On Friday’s broadcast of MSNBC’s “Deadline: White House,” Rep. Jim Himes (D-CT) stated that he believes the object downed over Alaska “was unlikely to have been a threat of any kind, even of intelligence gathering,” and was probably something benign and “they just said, given what we just all went through for a week, better to just take this thing down.” He also stated that there was a risk to civilian aircraft from the object and that is a reason for the object being taken down.
Himes said, “I don’t know a lot. The briefing was pretty summary, my understanding, there have been some briefings in D.C. for various committee

Per ABC News it was reported to be floating at the whim of wind, cylindrical, silverfish gray, and with no signs of propulsion.

This object was flying at 40,000 feet. so it was DEFINITELY a major threat to aviation -- commercial jet traffic such as Gulfstream jets often fly up to 45,000 feet (flight level 450).
The bigger passenger and cargo jets generally fly as high as 41,000 feet (flight level 410).
It's safe to say this object didn't have a transponder or TCAS so commercial traffic had no way of avoiding it unless by visual acquisition -- and it was the size of a small car, too small to see very far away, in time to avoid. It was far too small to show up significantly on airborne weather radar carried on airplanes.
It's like putting a minefield in the sky for commercial traffic.

If an aerial object is going to be launched for an internet or other commercial service you would think that the DOD would be informed. If that is a requirement that wasn’t met then shoot it down. If not, then we have no control of our airspace. Explain this to the American people and stop lying. We’re not stupid.

Choice of weapon used to take down the balloon. F-22 or a BB gun from Target? I'd go with the latter to save on fuel costs.

This was just China's way of offering Senile Joe bidet a little "coverage" for obeying their orders and allowing the other real spy balloon to fly over US airspace for over a week and transmit all of its data back to China.
This balloon wasn't doing anything but floating so that Senile Joe could shoot it down to save a little face.

Do not believe a single thing that spews forth from this illegal regime or for that matter from any Government entity including members of Congress and especially the propaganda media. That is where we are at now. We cannot believe anything issued by this oppressive Government. Period.

The threat was to this administration's gossamer credibility. They put it up there SO they could shoot it down. Once exposed as serial liars, none of their lies float for long.

Ha, just like the instantaneous "It was not an act of terrorism" judgment after a bombing or mass shooting. We weren't sure what it was but we shot it down anyway. The rabble will feel better knowing strong, decisive minds are in charge. They take us for fools.

If you don't know what it is and who put it there then you should assume it is a threat and take it down as soon as possible. The USA has enemies in this world, both foreign and domestic.

The Biden Clown Show has just proven that is willing to overreact in the fact of complaints against its actions. Maybe we should start complaining about wasting money, diversity, corruption, an open border, insane energy policy, inflation, lies from the government, abuse of power, etc. We might be able to turn this ship of fools around.

Now that balloons have become a joke and a meme, anybody with a tank of helium and some plastic can start launching them like they were soap bubbles. Then again, "cylindrical and gray" could have been the Goodyear Blimp on the way to Arizona.

"I don't know a lot"...in fact he doesn't "Know" anything, didn't even attend the briefing, his "staff" did....because he and the rest of the congresscritters have the weekend off, again.
My question is...why use a $500,000 sidewinder instead of $50.00 worth of bullets?
I can see the potential argument for using a missile on the 60,000ft one, it was well above normal operations ceiling even for the F22, this one at 40,000ft was low/slow enough to 'go to guns' for sooperdoooper top gun Mavric types
Some years back I remember a parade balloon, a panda, or a penguin I think, getting loose and flying over the great lakes...spotted out the windows of passenger jets, eventually burst, or deflated enough to splash down in Lake Erie.

In World War II there were objects called Barrage Balloons. They just floated along to disrupt aerial bombing assaults.

Re #21. Barrage balloons were tethered, not free floating. The point was the steel cable that tethered them was a good way to slice off a wing of an attacking aircraft as a defensive measure.

the bidenistas already have a pass from the media now they're testing any kind of excuse about this floating object just to condition the people when many more floating objects appear in our air space and it's working

Biden reminds me of the late actor, Leslie Nielson, especially in one of his later movies , I believe Scary Movie 3, where he, as the clueless US president, accidentally runs over and kills friendly space aliens, then tries to buy their friends off by offering them some cash out of his pocket.

My high flying days date back to the 50's. Tests proved that the shockwave from a Mach 1 airplane near the surface could destroy most objects.
If an F22 passed near a high altitude balloon at Mach 2 would the shockwave collapse or destroy the balloon?

Absolutely pathetic. What is it with this "object" thing. Think about it. This administration is so weak and pathetic it can't even reveal what the object was. A story to make Biden look good after looking like a buffoon last week. We have become the laughing stock of the world. Maybe John Fetterman called it in while he was in one of his trances. Sickening..

I agree! I mean, if china wanted to spy on us dont you think they would use something more modern than a balloon? This thing was probably cover for something else and probably not even from china.
