Many political junkies still remember Lee Atwater who died 28 years ago from a brain tumor on March 29, 1991. While the passing of the fiery political operative and former GOP national chairman remains largely un-commemorated, an event this past year with Atwater’s fellow South Carolinian Lindsey Graham echoes Atwater’s fearlessness on the political stage. Senator Graham reportedly is preparing a counter-investigation into Democrats in the wake of President Trump being absolved of any Russian collusion. Lee Atwater cut his teeth in the campaigns of South Carolina politicians such as Strom Thurmond.

Lee Atwater was a hero. He despised democrats and called them out for what they are. He was reviled by the media eltite but he won elections and properly saw democrats as the enemies of freedom.

Start with the FISA warrant applicants and their co-conspirators.

Lee Atwater´s "big tent" had unintended consequences--
The "rock ribbed" conservatives Reagan brought to places of stature became supplanted by the Bushies and their moderate, Rockefeller republicans who thought big spending and big govenment was O.K. as long a republicans were in charge.
We can see the results of the RINOs, many of whom have turned into RINOcrats or demonrat socialists-lite because we have now ABANDONED and abdicated fiscal policy, national border security, and standing for traditional positions on LIMITED government.
Rather than bring things together, we are now pulling apart rather than finding agreement on basic republican principles and are at war with each other.

Agree with Op Comment.
Senator Graham is trying to do something constructive and is on the Trump Train 85% of the time. That´s more then other GOP bench sitting senator.
Also, I remember him during the Clinton impeachment ... he was relentless in his pursuit. Lindsey will be a tough Judiciary Chairman as he counter investigates the collusion debacle the Democrats manufactured and foisted upon this country.
This will be legacy time for him.
Go Lindsey!

One trusts Lindsey Graham at their own risk. He is running for president as the MAGA Man in case Trump doesn´t make it to the 2020 trail. Then it´s him and Mitt...off to the primary races.

For whatever reason, I just can´t bring myself to totally trust him and I hope I´m wrong. He was McLames lapdog for quite a while and I just can´t get past that as quickly as others. Again, I hope I´m wrong and he hangs every one of those stinking, lying Rats. None of that ´´It´s time to put this behind us and move on´´ crap´´ that the Republicans are famous for.
Hang ´em high!

Remember Graham, in total disgust, at the Kavanaugh hearings. "I hope you never get power!" That was to his colleagues (and to my mind, the Media as well) who threw the rule of law to the curb in order to smear a decent man. And that was probably bush league as they had also been going after an elected President.

Do NOT trust Lindsey Graham. He has a lot to prove before he deserves to be trusted or given the benefit of the doubt. Never forget the old Lindsey until we have a true bonafide Lindsey in our midst. He´s been up and down, left and right, stuck in the middle (oops! I hear a song) for too long. At this point, he needs to be consistently right, in my opinion, until he dies. We don´t want kabuki theater from him, we want results. If he can´t put up, he needs to shut up. I´m a SC voter, so I can attest to some of the frustration with him.

You don´t have to trust him to appreciate the good moves he makes and his fiery rhetoric. It´s not that common to get a fighter in the GOP -- be grateful while it lasts, however long that is, and don´t be so superior and cynical that you hurt our cause.

Graham wants power, but is unable to attract a following because he is weak and unprincipled. Graham´s power is reflected power, and he will go with the way the winds of power are blowing. Graham has done nothing, but talk, and that is all he has done on the "getting to the bottom" of FISA abuse, or anything else. No hearings, no subpoenas, just appearances on Sunday mornings. Yesterday, Hannity asked Graham what he was going to do, and Graham did not answer directly, instead listing the questions he wanted answered. The deflection was noticed.

Lindsey talks a good game when he has a football squad or two backing him up but I haven´t seen much action. He did let the Kavanaugh detractors have it pretty harshly but the whole of Congress will never be forgiven for sitting on the sidelines while the Obamanation ran roughshod over the country. A couple of good statesmen could have scolded Barry to the point of embarrassment but it never once happened.

I trust someone who is 80% with someone more than someone who is 100% with someone in politics. No one is 100% right especially in politics. I believe Graham is more honest than most of the other senators.

I´m proud of Graham, he´s doing what I thought Cruz, Cotton & Lee would do & didn´t. Sad & disappointing. At one time I thought Cruz & Cotton would be the leaders of the party, something went wrong. McConnell stood up in the senate yesterday & defended Trump so there is hope. Sorry but no one is 100% so I´ll take Graham, at least he´s requesting a special council for Obamas WH, the JD, Hillarys campaign & what & who started the special council against President Trump. Go Graham ...I am proud of you!!

Those of you who are slamming Graham need to go back to 1998 and look at his actions in the Clinton impeachment trial. He was one of only 3-4 people in all of congress who actually went to the secured office building and read the evidence against Clinton. He was disgusted by what he saw and acted accordingly. He was brilliant in the trial, though the senate voted to acquit Slick.
He is my senator and I sincerely hope that he beefs up his security - it’s not beyond Illary to order an Arkancide when the heat gets too close to her. Just ask Seth Rich.

I support all the good things Graham does recently while I hold my breath waiting for him to attack and not support PT on the odd day. I do not trust him.

Too many years of Graham looking good then bailing for me to think he has changed. I believe he might do an investigation of sorts but will back off just before any meat is exposed.

Agree with #18.I´ll give Senator Graham the benefit of the doubt for now and hope for the best. However I remember how General Kelly kept an eagle eye on him at No Name´s memorial service and he made sure Graham knew it. Graham and Huma hugged as Huma passed something to him. In what universe is that good?

That Lee Atwater was key in electing such pains in the butt as Bush 41 and, to a somewhat lesser degree, Bush 43, does not speak well for Atwater. However, he played a good, solid, form of political hardball, and they WERE the candidates, so he did his best for our side, even when the candidates stunk.
In any case, Graham seems to have been released from whatever sad control nasty RINO John McCain had over him, and is acting a lot more like a real conservative these days. I hope he continues to move back to the right, and remember how to fight.
