Duke University agreed to a deal Monday that will require it to repay the federal government $112.5 million to settle claims it falsified scientific research at taxpayers’ expense. The prestigious school said it will take additional steps on “research integrity” and says it’s already implemented more monitoring of research in the wake of the scandal, which involved a health researcher and her supervisors.(Snip) The chief researcher at the center of the scandal, Erin Potts-Kant, had more than a dozen papers stemming from her work on mice retracted. Prosecutors said the school’s higher-ups knew about her fraudulent research

Duke is loaded. They make that much from broadcasting their basketball games and from the college basketball tournament appearances.

Can you still be "prestigious" when you knowingly have this being done with full knowledge of the school´s "higher ups"?

Right, Duke will ´take steps..´!! They will call up Lori Lauglin if she wants to spend a few dimes to get her daughters into the school.... We can rest assured those girls will promulgate ´research integrity´ 24/7!!

112 million bucks worth of mice!! They should have bought dogs as in children of really rich people. I´d think it would be a better investment in the future.
PS I keep hearing people, politicians especially, talking about investments in the future. As opposed to what? Investments in the past?

The research was paid for by the National Institute of Health and the EPA. Would love to know what exactly was falsified. EPA sounds like Climate Change. No idea regarding the National Institute of Health.

One of my doctors graduated from Duke. I try to tell him about my ailments but he always says "looking good" or blames everything on pollen. It does have a world class hospital and the best basketball coach. But the school I am affiliated with claimed they´d confirmed cold fusion so I won´t cast any aspersions. There is tremendous pressure on university researchers to get huge government contracts. To do that you have to claim to have done something.

Nice reward for the whistleblower. Was the fraudulent researcher one of the faculty who accused the lacrosse team before one shred of evidence was known?

SMU football got the ´death penalty´ for its transgression which were not illegal. Duke, pays a silly little fine and goes about being Duke for committing federal fraud. Federal Fraud! Cheating, if done the ´right´ way, pays. Duke knows how to cheat both in academic fraud and how to screw young white males for the rest of their lives. Duke remindes me of the college version of Hitlery, Comey, Brennan and so many others.

It would be helpful to know more about her research.
That was an enormous amount of money going to one researcher.
Is she still employed by Duke, or did I miss that?

#13 It appears this was discovered only after Mz Potts-Kant was arrested for embezzlement and finally sacked. Much more information here: https://www.sciencemag.org/news/2019/03/duke-university-settles-research-misconduct-lawsuit-1125-million

The utter corruption of these left wing indoctrination centers, ( called colleges) seems to be springing some major leaks in their liberal dams.

It pains me to see my alma mater slide to such depths, but they lost their way a while ago. The extent of faculty and administration support for the phony narrative concerning the Duke Lacrosse players was disgusting.
And recent political events have featured Duke grads such as the evil IRS commissioner John Koskinen, crooked debate moderator John Harwood, "community organizer" and crooked consultant Robert Cramer, and most recently FBI traitor Andrew McCabe.
I do root and support Duke sports and Coach K, but the school has been a disgrace.

Surprised at her photo with a hyphenated name.
It´s not just Duke, there is a lot of scamming for money without a conscience. Honesty is a rare thing today.
Don´t you wish you had majored in grant writing? /s

Tip of the iceberg.
I´d wager that 75% of all taxpayer funded research at universities (and polling organizations) is faked.

Fake research...hmmm, was that Potti one of those inept hires to improve hiring statistics? Definitely a demonrat, that´s for sure. They know how to scam. And why is he still employed at Duke, that bastion of corruption (remember those poor guys unjustly smeared by Duke)?
Why does the goobermint waste free taxpayer money on grants anyway? Grants should be outlawed.

There is no longer such a thing as a prestigious university in America unless you count those that are completely independent and do not accept government grants. The names may be the same as those they held up until diversity and substandard education took over but they have all turned into diploma mills whose profits are in the billions of dollars. The scandal that was just "discovered" has been going on for a long time.
The last statistic I heard was that two percent of college football teams actually do not run in the red so the average student subsidizes football. Penn State was one of those that supported itself.

I´m sure this is the tip of the iceberg. EPA and some of the other scam alphabets in government need some heavy oversight (not Congress), or they just need to be shut down.

Fake Science here was EPA "environmental justice grants" examining the relationship between airborne particulate matter and respiratory illnesses, probably proving the falsity that ethanol does not create smog and trigger the rising numbers of asthma cases seen in recent years, alongside government/Archer Daniels Midland ethanol mandates.
