SURFSIDE, Fla. (AP) — The oceanfront condominium building that collapsed near Miami had “major structural damage” to a concrete structural slab below its pool deck that needed to be extensively repaired, according to a 2018 engineering report on the building.
The report was among a series of documents released by the city of Surfside as rescuers continued to dig Saturday through the rubble of the building in an effort to find any of the 159 people who remain unaccounted for after its collapse. At least four people were killed.
While the engineering report from the firm of Morabito Consultants did not warn of imminent danger from the damage —

SURFSIDE, Fla. — No progress has been made in finding any of the 159 people that went missing in the Champion Towers collapse in Surfside, according to officials in Miami-Dade County. Rescue efforts have been hampered as a “very deep” fire has spread through the rubble, forcing crews to put it out to make further ventures into the wreckage. “It’s extremely difficult to locate the source of the fire, so they’ve been working around the clock — these fire rescue teams, these brave men and women under the rubble — to fix this problem,” said Miami-Dade County Mayor Daniella Levine Cava. There are times…at a concert, game, or other public event…when you want to leap to your feet, raise your cupped hands, fill your chest with air, and — with your most expressive voice — make no sound yet feel good inside.
If that’s true for you, you’re gonna love the Olympics.
You’ll relate to the audience, who’ll be doing that very thing.
Japan’s released its COVID guidelines, and this year won’t be a particularly uproarious affair.
As reported by Agence France-Presse, for one, alcohol is banned. So for attendees hoping to booze it up, sobering disappointment awaits.
Another thing: Due to germs, no autographs will be allowed.

Joseph Bolanos doesn’t wear horns, isn’t a crackpot, and isn’t a terrorist. He has been a neighborhood watch leader in New York City’s Upper West Side for 23 years. In 2012, as president of the West 76th Street Block Association, Bolanos put up signs reading “rat xing” to shame the city into cleaning up the garbage. The neighbors loved him. Now the 69 year old is a neighborhood pariah. One neighbor who brought him Thanksgiving dinner recently wrote him a nasty-gram wishing him death. “I hope Antifa gets you,” the note read.
What changed? Bolanos attended the Trump speech on January 6. He did nothing wrong.

New York Times op-ed columnist Thomas Friedman warned in a piece published on Tuesday that “volcanic forces are gathering that could blow the lid off our democracy.”
“We are living in a fool’s paradise. Enjoy it while it lasts,” the liberal columnist said.
What pending calamity was Freidman referring to? Donald Trump being reelected in 2024, which he admitted has him “terrified.” And while he pontificated on fabricated fears, he also touched on a very real concern in the article, “Want to Get Trump Re-elected? Dismantle the Police.”

A white Indiana schoolgirl born in an abusive home, who later lost her biological family and who eventually wound up being raised in a foster home, showed up at her local school board hearing this week to ask district officials why in the world they believe she benefits from so-called “white privilege.”
“I was told that I have white privilege. How can a child born in an abusive drug and alcohol abuse home who lost her entire biological family, that has experienced all forms of abuse, be privileged?” the young girl said to district officials.

I remember what it felt like the first time I had my sense of newly built security ripped from me. I had just turned 19. I was so young. I was just a kid. Like most young people, I never thought that it could happen to me.
At the time I was in the military, living off base in Missouri with a female roommate. After about a week of noticing things were “off” in the house (the back door would be unlocked, then open physically, etc.) I brought it up at work.
Some of my co-workers said I was working too much.

When Joe Biden was sworn in as America’s 46th president, he laid his hand on an ancient Douay-Rheims family Bible, a translation made by Catholics in France, where they’d taken refuge from the Reformation across the Channel. In doing so, the new president reminded some 40 million viewers of a truth he may now prefer to forget: namely, that the Catholic Church is inherently political, and faith in her teachings is never a merely private matter.
For decades, American Catholic politicians insisted the opposite was the case. For generations of Democrats, especially, the faith meant dated jokes about stern nuns and sentimentality about Notre Dame football.

A hacker in Florida reprogrammed a digital highway sign to share COVID-19 conspiracy theories and a plea to can the nation’s top infectious disease expert.
A sign on State Road 836 in Miami read “Arrest Fauci,” “COVID-19 was a hoax” and “vaccines kill,” on Tuesday morning, according to NBC 6 South Florida.
Officials had turned off the messages by mid-morning, according to the outlet.
The prank comes as Dr. Anthony Fauci, who has served as chief medical adviser to the last seven presidents, continues to defend himself against critics who claim his messaging was inconsistent during the pandemic.

Speaker Nancy Pelosi threw cold water on the notion that the House of Representatives would take up the Senate’s bipartisan infrastructure deal Thursday — unless the Senate also passed the Democrats’ reconciliation bill.
Pelosi (D-Calif.) made the comments during her weekly news conference after being asked about the compromise package, which President Biden made a surprise endorsement of on Thursday afternoon.
“Let me be really clear on this,” she began, “We will not take up a bill in the House until the Senate passes the bipartisan bill and a reconciliation bill. If there is no bipartisan bill, then we’ll just go when the Senate passes a reconciliation bill.

The Florida apartment building that partially collapsed on Thursday had been reportedly sinking for decades — and was undergoing a structural inspection, according to officials and a research study.
The 12-story beachfront condo in Miami-Dade County was built in 1981 — and had been sinking into the ground since the 1990s, according to a 2020 study conducted by Shimon Wdowinski, a professor at Florida International University.
“I looked at it this morning and said, ‘Oh my god.’ We did detect that,” Wdowinski told USA Today on Thursday.

A 12-story condo tower partially collapsed early Thursday morning on Collins Avenue in the town of Surfside, spurring a massive search-and-rescue effort with dozens of rescue crews from the county and surrounding cities.
Part of Champlain Towers, an oceanside condo built in 1981 with more than 100 units at 8777 Collins Ave., collapsed around 2 a.m. Miami Beach police confirmed the address of the building on Twitter.
Officials have not yet commented on how many people are hurt, but a firefighter on the scene could be heard saying there are multiple casualties.
