call to the rest of us to open up ways to strengthening the fight against it.

Tragedy for sure. But this family is frightening to me; I’m just glad i never had to know or encounter any of them. The old man was pathological and tetty and jfk as well. Somehow they never created anything good. Yes sad, but there was so much wrong from the beginning. And it has to be foisted on us as news.

Depression among the Irish, I have read, is higher than the other parts of the world.Irish poets demonstrate that. If that is correct, this girl had a lot of Irish in her, and couldn't cope with it.
I have to wonder if the drugs that killed her were prescribed for her depression.

#18 I would say it is a three way tie between the Irish, the Finns and the Russians. Her parents must be devastated.
