White House press secretary Jen Psaki said Tuesday that US efforts to free Americans detained in Iran are “separate” from negotiations to curb the country’s nuclear program. Psaki said the issues aren’t linked after the US denied an Iran state media report that the US will unfreeze $7 billion in Iranian assets for the release of four Americans. Four Iranians also would be freed. “Our policy as the US government has not changed on ransom. But I will tell you that discussions to bring home Americans who are held in Iran are something that are raised — that is raised at the highest level

White House press secretary Jen Psaki believes President Biden deserves credit for how he has handled the border and blamed Donald Trump for the migrant surge and the overflowing immigration system. 'After four years of an immigration system rooted in destructive and chaotic policies, President Biden is taking the challenge head on and building a fair, orderly and human immigration system,' the White House press secretary said at the top of her briefing. Psaki launched into a list of accomplishments related to the crisis, including Customs and Border Protection (CBP) nearly doubling their rate processing unaccompanied minor migrants and working to reunify families.

New York City schools have canceled the Columbus Day holiday, replacing it with an Indigenous Peoples’ Day, while also making Juneteenth a school holiday and getting rid of snow days altogether. The city Department of Education called Oct. 11 “Indigenous Peoples’ Day” in the 2021-2022 calendar it posted on its website Tuesday, flagging the beginning and end dates for the school year as well as winter and spring recesses but not the big changes within in a tweet. The move, which was announced, however, in a press release to education beat reporters, officially cancels for school kid recognition what remains a federal, state and city holiday

CNN anchor Jake Tapper wondered aloud Tuesday why he should bother continuing to give air time to Republican lawmakers responsible for peddling falsehoods about former President Trump’s election loss. Appearing on CNN’s “New Day” morning program, Mr. Tapper pondered the purpose of him giving Republicans a platform to push lies about matters including the results of the 2020 presidential race. “The lie about the election on its own is anti-democracy, and it is sowing seeds of ignorance in the populace, and obviously it has the potential to incite violence,” Mr. Tapper said. “But beyond that is, if you’re willing to lie about that,

Seattle—Neighbors living next to Albert Davis Park in Seattle's Lake City are begging city leaders to do something about a growing homeless camp at the park. The neighbors say they are living in constant fear and apprehension after a recent double shooting and explosion at the camp. "I don't think I've slept more than a couple hours, any night this this week," says Shannon Ellis-Brock, who lives near Albert Davis Park. She says drugs and crime are rampant at the camp, which took over the park when the pandemic hit over a year ago. She and others say the problems there are out of control

President Joe Biden announced Monday that he is revising the cap on the total number of refugees who may be allowed into the country this year up to 62,500–after sustaining blowback from his party's left after appearing to stand pat at a much lower number. The administration had previously announced an effort to raise the cap up from 15,000 after getting blasted by critics including Democratic 'squad' members Rep. Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York and Ilhan Omar of Minnesota. The series of U-turns came to a head in April, when the administration had indicated it would move to raise the cap–days after
