Restoration work on Notre-Dame Cathedral in Paris is ready to begin. Two years after a devastating fire destroyed the centuries-old roof of the building and sent its spire crashing down, officials on Saturday said work to secure the remains of the structure is complete, Reuters reported. Carpenters, scaffolding experts, professional climbers, organ mechanics and others took part in the effort to shore up the Gothic landmark, The Associated Press reported. The effort included special temporary structures to secure the iconic towers, vaults and walls of the huge structure, and a special “umbrella” to protect it from the weather.

Comments:

Glad to see this. One of the world's most beautiful buildings.

Very glad that this is moving along. My wife and I did a web check on progress a few weeks ago. We are interested in how it is being repaired, having visited it many times. A favorite memory is visiting Notre Dame de Paris the second time in 1972, IIRC. We just entered and sat to enjoy the ambiance and spend time with eyes adjusting to the light and to view the magnificent architecture. And then someone began to play the organ, apparently a practice session, since the cathedral was nearly empty. It is difficult to describe how magnificent the sound was in that ancient and beautiful cathedral, but it was amazing. The acoustics there are just incredible. A memory of a lifetime, for certain. I never heard the organ play again, just lucky timing. I was so angry and upset when it was burned. I truly think a Muslim worker set the fire intentionally. No evidence, but we had been up in the attic area on the way to the towers a year or so before, and it didn't look like there was any flammable material around, just huge oak beams. Nothing that would easily light off.

I hope that they have increased security. Such a beautiful building but it will be a target for more attacks. The French have ruined much of France by importing savages.

Let's hope the new group of workers were carefully selected based on their respect for the cathedral and the religion practiced there. This fire happened during a series of similar fires started by you-know-who.

Probably my favorite place in my favorite city in the world. Never missed stopping by to light some candles and say some prayers when passing through. That picture still brings tears to my eyes.

I've never been to Notre Dame, never been to France or Europe. However, Joan is my middle name. Joan of Arc is my Baptismal saint and I have had a life-long devotion to her as she helps guide me through this exile life. My oldest sister visited Paris in 2017 and I charged her with bringing me back a statue or holy card of St. Joan from her visit. I thought she would be popular as a patron saint of France. My sister was disappointed in her search and locals said that for Joan thing you needed to go to Orleans, which was not on her itinerary. However, upon her visit to Notre Dame she said that St. Joan's altar was directly opposite of the tabernacle. She made a visit to St. Joan and lit a day-long candle on my behalf. She sent me an email immediately, and that whole day was so special as I kept thinking about a candle burning for me at St. Joan's altar in Notre Dame. Its like I was there myself. I hope the restoration doesn't include anything modern!

Family members of January 6 protesters who are or have been incarcerated at the Washington, DC, jail shared disturbing accounts of alleged mistreatment by authorities during Saturday’s “Justice for J6” rally. “Last night for dinner, they were served four pieces of white bread, a cookie, and a packet of tartar sauce,” claimed a woman who went by “Kelly.” Kelly is reportedly the girlfriend of Jonathan Mellis, who was among the protesters who entered the Capitol building on January 6. She claimed Mellis, who has been in jail for months, is being held in solitary confinement. “I think America needs to become very well versed in the treatment of these men.

For the third straight week, college football fans have been heard breaking out in chants of “F*ck Joe Biden” as Biden’s presidency continues to spiral downward in the polls with a wave of crises and scandals such as the crisis on the border, unpopular forced vaccine mandates, a worsening economy, and out of control spending, not to mention the debacle in Afghanistan. Fans unhappy with Biden’s actions plied the chant at the University of Kentucky on Saturday: [video] The chant also rang out in Tennessee and Wyoming: [Videos] Chants broke out a few weeks ago at games, including Coastal Carolina, Virginia Tech, Auburn, Texas A&M, and more.

Denmark has done something sensible – and remarkably, its left-wing politicians have been the ones promoting the measure – by proposing that migrants be required to work 37 hours a week in order to receive welfare benefits. If they refuse, they will be stripped of their benefits and, presumably, will either capitulate and go to work, or leave Denmark, in order to move to another European country that might take them in, or to return to their countries – overwhelmingly Muslim — of origin.

Everyone knows by now that a forthcoming Bob Woodward book alleges that General Mark Milley, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff (CJCS), may have committed sedition during the Trump years. According to Woodward, Milley contacted the top Chinese general and assured him that everything was under control in spite of the eccentric Trump, that he (Milley) wouldn’t let Trump get us into war with China, and that he’d call them (the Chinese) if Trump were planning on that so there wouldn’t “be any surprises.” If true, this is the biggest politico-military bombshell in American history. A minor earthquake shook the City of Angels on Friday night, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. The agency reported a magnitude of 4.3 on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale with an epicenter in Carson, Calif., which is Los Angeles County. The 15-second-long temblor caused a Marathon Petroleum refinery to lose power and resort to dramatic flaring, scaring locals, the Los Angeles Times reported. There are about five quakes per year that rank between 4.0 and 5.0 on the Modified Mercalli Intensity Scale, the paper said. There were no immediate reported of injuries or damage, the Associated Press reported.

Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez donned an elegant gown with the slogan “Tax the Rich” painted on the back at the Met Gala in New York, where guests selected by Vogue’s Anna Wintour ponied up around $35,000 a pop for tickets. My first question is: Who doesn’t want to “tax the rich”? Judging from my social-media feed, there seems to be a growing segment of people under the impression that the wealthy pay little or nothing in taxes. When you ask Americans if they support a wealth tax, a majority support the idea.
